Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Unwritten Laws of Organized Foxhunting and Comments on the Usages of the Sport of Riding to Hounds in America One of the most detrimental things that could have occurred to organized hunting in America wasthe atmosphere of society rather than sports manship given to the early hunt clubs. Riding to foxhounds cannot properly exist in any locality in the world unless every member of the community is interested in its welfare. The noble sport has lived successfully through two cen turies in Great Britain because it has been con ducted in the most democratic manner possible, and mere social or financial status has nothing to do with one's privilege to subscribe to and hunt with the local hounds. His qualities as a true sportsman and his support of hunting according to his means are all the qualifications that are asked of a man. Hunt Clubs are practically non-existent in Great Britain, but let it not be thought for a moment that hunting organizations are not infinitely better managed than in America. It can truthfully be said that we, as a rule, have been hopelessly deficient in everything connected with organized hunting from showing ordinary courtesy to land owners, and the preservation of the hunting country as such, to the breeding and management of hounds. British hunting in modern times is generally on a subscription basis and managed by committees often elected by the subscribers or trustees, but never with the attitude of social superiority, often taken towards the rest of the community by the American hunt Club. Having ventured to say thus much as to the object of this little Publication, I shall conclude my brief Introduction by disclaiming every wish to appear either too sullenly insensible to the voice of censure, or to the smiles of approbation too feelingly alive. I wish not for the praises of a literary chronicle: let the critic lavish his encomiums on the more lengthened and maturer labours of the ma thematician, the logician, the poet, and the philosopher; thus reserving his patience and his praise for works of graver interest and weightier materials, to which, so oft and so judiciously. Loss of health means loss of nerve, and these gone, capacity for enjoy ment is gone, so far as hunting is concerned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of English Fox-Hunting A preface must to a certain extent partake of the nature of an autobiography, and I fear that the majority of readers regard autobiographies with suspicion. Moreover, there are few books which require a preface to the first edition, though in subsequent editions it is only fair that the author should have an opportunity of making explanations in cases where he has been misunderstood. Nor, beyond acknowledging the kind help which I have received from friends and acquaintances, should I have made any prefatory remarks to the following pages, if it were not that I have been urgently persuaded to do so by those whose literary experience is far greater than my own. I have often heard it stated that the character of a book reflects the character of the author, and such undoubtedly must be the case when the book has any claim for originality. But in a work which only pretends to a moderate degree of research there can be little if any index to the character of the author, who accordingly should not be accused of personal vanity for writing a preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Fox-Hound I have received of late years so many letter from parties who have come into possession of what has become known as the Trigg Dog, and from others desiring to secure them, that I have at last decided to write this book, intended as a brief history of my dogs and those of Messrs. Birdsong and Maupin from which the Trigg Dog originated. I shall be brief, confining myself to facts gathered from my personal acquaintance with both Mr. Birdsong and Mr. Maupin and their dogs, and from my numerous correspondence with these and other famous lovers of the chase, extending over thirty-five years. Some of the letters I have submitted herewith, believing they would be interesting and instructive to the new generation of sportsmen. I have the greatest confidence in the strains mentioned herein, but the different modes of hunting the fox in various sections require certain qualities to predominate; then, there are "as many men of many minds" as there are dogs of "high and low degree." I believe, after twenty-five years acquaintance with them, during which time I have tested their speed, nose, hunting qualities, etc., with representative dogs from nearly every famous pack of the country, and from the evidence of their worth as testified to by many letters from those who have run them after various game in other States, that I have a strain of dogs at least as good as those of their famous ancestors or any of to-day. I know from almost daily experience that I can run to earth or catch the red fox. To those of you who have my dogs, and to you who have other strains, we invite correspondence. I will be glad to exchange information, experiences, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fox Hunting in Delaware County, Pennsylvania: And Origin and History of the Rose Tree Fox Hunting Club If any there are interested in fox hunting who have the idea that it is a sport of comparatively recent origin in this country, it is well to disabuse their minds of this great error, for it is well authenticated by history that the English and French people who first became settlers in America brought the love of this sport with them from Great Britain and France, where it had been the pastime of English, Irish, and French gentlemen from very early ages. Many of the bravest and most daring of the officers of the Continental army during the American Revolution had been trained in horsemanship and courage by fox hunting. The Quaker settlers of Pennsylvania, no doubt, had a prejudice against it in the earlier days, but the farmers among them soon learned to look upon the sport with a friendly submission, as it was taken up by those in the commonwealth who were disposed to follow the hounds, and at an early date there were quite a few of these. Book excerpt: Updated, with new research and over 100 revisions Ten years later, they're still talking about the weather! Kate Fox, the social anthropologist who put the quirks and hidden conditions of the English under a microscope, is back with more biting insights about the nature of Englishness. This updated and revised edition of Watching the English - which over the last decade has become the unofficial guidebook to the English national character - features new and fresh insights on the unwritten rules and foibles of "squaddies," bikers, horse-riders, and more. Fox revisits a strange and fascinating culture, governed by complex sets of unspoken rules and bizarre codes of behavior. She demystifies the peculiar cultural rules that baffle us: the rules of weather-speak. The ironic-gnome rule. The reflex apology rule. The paranoid pantomime rule. Class anxiety tests. The roots of English self-mockery and many more. An international bestseller, Watching the English is a biting, affectionate, insightful and often hilarious look at the English and their society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study re-examines the dynamics of race relations in the post–Civil War South from an altogether fresh perspective: field sports. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy white men from Southern cities and the industrial North traveled to the hunting and fishing lodges of the old Confederacy—escaping from the office to socialize among like-minded peers. These sportsmen depended on local black guides who knew the land and fishing holes and could ensure a successful outing. For whites, the ability to hunt and fish freely and employ black laborers became a conspicuous display of their wealth and social standing. But hunting and fishing had been a way of life for all Southerners—blacks included—since colonial times. After the war, African Americans used their mastery of these sports to enter into market activities normally denied people of color, thereby becoming more economically independent from their white employers. Whites came to view black participation in hunting and fishing as a serious threat to the South’s labor system. Scott E. Giltner shows how African-American freedom developed in this racially tense environment—how blacks' sense of competence and authority flourished in a Jim Crow setting. Giltner’s thorough research using slave narratives, sportsmen’s recollections, records of fish and game clubs, and sporting periodicals offers a unique perspective on the African-American struggle for independence from the end of the Civil War to the 1920s.
