Book Synopsis Somerset Then & Now by : Nick Chipchase
Download or read book Somerset Then & Now written by Nick Chipchase and published by Pitkin. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landscape of Somerset has changed in many ways over the last century. From Glastonbury to the Quantax, Somerset Then & Now provides a fascinating snapshot of the county in days gone by. The older photographs in this book were taken by local photographer Henry Montague Cooper between 1904 and 1906. Cooper owned one of the county’s first motorcars, and used it to tour extensively with his camera. His photographic record of Somerset surpasses that of every other local photographer. Comparing his Somerset to the modern county of today reveals many changes: the mechanisation of farming has resulted in the loss of hedgerows, and flail cutting in the loss of trees in hedges bordering roads. Somerset’s traditional industries have now gone, and many ways of life with them. However, much still remains unaltered in the heart of this sleepy rural county, and this book celebrates the unchanging beauty of ‘the land of summer’.
Download or read book The Landscape written by Don McCullin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a career spanning sixty years, Sir Don McCullin, once a witness to conflict across the globe, has become one of the greatest landscape photographers of our time.0His pastoral view is far from idyllic. Though the woods and stream close to his house in Somerset have offered some respite, he has not sought out the quiet corners of rural England.0He is drawn, instead, to the drama of approaching storms. He has an acute sense of how the emptiness of his immediate landscape echoes a wider tone of disquiet.0This is a beautifully produced photographic book containing sublime views of England shrouded in mist, snow, water or cowering beneath an overwhelming sky.0And although the majority of the images featured are from Great Britain, it also includes stunning scenes from Syria, Iraq, France, Morocco, Sudan, India and Indonesia.

Edward Thomas 1878-1917 turned from writing prose to poetry in 1914. His work as a poet has been widely celebrated and admired - Ted Hughes described Thomas as "the father of us all". Download or read book Somerset County written by Jason Rhodes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The southernmost county in Maryland, Somerset was established in 1666 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, and named in honor of his wife's sister, Lady Mary Somerset. The county originally included the area of what today is the adjacent counties of Worcester and Wicomico as well as a portion of southern Delaware. Throughout the years, some of its most prominent citizens, including Declaration of Independence signer Samuel Chase and Civil War-era Union supporters John Crisfield and Anna Ella Carroll, helped shape the nation. Somerset County includes photographs--some never before seen--that take readers from the expansion of the railroad in the 1800s, which led to a boom in the seafood and agricultural industries; to the early days of institutions, such as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore; to the founding of long-standing celebrations, including Olde Princess Anne Days, the Deal Island Skipjack Races, and the National Hard Crab Derby.
