She didn't care about Christopher's wife when she pursued an affair with him, but years later, she can admit that she was also wounded in the process. She's still dealing with the anguish of having aborted Christopher's baby and then losing the one man she believes ever loved her fully. In spite of her pain, Alexis realizes life must go on. More than a decade later, she has a successful pediatrics practice and is engaged to Jamar Duplessis. They have survived Hurricane Katrina, but with Hurricane Gustav threatening to strike, Alexis and Jamar must pack up and flee New Orleans. Unfortunately, Alexis finds herself right in the eye of another storm when she and Jamar decide to wait out the hurricane in Virginia Beach. Christopher and his wife Andrea live there, and are still nursing the wounds that Alexis helped to cause. Although Jamar is determined not to let this potential drama stress out his fiancée, an unexpected glitch in his finances demands his attention and nearly drives a wedge between him and Alexis. Someone is definitely out for revenge, but who? Is it Andrea? Christopher? Or maybe it's Alexis's former archrival, Nikki, who also makes a surprise appearance in Virginia Beach. Will Alexis be able to face the demons she thought she'd slayed years ago? This is a story of family, friendship, and forgiveness that proves that while time passes, some wounds never heal.

Book excerpt: If you want to fix your rebellious and disrespectful child, you need to start by fixing yourself. Are your kids pummeling you with demands and bossing you around with impunity? Have your once-precious preschoolers become rebellious, entitled, and disrespectful to authority? While there are plenty of so-called experts who might try to validate your convictions that you have done all you can to “fix” your “difficult” children, the hard truth is, they’re not doing you any favors by placing the responsibility solely on your children. Parenting struggles rarely originate from just one side. Instead, they erupt at the volatile intersection of a child's personality with a parent's own insecurities and behaviors. In When Kids Call the Shots, therapist and parenting expert Sean Grover untangles the forces driving family dysfunction, and helps parents assume their leadership roles once again. Parents will discover: Three common bullying styles used by kids Parenting styles that contribute to power balances Critical testing periods in a child’s development Coping mechanisms that backfire Personalized plans for calmly exerting authority in any scenario The solution to any problem begins with learning to control what you can control. In parenting, you’ve already learned how impossible it is to control your kids. Begin by controlling you!

Book excerpt: WOUNDS THAT NEVER HEAL The sixth book in the "Mattie series" and the sequel to Chains of Gold Wounds That Never Heal grips the heart and spirit of anyone who has ever been in love, had a shameful secret or has had harsh words inflict a stabbing wound. Being thrown from wealth into poverty may crush the human spirit and make the person question whether God still hears his cry for help. Poison arrows of sharp words pierce deeply and cause wounds that may never heal, in this last book of the "Mattie Series". The wounds along with Jewel Brady’s ominous secret threaten to create an irreparable chasm between her and Charlie O’Malley. Jewel lives in constant fear that Charlie, who she loves deeply, will discover a secret she has kept for months. She vows to tell no one that she gave birth to twins and gave them up for adoption. She and Charlie resume their romance after many months of separation, so she is forced to make a decision whether to confess her guarded secret. She is unaware that the father of her babies has learned about them and determines to confront her. Charlie struggles as he pastors a growing church in Buffalo, New York and is overwhelmed by the social pressures brought about by his popularity. He returns to Mississippi where he is confronted with the same social problems that caused him to leave when he was sixteen. He has to control his fear and anger to protect his family. You will be enthralled with the turn of events when Charlie learns the secrets held by Miss Allie’s trunk. Miss Williamson weaves the predicaments of the past five books into the final saga of Charlie Q. O’Malley and the people he loves.

Book excerpt: In these personal reflections on his thirty years of clinical work with victims of genocide, torture, and abuse in the United States, Cambodia, Bosnia, and other parts of the world, Richard Mollica describes the surprising capacity of traumatized people to heal themselves. Here is how Neil Boothby, Director of the Program on Forced Migration and Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, describes the book: "Mollica provides a wealth of ethnographic and clinical evidence that suggests the human capacity to heal is innate--that the 'survival instinct' extends beyond the physical to include the psychological as well. He enables us to see how recovery from 'traumatic life events' needs to be viewed primarily as a 'mystery' to be listened to and explored, rather than solely as a 'problem' to be identified and solved. Healing involves a quest for meaning--with all of its emotional, cultural, religious, spiritual and existential attendants--even when bio-chemical reactions are also operative." Healing Invisible Wounds reveals how trauma survivors, through the telling of their stories, teach all of us how to deal with the tragic events of everyday life. Mollica's important discovery that humiliation--an instrument of violence that also leads to anger and despair--can be transformed through his therapeutic project into solace and redemption is a remarkable new contribution to survivors and clinicians. This book reveals how in every society we have to move away from viewing trauma survivors as "broken people" and "outcasts" to seeing them as courageous people actively contributing to larger social goals. When violence occurs, there is damage not only to individuals but to entire societies, and to the world. Through the journey of self-healing that survivors make, they enable the rest of us not only as individuals but as entire communities to recover from injury in a violent world.

