Book excerpt: "The document described herein is a guidance manual developed to provide information for the selection and use of sorbents for cleanup or control of liquid hazardous substances. Literature reviews, sorbent manufacturer data and experiences of Federal On-Scene Coordinators were reviewed in conjunction with laboratory studies to determine the compatibility and sorption capacity of selected representative hazardous liquid-sorbent pairs. The combined experimental and literature data were used to prepare the manual. On-scene coordinators and their technical support personnel are the primary target audience for the manual. Before utilizing the manual, the user must first identify the spilled liquid. If it is one of the 212 liquid hazardous substances addressed in the manual, a reference is provided to one of 26 ' 'Sorbent Selection and Use Guides." Each of the guides enables the user to rapidly identify the generic sorbent classes, physical forms, and methods for application and collection that are most suitable for each of three different chemical release-control scenarios: (1) a spill onto land; (2) a floating release into water; and (3) immobilization for landfilling. The manual contains ' 'Sorbent Data Sheets" for 13 generic classes of sorbents other than activated carbon. These data sheets contain information on manufacturers, acquisition costs, bulk density and sorbent limitations. The sorption capacity of 190 sorbent-chemical pairs was determined and recorded in the manual. The manual also includes cost estimation procedures, test methods, hazardous liquid physical properties, and a description of the rationale for the relase-control scenarios."

Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was introduced on December 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The agency is charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health.

Biological Technology2. Chemical Technology3. Containment and Barrier Technology4. Immobilization Technology5. Membrane Technology6. Physical Technology7. Radiation and Electrical Technology8. Thermal Destruction TechnologyTraditional technologies have been included, as well as those that can be considered innovative and emerging. The traditional approaches have been the most successful, as contractors are careful about bidding on some of the newer technologies. However, as regulatory requirements increase, markets will open for the innovative and emerging processes. There will be increasing pressure to break down complex waste streams, with each subsequent stream demanding separate treatment. In addition, a number of technologies have been developed by combining processes directly, or in a treatment train, and these developments are expected to assume increasing importance. However, such concerns as uncertainties due to liability, regulatory approval, price competition, and client approval have limited the application of some of these newer technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management of hazardous chemicals and materials-particularly during emergency release situations-is a critical part of routine training required for workers and professionals in the chemical, petroleum and manufacturing industries. Proper storage of highly reactive chemical agents, correct choice of protective clothing and safety issues in confined spaces are vital to operating facilities. Inattention to these and other issues covered in this book can result in a loss of life, dispersal of toxic chemical agents into the environment, or fire and explosion and subsequent legal liabilities. Emergency Response and Hazardous Chemical Management: Principles and Practices provides a concise reference for management and workers on the important issues regarding the use and management of hazardous chemicals as well as the critical issues in the emergency response management of uncontrolled releases of hazardous agents. This book combines practical information on hazardous chemical response and environmental management with scientific and management issues important in the development of sound chemical management planning. Important current topics such as hazardous chemical management in confined spaces are also covered in detail.
