Book excerpt: As the title suggests, this book tells of the experiences of a minister and his wife during a time of whooping cough epidemic in 19th century Scotland. In a period of about six weeks time, four of the couple's seven children died of the disease. In the hope that what they went through might help others also dealing with death and grief, Rev. Beith, wrote this narrative. In addition to chronicling the events of this time of trial, he shares scriptures and insights that helped them in those dark days. In the words of the author, "Though it be seldom that such an accumulation of distress is inflicted on families, few are, at all times, exempted from sorrows similar in kind however they may differ in degree. Such seasons have been kept in view in preparing the Narrative. It may fall into the hands of those who are in trouble as we were, and may prove to them like the voice which Bunyan's Pilgrim heard before him in the valley of the shadow of death. It may speak encouragement and comfort to some such mourner, by testifying that he is not the only traveller in that dark region, and that no strange thing has happened to him in his affliction. Nay, it may produce a blessed hope that the cloud will pass; and a no less grateful assurance that, even whilst it continues, though dark and lowering to those who behold it from without, it is luminous, by the presence of the Lord, within. " Epidemics such as that which visited the Beith family have, for the most part been conquered, but death still stalks, and none are immune from tragedies. It is hoped that this book will prove helpful even to this modern age. This would be an excellent book for the pastor, who must deal with things of this nature. While it is, of course, a sad book, it is also uplifting and comforting.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage
