Book excerpt: In 'Fast Facts: Early Hearing' Detection and Intervention an international team of contributors brings together the evidence that supports the effectiveness of universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) and early hearing detection and intervention services (EHDI). As well as considering elements essential to successful UNHS/EHDI programs, including screening technologies, resources, data management and family-centered early intervention services, the team discusses the resources needed to deliver such programs as well as the performance of screening programs globally. The aim is to provide a comprehensive compendium of information to make the case for greater recognition of the importance of UNHS/EHDI and so improve the life chances of children who are diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing. Table of Contents: • Newborn hearing screening and EHDI • Rationale for UNHS/EHDI programs • Prevalence of newborn hearing loss and performance of screening programs • Global status of newborn and infant hearing screening • Genetic and CMV testing • Medical evaluation and management of permanent childhood hearing loss • Middle ear effusion and other barriers to timely diagnosis • Data management systems for newborn hearing screening programs • Establishing UNHS/EHDI programs • Pediatric diagnostic audiology • Amplification device fitting • Family-centered early intervention • Unilateral hearing loss and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder

Book excerpt: In 2001, legislation was enacted to require hearing screenings for all newborns prior to discharge from any South Carolina hospital averaging 100 deliveries or more per year. Established under this mandate, First Sound is South Carolina's early hearing detection and intervention program. Since the initiation of the program, 1,071 infants have been identified with confirmed hearing loss and have received intervention. Eight South Carolina hospitals have been selected to participate in a quality improvement program to improve infant hearing screening practices and reduce rates of infants not rescreened.

Book excerpt: Over the years, considerable research has been done showing the advantages of early identification of hearing loss and its impact on children in developing speech and language skills. Although the universal early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) program is fully functional in developed countries it has not been actualized in developing global regions like Asia, Africa and Latin America. The primary reason could be precise government policies and the necessary funds to support them. There is also a lack of awareness and initiative form the parent's side. The purpose of this paper is to describe and support the need for a universal early detection of hearing loss and intervention program in India. Objectives for developing a universal early identification and intervention program and the recommendations for actualizing them have been included.

Book excerpt: Remarkable progress in the development of new concepts and techniques used in reconstructive surgery of microtia/atresia of the external auditory canal (EAC) has been made since the beginning of the 21st century. Helical computed tomography has made a three-dimensional reconstruction of the soft tissue of the temporal bone surface and the cranium possible, and has laid the groundwork for a collaboration between plastic surgeons and otologists. This book presents the latest findings on reconstructive surgery performed jointly by plastic surgeons and otologists. Based on this concept, information on diagnosis, surgical procedures, outcomes, long-term results and psychology is discussed. Collaborative surgery offers advantages not only in terms of a better reconstruction of morphology and function, but also in terms of the lower number of surgical procedures required which reduces the psychological pressure and economic burden on patients.

Book excerpt: This second edition of Developing Listening and Talking, Birth to Six remains a dynamic compilation of crucially important information for the facilitation of auditorally-based spoken language for today's infants and young children with hearing loss. This text is intended for graduate level training programs for professionals who work with children who have hearing loss and their families (teachers, therapists, speech-language pathologists, and audiologists.) In addition, the book will be of great interest to undergraduate speech-language-hearing programs, early childhood education and intervention programs, and parents of children who have hearing loss. Responding to the crucial need for a comprehensive text, this book provides a framework for the skills and knowledge necessary to help parents promote listening and spoken language development. This second edition covers current and up-to-date information about hearing, listening, auditory technology, auditory development, spoken language development, and intervention for young children with hearing loss whose parents have chosen to have them learn to listen and talk. Additions include updated information about hearing instruments and cochlear implants and about ways that professionals can support parents in promoting their children's language and listening development. Information about preschool program selection and management has been included. This book is unique in its scholarly, yet thoroughly readable style. Numerous illustrations, charts, and graphs illuminate key ideas. This second edition should be the foundation of the personal and professional libraries of students, clinicians, and parents who are interested in listening and spoken language outcomes for children with hearing loss.
