Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somebody Knows, Somebody Cares: Reengaging Students through Relationship explores approaches to engaging young people in schooling through advocacy models of student support. In Australia, as in many nations, increasing social, cultural and linguistic diversity in school populations is producing complex challenges for education systems, schooling, teaching and learning. This book shares research informed insights into the multi-layered approaches required to support vulnerable students and sustain school-based mentoring programs. This edited collection covers theoretical and empirical perspectives on student disengagement from schooling through these key ideas: • The benefits of advocacy and mentoring programs on learning and school culture, particularly for students who are at risk of disconnection from learning. • Transforming schooling from the bottom up, by listening to students, teachers and principals and supporting educators in the development of situated and dynamic conditions for learning, through school-university partnerships. • The centrality of positive, caring teacher – student relationships, foregrounding emotional connection as a key component of effective learning, derived from the person-centred theory articulated by Carl Rogers. Written by a team of academics, teachers and school principals, Somebody Knows, Somebody Cares: Reengaging Students through Relationship is a valuable resource for teacher educators, principals, teachers, student welfare counsellors and counselling practitioners.

Book Synopsis Not Everyone Gets A Trophy by : Bruce Tulgan
Download or read book Not Everyone Gets A Trophy written by Bruce Tulgan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-23 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will frame Generation Y (children born between 1978-1991) for corporate leaders and managers at time when the corporate world is desperate to recruit and retain worked in this age group. It will debunk dozens of myths, including that young employees have no sense of loyalty, won't do grunt work, won't take direction, want to interact only with computers, and are only about money. This book will make a unique contribution in four key ways: It will disprove the idea that the key to recruiting, retaining, and managing this generation is to somehow make the workplace more "fun." To the contrary, Tulgan argues that the key to winning the respect of this generation, and getting the best effort out of them, is to carefully manage their expectations by never downplaying any negative aspect of a job. He will show managers how this Generation thinks transactionally in all negotiations. For them it's about what they will do for you today and what you will do for them today, not tomorrow, not five years from today, but today. He will explain why they have no interest in tying their futures to your corporation. But he will also make clear that they do have a well thought-out plan for themselves, one that requires that every job they take build up their skill sets, so they become more valuable employees for someone else--if and when you do not fulfill your end of the bargain, or drag your feet in doing so. But most of all, it will explain to corporate leaders that for this generation their personal life comes first, so that each job they take must accommodate itself to some need defined by their personal life. Tulgan argues that until you know the personal need the job can satisfy for a potential employee, you and the applicant may be talking past each other. Those needs are so beyond the imagination of most bosses that Tulgan devotes a third of the book to explaining how they affect the job decisions of this generation.

Download or read book Mending the Net written by Doug Stringer and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1981, Doug Stringer was a fitness instructor running his own exercise studio. He knew there was a God…but he lived as if God didn’t exist. Tired of his hypocrisy and disgusted with his life, he sat down one night and prayed, “Lord, if You can use someone like me after all I have done to wound Your heart, I make myself available to You.” God listened and immediately started to send needy people to Doug. Runaways. Strippers. Drug addicts. Homeless people. And Doug’s ministry, Somebody Cares, was born. Mending the Net: Bringing Hope in a Hurting World is the story of how one man with a servant’s heart was led to help others with the basic necessities of life while sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Doug’s ministry has grown exponentially from its humble beginnings, now reaching tens of thousands of people around the world who are dealing with personal crises or disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, or floods. Through it all, what has not changed was Doug’s firm belief that we are all called to show the lost and hurting that Somebody Cares and be part of the mended net that saves souls with love and compassion.
