Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain, long revered for its choral music and partsongs, had largely neglected art songs since the Elizabethan era. The middle of the nineteenth century witnessed efforts to revive the genre, particularly in the works of Sir C. Hubert Parry and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. The following generation, including the Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn (1868–1916), built on the foundations laid by Parry and Stanford and served as the bridge to the vocal music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Edward Elgar, Ivor Gurney, John Ireland, and ultimately Benjamin Britten. Though best known for his Scottish-influenced compositions, MacCunn composed over 100 songs that, free from national constraints, are some of the most refined and sophisticated examples of his music. Almost no modern editions of MacCunn’s song exist, though many were published during the composer’s lifetime. The current two-part edition presents the composer’s 102 extant songs. Part 1 contains 53 individual songs; Part 2 presents the songs that were first published as small collections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Edition, with a new chapter on ministering to and within mixed-faith marriages and families. With the advancement of the internet, changing worldviews, and the rising generation of millennials, Latter-day Saints today face unique challenges to faith on an unprecedented scale. Unlike most books written to help those struggling with their testimonies, Bridges: Ministering to Those Who Question is geared at helping local leaders and family members better understand the sources of these challenges and how to minister to those affected by them. This ministering is done through building bridges of love, empathy, and trust regardless of whether or not someone retains their belief or continues to participate. Author David B. Ostler, a former mission president, utilizes surveys with local leaders and disaffected members, research from social science and religious studies, and teachings from Church leaders to show how Latter-day Saints can work to better support those who have questions and create church environments where all can feel welcome.

Book excerpt: In the Hmong tradition, the song poet recounts the story of his people, their history and tragedies, joys and losses; extemporizing or drawing on folk tales, he keeps the past alive, invokes the spirits and the homeland, and records courtships, births, weddings, and wishes. Kao Kalia Yang retells the life of her father Bee Yang, the song poet, a Hmong refugee in Minnesota, driven from the mountains of Laos by America's Secret War. Bee lost his father as a young boy and keenly felt his orphanhood. He would wander from one neighbor to the next, collecting the things they said to each other, whispering the words to himself at night until, one day, a song was born. Bee sings the life of his people through the war-torn jungle and a Thai refugee camp. But the songs fall away in the cold, bitter world of a Minneapolis housing project and on the factory floor until, with the death of Bee's mother, the songs leave him for good. But before they do, Bee, with his poetry, has polished a life of poverty for his children, burnished their grim reality so that they might shine. The Song Poet is a love story -- of a daughter for her father, a father for his children, a people for their land, their traditions, and all that they have lost.

Book excerpt: What impoverished young knight would duck a chance to win fame along with beautiful lady bringing rich lands with her hand in marriage? Prince George, that’s who. Stung by previous failures, he’d rather stay home in comfort, but finds himself struggling through forests, crossing deserts, and sailing seas to capture the Unicorn, find a fabled flower, and discover an “Unsung Song.” Accompanied by a headsman, a Seeker, and a wild boy, Prince George battles beasts, Northmen, and bandit armies, not to mention witches, Gypsies, and a diabolical dragon-rider. Will the Prince win Dorinda of Darr? And what of his childhood playmate, Princess Julianna? Does she have plans for him too? Possibly. More of the Prince’s tale is continued in The Black Unicorn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This moving collection of prose poems about seventies soul singer Donny Hathaway presents a complex view of a gifted artist through imagined conversations and interviews that convey the voices, surroundings, and clashing dimensions of Hathaway's life. Among mainstream audiences Hathaway is perhaps best known either as the syrupy voice singing with Roberta Flack in "Where Is the Love" or for his shocking death--he was found dead beneath the open thirteenth-story window of his New York hotel room in 1979 at the age of thirty-three. Less well known are the depth of his classical and gospel training, his wide-ranging intellectual interests, and the respect his musical knowledge, talent, and versatility commanded from collaborators like Curtis Mayfield and Aretha Franklin. Meanwhile, among listeners with special affinity for soul music of the 1970s, even almost thirty years after his death, no voice burns with the intensity of Hathaway's own in the great solo ballads and freedom songs such as "A Song for You," "Giving Up," "Someday We'll All Be Free," and "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black." Winners Have Yet to Be Announced pushes poetry toward the rich characterization and depth of a novel. Yet it is the capacity of poetic language that allows the book to examine Donny Hathaway's vivid and remarkable life without attempting to resolve the mysteries within which he lived and created and sang.

Book excerpt: For years, emotions?both good and bad?have been pouring out of me, releasing themselves onto scrap papers, notebooks, napkins and computer screens taking shape as melody-less songs. Call them poems, call them lyrics, call them what you will; the thoughts once formed and molded into rhythms and rhymes just could not be lost forever or kept to clutter in my mind. These bits of my heart were originally written for no one?s eyes but my own, but this book?which in effect, I have been writing for more than ten years?changes that. Love them, hate them, maybe feel inspired? If nothing else with each song you?ve gained a tiny window into a stranger?s mind on some particular day, feeling some particular way, worrying about some particular thing, and perhaps you will find that we are not such strangers after all. This collection of unsung song lyrics is for those looking for answers, those looking for questions, the young at heart, the old souls, curious minds and inspired musicians. I invite you all into my heart and into this record of my life for the last decade.
