Book excerpt: Love stories are as old as time. What makes this one different is that it is true. It is an enchanting story that starts during the Second World War. An artillery officer about to go overseas on active service meets a pretty girl in a small village in the south of England. She is a talented draftswoman in the drawing office of a key wartime research establishment. They fall in love. His embarkation leave turns into a whirlwind courtship. Separated by war and duty, they never lose hope that one day they will be together. There is a first-hand account of the Allied landings in North Africa and the invasion of Sicily. A charming picture is painted of the day-to-day life of the young girl as she awaits his return, with fascinating glimpses of life in wartime Britain. Their dreams come true and they are married. In the post-war years their life together is rich in travel and adventure; the scene moves to Singapore, Hong Kong, America and France. It contains many amusing incidents and anecdotes that portray everyday life in the half- century that has just ended. Through it all runs the thread of their timeless romance. It is a lovely story that never loses its enchantment. It will have special appeal in an age of some cynicism about romance and marriage. Once started, it is hard to put this book down.

The cruel struggles of the memories in the book only lead down a more, even yet, cruel undecided fate, which could become her last moments. Though, no time is to spare, in finding the whereabouts of her location in her abduction, she struggles forth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The part of me which must succeed must never get lost, but the part of me which needs to live must be free to wander without fear of wandering. I found that line in an old novel of mine I looked to today to respond to my bitterly Jesuit-trained friend Eugene in response to poems he sent me; my response is meant to illuminate the richness of our seminar yesterday and at the same time the decades-ongoing banter he and I swim in, into which you also are welcome to wade (...and this is not writing, but wandering, which, as I said, I must). What the Jesuits taught you and Eugene indeed is to read (and other friends of mine, some still tormented). You Catholics are almost Jewish with meaning, almost Platonic with palimpsests and palindromes, cabalistically crusted with gematriac gems. We all hate tedious messages such as this, but things could be worse--I might send you all the notes my mother sends to me, or I might read this novel to you over the telephone, charges reversed. Anyhow, if I find your address Ill send you this mess, and good luck to you. Had you never learned to read you might just hunt mushrooms and catch fish and never worry with Herakleitos. It is a dive. The Devils Den is bleak and not at all colorful. The red and blue bulbs cast so little light they leave the eye straining to discern forms dark and colorless. Oh, you can make out everything, but no detail or inherent hue is manifest. It is as if your eyes felt things blindly in the dark, like radar outlining the somethings, where they are, but not at all like it would be to see a streaking screaming silver fighter plane spinning and careening, laying out its spider-web fiber staid and stable in the sky as the plane itself is mercurialness, this cloudy trail a flag, a battle banner strong but flexible in the wind left behind by its airplane-lover in his wake so that even were the plane to crash this flag would remain waving like a delicate white woman with a white lace handkerchief, would still stand on the platform loyal when the train had long gone from sight--but here is none of the shape and color and detail and character which would be in the white sky of bright day--just blips, the scantiest pattern only, by which a submarine carefully will navigate the profoundest blackest depths perilous and oppressive....She is white, all white. She is long and pale, her dress is white eyelet taffeta puffed at he shoulders and dipped at the breast (and her breasts are pale as marshmallows as I see and almost smell the warm dry softness of their sugar powder surface when she dips to pick up her carefully dropped handkerchief ),her hair is silver white, and in her hand she holds the white lace handkerchief which sketches vapor trails in the dark as she freely gesticulates pointing to herself, opening her arms away into the distant sky, and again pointing to herself.

She was groomed and eventually raped by a trusted family friend, and the experience changed her forever. Her young life was turned upside down by those experiences, and as she grew older, she began to realise that they affected everything and everyone in her life as well. Rainbows and Lollipops is her raw and honest account of survival, recovery, and empowerment. She does not shy away from uncomfortable topics or overdramatise these events. She does not pretend that her life was a bed of roses. Rather, she offers candid insight into her life, considering how it was changed when the darkness fell over her and how she has risen above to thrive again. As an adult, she has discovered a better and more resourceful way to heal herself and her relationships. She is proof that trauma does not have to destroy a life permanently. With the right support, she was able to move beyond the darkness, build resilience, and create her own new and remarkable life story and so can you. By changing her language, her attitude, and her thoughts, Melinda turned her life around. Now she lives a life driven by meaning and purpose, one in which she encourages other survivors to believe in the healing power of hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When technology solves the problems of energy, transportation, and physical health, the last problem to solve is humanity's spiritual unhappiness. Into this global scene comes Dr. Richard Gesar, brain physiologist and Tibetan tulku, who develops a spiritual technology, a way to measure and create spiritual experience. With his union of science and spiritual wisdom, he comes to create a humanity happy, whole, and at peace with God and with one another. It is at last a human completeness; or is it a final deception in which the only people able to see it are those willing to remain unhappy? Michael Pryor, skeptical and atheistic investigative reporter, and his brother Daniel, a Christian without peace of mind, come to similar conclusions from very different sides. A novel of intrigue and deception, philosophy and spirituality, in which the desire to find God is itself the lure. An end-times novel in which the Christians lose the final battle.

Book excerpt: A terrifying descent into madness, the first fearful steps on the path to recovery, this uncompromising memoir captures all the urgent and hypnotic tension of a commercial thriller. A Second Coming-the companion volume to Swartz's great long-poem "The Will to Christ"-is a probing investigation of the unconscious and metaphysical wellsprings of a singular poetic gift. And yet it is more. This story is without question the most accurate portrayal to date of the largely uncharted regions of schizophrenia, a compelling and solitary journey into yogic meditation and a massive abuse of cannabis non-indica. Swartz's manic delusion was the very overthrow of God and cleansing of the evolutionary process. After a twelve-day descent into terror, strapped to a hospital gurney, he emerges to an uncertain future and the realization that his whole experience was neither reality, nor, even more strangely, anything approaching fantasy.

Book excerpt: Dracula's Bedlam is the second novel in the StokerVerse series, conceptualised and brought to life by writers Chris McAuley and Dacre Stoker, the great-grandnephew of Dracula author Bram Stoker. Guest writer John Peel also contributes to this excellent addition to the series. It is a mixed media presentation with both story content and graphic novel elements from Frederick B. Roseman, along with an introduction from author of the Horror series Deadknobs and Doomsticks and much-loved UK personality Joe Pasquale. Is there a place more enthralling than that of the Asylum? The insane lurk in the shadows with gibbering mouths and twisted minds… Dr. Seward's asylum is particularly interesting; a serial killer has his mind peeled back, a mysterious nurse walks the halls with a sweet smile and devious mind… and, of course, there's the enigmatic Mr. Renfield… Set between the cracks of the original Dracula novel, the StokerVerse series hopes to shed a little light into the dark areas which were not wholly explored by author Bram Stoker. Familiar figures from Dracula and original characters created specifically for the StokerVerse appear in these dark and twisted tales. Dracula's Bedlam is the perfect read for a dark Halloween night… if you dare!

As founder and president of The Alban Institute, Loren Mead helped hundreds of churches steer around the shoals and whirlpools. In this new book, he reflects on what he learned over five decades of ministry and leadership, and offers inspiration for a new generation of leaders seeking to create change.
