They represent the thought of a few precious leisure moments over a period of two years. The poems have appeared at various times in the Jewish daily and periodical press including the American Hebrew, the Jewish Daily News, the Jewish Forum, the Jewish Exponent, the Young Judean and the American Israelite. I am further prompted to collate these verses by reason of the recent dearth of poems relating to the life of the American Jew. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of Zion by Hebrew Singers of Mediaeval Times The originals of the following poems are, with one or two exceptions, to be found in the Sabbath and festival prayer-books in use in the synagogues of English and foreign Jewish communities. By far the larger number come to us from mediaeval Spain, where Hebrew poetry reached the highest point of devotional and poetical excellence. There the Jewish hymnologists were alike poets and philosophers, and the stream of learning and cultivation, mingling with that of poetry, flowed through the plains of religious life and enriched them in a thousand ways, while the fruit of the tree of knowledge was used both to enlighten and strengthen religious faith, and to adorn and beautify divine service. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union Hymnal: Songs and Prayers for Jewish Worship In 1914, the first revision of the Union Hymnal was published by the Central Conference of American Rabbis. It contained two hundred and twenty-six hymns as compared with one hundred and twenty-nine in the original edition. Three years later, there was a very widespread demand for another revision. Studieswere made by several committees from that time until 1924, when the present Committee on Revision was appointed. The work was brought to completion with the presentation of the manuscript to the Conference in Providence, R. I., In 1930. The Committee sought to meet the requirements of our congregations and religious schools by providing a revision which should ring true to the Jewish spirit. AS against two hundred and twenty-six hymns in the second edition, the present compilation has two hundred and sixty-six hymns, many of which are entirely new. Considerable use was made of the second edition, many favorite hymns were retained, but many were eliminated, because they did not answer the special needs of our congregations and religious schools; others were re-harmonized or separated, or the language of the poetry revised so as to give more appropriate expression to the demands of Jewish theology. Jewish composers contributed melodies and settings that were inspired by traditional Jewish music. Many Jewish poems were introduced into our hymnology for the first time. The Com mittee on Revision was actuated by a desire to produce a hymn book which would stimulate congregational singing, inspire Jewish devotion, revive the value of Jewish melody, make use of neglected Jewish poetry, lean heavily where possible upon Jewish motifs, awaken in the children of our religious schools a love for Jewish poetry and song, and encourage in the religious schools an earnest study of Jewish music, and finally contribute to the field of hymnology a publication which would be essentially Jewish in color, spirit and purpose. One of the main purposes kept constantly in view was to make it as Jewish as possible, and thus meet one of the needs of our modern synagogal life, namely the adaptation of Jewish traditional music to the usage and taste of our own days. This involves a two-fold question: what elements of synagogal melody best ex press our religious life in music employed by our congregations; and how shall we clothe them in harmony that shall reveal their own peculiar modal character and melodic contours? We would. Not assert that we have solved these two problems. Not only in this Hymnal, but in our religious-musical life in general, they are still far from a solution. But we have made an earnest efiort to proceed in this direction. We have called upon Jewish composers for aid. AS noted elsewhere in this Preface, a considerable number of them contributed compositions to this collection. Composers were urged to utilize some of the wealth of synagogal melody. This plea found a ready response. Even a superficial glance through the contents of this volume indicates how many of the hymns are based upon traditional melodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns and Anthems for Jewish Worship The editor has deemed it his duty to cast into English form the noble, soulful and genuinely Jewish hymns of the late Dr. Adolph Huebsch, the ever-remembered Rabbi and guide of the above mentioned congrega tion. He is aware of the inadequacy of his English renditions to the beauty and ease of the original German. Until a new generation of poets will arise in this land who will sing the message of Judaism in their native tongue, let us be satisfied with translations from the German and the Hebrew liturgy. The editor expresses his lasting thanks to Mrs. Marion Froelich, without whose aid he could never have accomplished this difficult task. Book excerpt: Scattered throughout many kabbalistic and hasidic texts are numerous teaching stories with reincarnation as their central theme. Now, for the first time, you can read 70 of these fascinating tales in a single volume, collected and retold by master storyteller, Yonassan Gershom. The author begins with an over-view of basic themes about the afterlife, such as the judgement of souls before the Heavenly Court, the mystical significance of the Covenant at Sinai, the process of tikkun olam (repairing the universe), and some reasons why human beings return to earth in new bodies. He then takes you on an exciting journey through many centuries of Jewish tales, where you will meet dozens of saints and sinners, animals and humans, angels and mortals-all attempting to work out their past-life karma through applying the teachings of the Torah in earthly life. In order to make the classical stories understandable to the modern reader, each tale has been ex-panded to include clear explanations of cultural and religious details. So skillfully does Gershom weave this material into the narrative itself, that the reader scarcely notices how a gentle form of education is taking place. By the time you have finished the book, you will not only have been entertained, but will have completed an excellent introduction to Jewish spirituality as well. Both classical and contemporary tales are included here, from sources as widely varied as kabbalistic texts, folklore anthologies, and discussions on the Internet. Of special interest are several new tales collected by the author himself, which have never before appeared in print.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Hymnal for School and Home The purpose of the Hebrew Hymnal is to present traditional melodies of the synagogue and the Jewish home adapted to the needs of young Israel. Most of the music has been specially arranged for the Hymnal, and some of the selections are here published for the first time. In every case, the editors have endeavored to give a simple version of the melody with correct harmonization. The transliteration of the Hebrew words aecom panying the music is a slight modification of the system followed in the Jewish Encyclopedia. The Hebrew text (based on S. Baer's Abodath Israel) as well as the English translation, which follows the authorized Singer Prayer Book, are printed on the page Opposite the music, except where space permitted the printing of the words on the same page with the music. This arrangement makes it possible to use the book as a Hebrew reader in the schools. Inasmuch, however, as the mison d' fire of the book is the music. It was, of course, necessary to page it trom left to right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
