Book Synopsis For the Sake of the Song by : Ann Norton Holbrook
Download or read book For the Sake of the Song written by Ann Norton Holbrook and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After death, Townes Van Zandt found the success that he sabotaged during life. Diagnosed as bipolar, an alcoholic, and perennially unreliable, Van Zandt died of heart failure at the age of 52 on New Year’s Day 1997. He released sixteen albums during life, and since his death numerous albums both by and in honor of him have been released and many critical articles published, in addition to several books (including Robert Hardy’s A Deeper Blue by UNT Press). Van Zandt, once an underappreciated and self-destructive wandering troubadour, is now a critics’ and fan-favorite. His best-known songs are “Pancho and Lefty,” covered by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, and “If I Needed You.” Steve Earle’s 2009 Townes album of covers jumpstarted a slate of more recent tributes, including those by Robert Earl Keen, Lucinda Williams, and John Prine. For the Sake of the Song collects ten essays on Townes Van Zandt from a variety of approaches. For example, contributors examine his legacy; his use of the minor key; psychological interpretation of “High, Low and In Between”; his reception in the Austin music scene; and an exploration of his relationship with Richard Dobson, a so-called “outlaw songwriter” with whom he toured as part of the Hemmer Ridge Mountain Boys. An introduction by editors Ann Norton Holbrook and Dan Beller-McKenna provides an overview of Van Zandt’s literary excellence and philosophical wisdom, rare among even the best songwriters.
Book Synopsis The Life of Saul Bellow, Volume 1 by : Zachary Leader
Download or read book The Life of Saul Bellow, Volume 1 written by Zachary Leader and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of his adult life, Saul Bellow was the most acclaimed novelist in America, the winner of, among other awards, the Nobel Prize in Literature, three National Book Awards, and the Pulitzer Prize. The Life of Saul Bellow, by the literary scholar and biographer Zachary Leader, marks the centenary of Bellow’s birth as well as the tenth anniversary of his death. It draws on unprecedented access to Bellow’s papers, including much previously restricted material, as well as interviews with more than 150 of the novelist’s relatives, close friends, colleagues, and lovers, a number of whom have never spoken to researchers before. Through detailed exploration of Bellow’s writings, and the private history that informed them, Leader chronicles a singular life in letters, offering original and nuanced accounts not only of the novelist’s development and rise to eminence, but of his many identities—as writer, polemicist, husband, father, Chicagoan, Jew, American. The biography will be published in two volumes. The first volume, To Fame and Fortune: 1915–1964, traces Bellow’s Russian roots; his birth and early childhood in Quebec; his years in Chicago; his travels in Mexico, Europe, and Israel; the first three of his five marriages; and the novels from Dangling Man and The Adventures of Augie March to the best-selling Herzog. New light is shed on Bellow’s fellow writers, including Ralph Ellison, John Berryman, Lionel Trilling, and Philip Roth, and on his turbulent and influential life away from the desk, which was as full of incident as his fiction. Bellow emerges as a compelling character, and Leader’s powerful accounts of his writings, published and unpublished, forward the case for his being, as the critic James Wood puts it, “the greatest of American prose stylists in the twentieth century.”

Have you ever heard a Beatles interview and asked: • When was that taped? • Where’s the best place to find the complete recording? Way Beyond Compare has the answers to these and thousands of similar questions. It’s the key to unlocking the secrets behind every known Beatles recording in circulation through 1965, telling you where to find them, what makes them unique, and how they fit within the context of the Beatles’ amazing musical and cultural journey. Author John C. Winn has spent twenty years (twice as long as the Beatles were together!) sifting through, scrutinizing, organizing, and analyzing hundreds of hours of audio and video recordings—and putting them into a digestible chronological framework for Way Beyond Compare and its companion volume, That Magic Feeling: The Beatles’ Recorded Legacy, Volume Two, 1966–1970. “It takes a rare and special kind of mind to sift through it all, to research and enquire, catalogue and chronicle, assess and contrast, identify and label, and to fit all the myriad pieces into the vast jigsaw puzzle that is the Beatles’ career. John C. Winn is that person, and he’s done it with a rare skill and intelligence.” —Mark Lewisohn

Book excerpt: Three authoritative yet accessible reference books explaining the terms, concepts, histories, and significant personalities of occult systems and practices. Dictionary of Satanism is a concise yet wide-ranging reference guide for the casual reader. It features essential information on the important concepts, issues, people, places, and events associated with Satanism. Also covered are the myriad forms and names that satanic worship has taken from ancient times to the present. Following its original publication in 1818, Collin de Plancy’s Dictionary of Witchcraft became a landmark study of demonology and the occult. A significant influence on the Romantic literary movement and notably consulted by author Victor Hugo, de Plancy’s work remains an essential reference text for any student of the dark arts. Dictionary of Pagan Religions offers a wide-ranging survey of the many religious cults that have flourished around the world from the Stone Age to the present. From Egyptian to Celtic traditions and Gnosticism to Cabala, coauthors Harry E. Wedeck and Wade Baskin have compiled information about the rites, rituals, and influences of these religious systems.
