Book excerpt: As a young composer in the years preceding World War I, Maurice Ravel brought to the art of the song that distinctive fusion of classicism and the modern spirt that characterized all his musical works and helped earn him a reputation as one of the most important modern French song composers. This superb collection includes many of his most admired and performed songs and song cycles, edited and introduced by Arbie Orenstein, the world's leading Ravel scholar, and eloquently displays the artistry that has made Ravel a favorite of 20th-century singers and their audiences. Many of the songs are settings of texts by such major poets as Paul Verlaine and Stephane Mallarme. Reprinted here from authoritative French editions and provided with new English translations of the original French texts, they include: Sainte; Epigrammes de Clement Marot; Manteau de fleurs; Sheherazade; Cinq Melodies populaires grecques; Noel des jouets; Histories naturelles; Vocalise-Etude en forme de Hababera; Les Grands Vents venus d'outremer; Sur l'herbe; Chants popularizes; Trois Poemes de Stephane Mallarme; and Deux Melodies hebra gues."

Book Synopsis Music and Institutions in Nineteenth-Century Britain by : Paul Rodmell
Download or read book Music and Institutions in Nineteenth-Century Britain written by Paul Rodmell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century British society music and musicians were organized as they had never been before. This organization was manifested, in part, by the introduction of music into powerful institutions, both out of belief in music's inherently beneficial properties, and also to promote music occupations and professions in society at large. This book provides a representative and varied sample of the interactions between music and organizations in various locations in the nineteenth-century British Empire, exploring not only how and why music was institutionalized, but also how and why institutions became 'musicalized'. Individual essays explore amateur societies that promoted music-making; institutions that played host to music-making groups, both amateur and professional; music in diverse educational institutions; and the relationships between music and what might be referred to as the 'institutions of state'. Through all of the essays runs the theme of the various ways in which institutions of varying formality and rigidity interacted with music and musicians, and the mutual benefit and exploitation that resulted from that interaction.

Book Synopsis Redefining Hungarian Music from Liszt to Bartók by : Lynn M. Hooker
Download or read book Redefining Hungarian Music from Liszt to Bartók written by Lynn M. Hooker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most popular works of nineteenth-century music were labeled either "Hungarian" or "Gypsy" in style, including many of the best-known and least-respected of Liszt's compositions. In the early twentieth century, Béla Bartók and his colleagues questioned not only the Hungarianness but also the good taste of that style. Bartók argued that it should be discarded in favor of a national style based in the "genuine" folk music of the rural peasantry. Between the heyday of the nineteenth-century Hungarian-Gypsy style and its replacement by a new paradigm of "authentic" national style was a vigorous decades-long debate-one little known inside or outside Hungary-over what it meant to be Hungarian, European, and modern. Redefining Hungarian Music from Liszt to Bartók traces the historical process that defined the conventions of Hungarian-Gypsy style. Author Lynn M. Hooker frames her study around the 1911 celebration of Liszt's centennial. In so doing, she analyzes Liszt's problematic role as a Hungarian-born composer and leader of Hungarian art music who spent most of his life outside of Hungary and questioned whether Hungary's national music was more the creation of Hungarians or Roma (Gypsies). The themes of race and nation that emerge in the discussion of Liszt are further developed in an analysis of discourse on Hungarian national music throughout the Hungarian press in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Showing how the "discovery" of "genuine" folk music by Bartók and Kodály, often depicted as a purely "scientific" matter, responds directly to concerns raised by earlier writers about the "problem of Hungarian music," Hooker argues that the innovations of Bartók and Kodály and their circle are not so much in correcting a flawed concept of the national as in using the idea of national authenticity to open up freedom for composers to explore more stylistic options, including the exploration of modernist musical language. Meticulously researched and elegantly written, Redefining Hungarian Music from Liszt to Bartók is essential reading for musicologists, musicians, and concertgoers alike.

Book Synopsis The Middle English Lyric and Short Poem by : Rosemary Greentree
Download or read book The Middle English Lyric and Short Poem written by Rosemary Greentree and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2001 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Bibliography assembles annotation of collections and criticism of lyrics of religious and secular love, carols and songs, and rhymes of everyday life. The Middle English lyrics and short poems form a varied group that ranges over most aspects of life to include lyrics of religious and secular love, carols and songs, and mundane rhymes of everyday life. Thus there are expressionsof devotion, ethereal or earthly, theological expositions, and knowledge needed for life. The poems are disparate and generally anonymous, and their survival owes much to chance. The bibliography assembles neutral annotation of collections and criticism of the works, arranged chronologically to show the course of criticism and the growing appreciation of these poems and all they can tell us. The introduction considers these matters, problems of definitionof the genre, and the isolable lyrics, and seeks to reconcile some first impressions of the poems, as disparate and slight, with the rewards of close study. ROSEMARY GREENTREE is currently Visiting Research Fellow, Dept of English, University of Adelaide.

Book excerpt: America’s Songs II: Songs from the 1890's to the Post-War Years continues to tell the stories behind popular songs in our country’s history, serving as a sequel to the bestselling America’s Songs: Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley. Beginning in 1890 and ending in post-war America, America's Songs II is a testament to the richness of popular music in the first half of the 20th century. This volume builds on the unique features of the first volume, delving deeper into the nature of the collaboration between well-known songwriters of the time but also shedding light on some of the early performers to turn songs into hits. The book’s structure – a collection of short easy-to-read essays – allows the author to provide historical context to certain songs, but also to demonstrate how individual songs facilitated the popularity of specific genres, including ragtime, jazz, and blues, which subsequently reshaped the landscape of American popular music. America’s Songs II: Songs from the 1890's to the Post-War Years will appeal to American popular music enthusiasts but will also serve as an ideal reference guide for students or as a supplement in American music courses.
Book Synopsis Chaplin's "Limelight" and the Music Hall Tradition by : Frank Scheide
Download or read book Chaplin's "Limelight" and the Music Hall Tradition written by Frank Scheide and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-10-12 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Spencer Chaplin was a stage performer before he was a filmmaker, and it was in English music hall that he learned the rudiments of his art. The last film he made in the United States, Limelight, was a tribute to the music hall days of his youth. As a parallel to Chaplin's past, the film was set in 1914, the year he left the stage for a Hollywood career. This collection of essays examines Limelight and the history of English music hall. Featuring contributions from the world's top Chaplin and music hall historians, as well as previously unpublished interviews with collaborators who worked on Limelight, the book offers new insight into one of Chaplin's most important pictures and the British form of entertainment that inspired it. Essays consider how and why Chaplin made Limelight, other artists who came out of English music hall, and the film's international appeal, among other topics. The book is filled with rare photographs, many published for the first time, sourced from the Chaplin archives and the private collections of other performers and co-stars.
