Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Side-Lights on the Oxford Movement Certainly what we were taught at home was not the same religion as that which was preached by Mr. Robbins and the majority of the clergy at that time, and we were week after week much diverted by the anti-puseyite discourses we had to listen to. As a sort of protest we used to be taken on Saints' days to a church some three miles distant where good Church doctrines were preached. These festivals occur about once a month in the Anglican calendar, and we used to like them very much. My mother's observance of them was considered a very bad sign by Mr. Robbins and his curate. Download or read book The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders written by Lawrence N. Crumb and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-03-20 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Movement began in the Church of England in 1833 and extended to the rest of the Anglican Communion, influencing other denominations as well. It was an attempt to remind the church of its divine authority, independent of the state, and to recall it to its Catholic heritage deriving from the ancient and medieval periods, as well as the Caroline Divines of 17th-century England. The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders is a comprehensive bibliography of books, pamphlets, chapters in books, periodical articles, manuscripts, microforms, and tape recordings dealing with the Movement and its influence on art, literature, and music, as well as theology; authors include scholars in these fields, as well as the fields of history, political science, and the natural sciences. The first edition of The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders and its supplement contained comprehensive coverage through 1983 and 1990, respectively. The Second Edition, with over 8,000 citations covering many languages, extends coverage through 2001; it also includes many earlier items not previously listed, corrections and additions to earlier items, and a listing of electronic sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Movement transformed the nineteenth-century Church of England with a renewed conception of itself as a spiritual body. Initiated in the early 1830s by members of the University of Oxford, it was a response to threats to the established Church posed by British Dissenters, Irish Catholics, Whig and Radical politicians, and the predominant evangelical ethos - what Newman called 'the religion of the day'. The Tractarians believed they were not simply addressing difficulties within their national Church, but recovering universal principles of the Christian faith. To what extent were their beliefs and ideals communicated globally? Was missionary activity the product of the movement's distinctive principles? Did their understanding of the Church promote, or inhibit, closer relations among the churches of the global Anglican Communion? This volume addresses these questions and more with a series of case studies involving Europe and the English-speaking world during the first century of the Movement.
Book Synopsis The Spirit of the Oxford Movement by : Owen Chadwick
Download or read book The Spirit of the Oxford Movement written by Owen Chadwick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-27 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spirit of the Oxford Movement brings together some of Owen Chadwick's most important and characteristic essays on the Tractarian Movement and the Church of England in the Victorian era. Along with studies of Newman, Liddon, Edward King and Henri Bremond are included more general essays surveying the reaction of the Established Church and on the nature of Catholicism. In particular the revision of the long-unobtainable analysis of 'The Mind of the Oxford Movement' illustrates once again the profound contribution Owen Chadwick has made to our understanding of religion in Britain in the nineteenth century.