Book excerpt: A bold account of the development of human consciousness and spirituality over the ages and an examination of the dynamic global transformation of attitudes about healing. For more than fifteen years, Caroline Myss has studied why some people heal, while others do not. In her previous book, Anatomy of the Spirit, Dr. Myss illuminated the hidden interactions of belief and body, soul and cell to show how, as she inimitably puts it, "your biography becomes your biology." In Why People Don't Heal and How They Can, she builds on her earlier teachings of the seven different energy centers of the body to provide a vital self-healing program for physical and spiritual disorders. With her characteristic no-nonsense style and high-voltage storytelling, she exposes and explodes the five myths about healing, explains the cultural and individual contexts in which people become physically and spiritually ill and invested in "woundology," and teaches new methods of working with the challenges that the seven energy centers embody. To help you get and stay on the path to wellness, Dr. Myss provides rituals and prayers for gaining a symbolic perspective on your life issues; for bolstering your personal power; and for connecting with a universal divine energy. Dr. Myss's breakthrough views on energy medicine and her active approach to healing life issues and physical illness will help you overcome the mental blocks that keep you from becoming well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scars...what are they? Scars are evidence that someone or something once caused an injury to a certain area which resulted in a wound that eventually healed. They are the result of a major or minor trauma. From an old battle scar to a previously painful paper cut, physical scars are real. But...what about the scars that eyes cannot see, cocoa butter cannot fade and a laser cannot remove? Truth is, we all have them; deeply hidden scars that are the evidence of past hurts. Some wounds never healed properly and caused more damage later on in the same area of the scar. It's called scar tissue which eventually will have to be surgically removed or it will cause an imperfection to the surface of the skin or internal damage. Yes...more pain, ! Have you ever heard the expression "that was the straw that broke the camel's back"? Let me break that down for you. If a lake is frozen over and a hammer continues to hit the lake's surface at the same place, it will eventually break. Okay...so...if you continue to experience the same type of hurt in the same area of your life, eventually you're going to break. The thing about life that we all must understand is that we all have wounds that eventually heal but whether seen on the surface or not, we all have scars. I wanted to start this book by introducing myself. Hello, my name is Latrese. I'm FLAWED but not ashamed & I COME WITH SCARS! A few years ago, there was a very popular television show that featured on primetime television in which people with issues with hoarding would receive help with cleaning up and out the clutter in their homes. I would watch the show as relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. would offer their opinions about what happened to their loved one that caused them to go "downhill." As the video cameras peruse the house, inside and out, the viewers are able to see the total disorganization, disarray, and dysfunction; some hazardous materials, dirty piles of clothing, food, newspapers, toys, cars, numerous animals, etc.; just a "bunch of junk"! Some of the people, labeled as "Hoarders," were faced with some serious risks. Many were at risk of losing their homes, others at risk of losing custody of their children, some were at risk of losing relationships with their family members, significant others, friends, etc. and all of them jeopardized their health. One might think, "That person is crazy. There must be something psychologically wrong with them. Don't they care about their health? Don't they care about their relationships? Don't they care about their children?" TRUTH is, if some of us would take a realistic look into our emotional mirrors, our hearts look just like their homes. The thing that struck me as interesting is how the show would bring in a clean-up crew and a psychologist/counselor to assist the "Hoarder" with cleaning up the mess; however, the "Hoarder" was allowed to mark (by placing an "X" on various objects) what stayed and what would go. That action alone reinforced my belief that at the end of the day, we can have a million people in our lives and in our corners but it is strictly up to us to determine who or what stays in our hearts and who or what goes. My hope for you is that after reading this book, you will choose to live free.
