Book excerpt: This edition, considerably revised since Russian publication in 1954, now includes the theories of thermal and chain explosion reviewed in the light of very recent work. The classical example of the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen is treated in detail, and among the large selection of chain reactions analyzed are the gas phase cracking of hydrocarbons and the oxidation of methane and other hydrocarbons in the liquid phase. The book summarizes many recent and unpublished Soviet investigations in the field. Originally published in 1959. Book excerpt: This translation, in two volumes, of an introductory paper to a Symposium on Chemical Kinetics and Reactivity, held in Moscow in 1954, has been enlarged and revised by the author, winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1956 and one of the two or three top flight Russian physical scientists. Volume 1 covers a wide range of important work and includes a survey of radical and chain reactions and a discussion of chemical changes, direct mono- and bi-molecular processes, ionic reactions, heterogeneous catalysis, initiation and destruction of radical chains on solid surfaces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Problems of Chemical Kinetics and Reactivity discusses two types of explosion in detail. These two types are the thermal and chain explosion. Points are also given in the book about thermal theory on a quantitative basis. The book explains that the science of combustion develops as a special branch of chemical kinetics. The text also covers the chain ignition concept. Such concept shows that phosphorus would not ignite below some critical oxygen pressure and no traces of reaction could be detected under such condition. Another type of concept discussed in the book is the branched chain reactions. The book proves that the existence of limit phenomenon determines the practicability of using nuclear energy. Factors such as pressure, density, temperature, and vessel dimension transform inert condition to violent reaction. Formulas and computations to prove the concepts mentioned are provided in the book. The book will provide valuable insight to nuclear physicists, scientists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Kinetics and Dynamics of Elementary Gas Reactions surveys the state of modern knowledge on elementary gas reactions to understand natural phenomena in terms of molecular behavior. Part 1 of this book describes the theoretical and conceptual background of elementary gas-phase reactions, emphasizing the assumptions and limitations of each theoretical approach, as well as its strengths. In Part 2, selected experimental results are considered to demonstrate the scope of present day techniques and illustrate the application of the theoretical ideas introduced in Part 1. This publication is intended primarily for working kineticists and chemists, but is also beneficial to graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range of courses requiring a good basic understanding of chemical kinetics is extensive, ranging from chemical engineers and pharmacists to biochemists and providing the fundamentals in chemistry. Due to the wide reaching nature of the subject readers often struggle to find a book which provides in-depth, comprehensive information without focusing on one specific subject too heavily. Here Dr Margaret Wright provides an essential introduction to the subject guiding the reader through the basics but then going on to provide a reference which professionals will continue to dip in to through their careers. Through extensive worked examples, Dr Wright, presents the theories as to why and how reactions occur, before examining the physical and chemical requirements for a reaction and the factors which can influence these. * Carefully structured, each chapter includes learning objectives, summary sections and problems. * Includes numerous applications to show relevance of kinetics and also provides plenty of worked examples integrated throughout the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Kinetics and Mechanism considers the role of rate of reaction. It begins by introducing chemical kinetics and the analysis of reaction mechanism, from basic well-established concepts to leading edge research. Organic reaction mechanisms are then discussed, encompassing curly arrows, nucleophilic substitution and E1 and E2 elimination reactions. The book concludes with a Case Study on Zeolites, which examines their structure and internal dimensions in relation to their behaviour as molecular sieves and catalysts. The accompanying CD-ROM contains the "Kinetics Toolkit", a graph-plotting application designed for manipulation and analysis of kinetic data, which is built into many of the examples, questions and exercises in the text. There are also interactive activities illustrating reaction mechanisms. The Molecular World series provides an integrated introduction to all branches of chemistry for both students wishing to specialise and those wishing to gain a broad understanding of chemistry and its relevance to the everyday world and to other areas of science. The books, with their Case Studies and accompanying multi-media interactive CD-ROMs, will also provide valuable resource material for teachers and lecturers. (The CD-ROMs are designed for use on a PC running Windows 95, 98, ME or 2000.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book are devoted to the elementary reactions of small molecules in the gas phase, with some emphasis on reactions important in combustion. The first three chapters cover experimental measurements made at high temperatures, mainly using shock waves and flames; the final chapter describes discharge flow methods near room temperature. The authors-all active in the fields they describe were asked to aim at a level intermediate between a textbook and a review, designed for readers not already familiar with this branch of chemical kinetics. We hope the book will prove especially useful to research workers in related subjects, to research students, and perhaps as source material for the preparation of lectures. The examples have been chosen to illustrate the theoretical basis of the topics rather than attempt a complete coverage. Professors Wagner and Troe describe the remarkable progress made in recent years in measuring dissociation rates for small molecules. Tests ofunimolecular reaction theories are usually made in the 'fall-off' region of pressure: the kinetics change from first order to second order as the pressure is reduced. For large molecules this region lies below atmospheric pressure and is relatively easily accessible. For molecules with four or less atoms, however, the fall-off region lies well above atmospheric pressure: it has been explored using the high pressure shock tube techniques developed by the authors.
