Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sonnets of the Sacred Year Owrite in it was to remove as far as possible from the ordinary metrical forms. Again, if what Henry Reed, the author Of those Lectures on the British Poets Which have been SO widely read in England and America, has said is true, that the public taste for the Sonnet is reviving, it seemed well worth while to make any effort, however humble, to minister to this appreciation Of one Of the noblest forms Of all noble verse, and also to help to give it a tone in harmony with the everlasting chime. And, once more, the writer, far from feeling that he is driven by the necessity Of being original to the use Of a metre which is not the best vehicle for thought on sacred subjects, was strongly convinced that there was no measure better adapted for his purpose than this, and that the general testimony Of English literature at its best serves to show that in our language at least the Sonnet is especially fitted for subjects that are grave, dignified, and contemplative. It is scarcely likely that this fact will be clear and this Opinion acceptable to every reader, and therefore it has been thought advisable to introduce the series with some remarks on the origin, history, and character Of this species Of verse, with particular reference to the distinctive position which it holds in English literature. They have been found, by the many tests of comparative popularity, to be those which are most wanted - most looked for in a sepa rate volume. Two or three of the Sacred Poems which follow have never before been included in a volume. Written in mature years, they must stand simply on their merits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sacred Songs, Sonnets, and Miscellaneous Poems We are no longer satisfied with the novel, with the song, or with the play, that used to delight our forefathers. Nothing so Simple and innocent would now content us. Even our religion has suffered a change. The stern mo rality and unbending creeds of other days have become pliant and yielding, while compromise and emasculated beliefs have taken their place. The Old doctrines familiar to the bye - gone pul pit now offend us, though we are not particular if the preacher resorts to irreverence and slang On the contrary, we rather encourage him in this propensity. The favors of God that have dropped noiselessly on us, like the dew on Hermon, or rushed forcefully like the torrent in the South the dis regard, too often, of these graces; the hardening of the heart against the goodness; the rejection of the mercy; the calling down of the vengeance; the long estrangement from virtue and God; but His still longer arm that touched us and held us; and His endless love that ultimately won us back; the walls of doctrine that He builded round us; the cisterns of grace, plentiful as water, that He digged for us; the continued falling off from Him, alas! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unseen Realities: Sacred Poems It is a privilege to be asked to write a word of introduction and appreciation to this small volume. The poems it contains are veritable heart-throbs. Each of them has its birth in a direct message from God to the soul of the gifted writer, to whom the Christian Church is already greatly indebted for her songs of the Kingdom. In these, which she now sends forth, deep answers unto deep, as is ever the case when God and the soul are in communion; and many will doubtless find their own experiences interpreted here in lines of haunting sweetness and abiding strength. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sonnets and Other Short Poems, Chiefly on Sacred Subjects This little volume of Poems cannot lay claim to the merit of having been written with any uniformity of design. They are, with a few exceptions, a casual register of religious impres sions and feelings-of a frame of mind, sometimes my own, sometimes that of others with whom I have sympathized. As a whole, they are tinged, perhaps, with a sadder colouring of thought than accords with the condition of Christians in general; but if, on this very account, they find readier access to the heart of the conscience-stricken sinner or the drooping mourner, they will accomplish the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sabbath Haltings in Life's Wilderness: Or, Sacred Poems for Every Sunday in the Year If I have occafionally fallen into the fame train of thought, which, of courfe, I have pru dently avoided as much as pofiible, it may be accounted for, not only by a certain fimilarity of the general plan, but by the circumf'cances that for many years the poem for the day in the Chrif'tian Year has formed a portion of my appointed reading. Such coincidences, however, are extremely rare; for it is one of the charac terif'tics of the great fource from which we have both drawn, that its precious truths prefent new and ever-varying beauties, according to the afpeet in which they are viewed.
