Book Synopsis Anglo-American Relations at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 by : Seth P. Tillman
Download or read book Anglo-American Relations at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 written by Seth P. Tillman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1919 marks a high point in the world power and prestige of Western democracy. World War I was ended, and the victory belonged to the democratic states. Theirs was the sober task-and the unique opportunity-of formulating a settlement that would guarantee impartial justice and preserve the peace. Dr. Tillman examines here the documentary account of Anglo-American diplomatic relations during this critical period. He shows the interaction of personalities in both governments, the patterns of cooperation and conflict as they negotiated major issues of war and of peace, and the political repercussions in both England and America that led either to compromise or to defeat of some of the best purposes of the Versailles Treaty. Originally published in 1961. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Problems of the Peace Conference The purpose of the lectures here published is to give a rapid survey of the principal elements in that territorial settlement of Europe which has been pronounced "the most reasonable part of the work of the Conference" of Paris. Each problem is placed in its historical setting, while at the same time the effort is made to view it as something demanding practical solution in the treaties of peace. The perspective of proceedings as seen at Paris has been kept in mind throughout, although the authors have not felt at liberty to enter into the details of negotiations which may have become known to them in their official capacity. Limits of time and space restrict the treatment to Europe, and to those parts of Europe which came before the Conference for settlement. Hence Russia is necessarily omitted. The lectures are printed substantially as delivered at the Lowell Institute last January, with only incidental revision. In the spelling of place names the official local usage has been followed except where there is a well established English form. The first four chapters were prepared by Mr. Haskins, the last four by Mr. Lord. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How History Was Used in the Wars of the Twentieth Century: Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace looks at how historical thinking shaped decisions for war and peace in Germany and the United States during the twentieth century. It examines the writing and public careers of the leading historians in each nation. Robert J. Norrell suggests it is useful to analyze where the discipline of history has succeeded and failed to understand war and the many attempts to institute lasting peace. The narrative of this book testifies to the avid commitment of historians, statesmen, and the public to understanding the past and how these lessons and perspectives can influence the present.
