But what are these rights that you can’t see – the Invisible Gold of today’s Knowledge Economy. What can you do with them and how can Asian businesses foster the innovation and creativity they protect? From the patents protecting Creative Technology’s MP3 player and Tata’s ‘Nano’ car to ‘Tsingtao’ and ‘Singha’ branded beer, IPRs protect this Invisible Gold. David Llewelyn challenges Asian businesses to build up their reserves of Invisible Gold and governments to build a culture that encourages and rewards innovation and creativity. Using Asian examples throughout, David Llewelyn explains what the rights are, answers the questions and sheds much-needed light on this crucial but little-understood part of doing business in the 21st century.

Download or read book Employees’ Intellectual Property Rights written by Sanna Wolk and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2016-04-24 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today’s knowledge-based global economy, most inventions are made by employed persons through their employers’ research and development activities. However, methods of establishing rights over an employee’s intellectual property assets are relatively uncertain in the absence of international solutions. Given that increasingly more businesses establish entities in different countries and more employees co-operate across borders, it becomes essential for companies to be able to establish the conditions under which ownership subsists in intellectual property created in employment relationships in various countries. This comparative law publication describes and analyses employers’ acquisition of employees’ intellectual property rights, first in general and then in depth. This second edition of the book considers thirty-four different jurisdictions worldwide. The book was developed within the framework of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), a non-affiliated, non-profit organization dedicated to improving and promoting the protection of intellectual property at both national and international levels. Among the issues and topics covered by the forty-nine distinguished contributors are the following: • different approaches in different law systems; • choice of law for contracts; • harmonizing international jurisdiction rules; • conditions for recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments; • employees’ rights in copyright, semiconductor chips, inventions, designs, plant varieties and utility models on a country-by-country basis; • employee remuneration right; • parties’ duty to inform; and • instances for disputes. With its wealth of information on an increasingly important subject for practitioners in every jurisdiction, this book is sure to be put to constant use by corporate lawyers and in-house counsel everywhere. It is also exceptionally valuable as a thorough resource for academics and researchers interested in the international harmonization of intellectual property law.
Book Synopsis Intellectual Property Rights and ASEAN Development in the Digital Age by : Lurong Chen
Download or read book Intellectual Property Rights and ASEAN Development in the Digital Age written by Lurong Chen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trade-investment-service-intellectual property (IP) nexus remains at the heart of economic development and the main features of which are global value chains (GVCs) and digitalisation. The protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) has become a critical issue not only for advanced economies but also for emerging markets. This edited volume contributes to the debates on IPR protection and economic development from the perspective of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states. The book provides insights into the mechanism and evidence on how effective IPR protection will increase economic and social welfare via promoting innovation activities and providing incentives to diffuse knowledge and transfer technologies. Written by economists and lawyers from the region, these experts share their latest findings and thoughts on how countries in Southeast Asia have been progressively improving IPR protection and increasing the interoperability of different IPR regimes through regional cooperation to facilitate business operations in the context of digital transformation.

Book Synopsis Intellectual Property Policy, Law and Administration in Africa by : Caroline B. Ncube
Download or read book Intellectual Property Policy, Law and Administration in Africa written by Caroline B. Ncube and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the harmonisation of Intellectual Property (IP) policy, law and administration in Africa. Two recent developments have brought this topic to the fore. The first is the escalation of long-standing efforts to establish a Pan-African Intellectual Property Organisation (PAIPO), a continental initiative. The second is the current sub-regional attempt to operationalise the IP provisions of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)’s Protocol on Trade (articles 9b and 24) and its Protocol on Science, Technology and Innovation (article 2m). Intellectual Property Policy, Law and Administration in Africa discusses the viability of such initiatives with particular reference to the current socio-economic status of Africa’s nations. With a view to contributing to future developments in Africa at both a continental and sub-regional level, the author considers this issue through the lens of advancing the public interest in IP. Ncube argues that harmonisation initiatives ought to be crafted in a way that is supportive of the development aspirations of African states. Consequently, she urges due consideration of individual states’ unique conditions and aspirations in any harmonisation venture, a necessity outlined in article 7 of the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. This book will be of great relevance to scholars and policy makers with an interest in IP law and African law in general.

Download or read book Intellectual Property Protection Reform written by Craig T. Scalise and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, intellectual property-based industries have become more critical to the world's economies. However, where most of the writing on the economics of intellectual property protection policy has been speculative, this book offers a testable economic theory. The theory of 'natural intellectual property protection reform' analyses how economic development influences IPR policy and in turn, how IPR reform affects innovation.Empirical support for the theory, and a case study based on data gathered from Singapore's software developers, are included. The book should be of interest to economists, and those who form economic policy, are in the information industries or follow Singapore's economic development.
