Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Researches on the Food of Animals, and the Fattening of Cattle: With Remarks on the Food of Man; Based Upon Experiments Undertaken by Order of the British Government The present Work is based on an extensive series of experiments which were made at the instance of the Government. The original object of that inquiry was to determine the relative influence of barley and malt in feeding cattle; but as the opportunity seemed a favorable one for investigating some scientific problems of great importance to physiology, and of extreme value in the physical management of man and animals, advantage was taken of it, by permission, to extend the experiments so as to include these objects. It is well known to those who have been in the habit of late years of following the researches which have been undertaken to elucidate the nature of the growth of animals, that it is now generally agreed that the muscular part of animals is derived from the fibrinous or nitrogenous ingredients of the food, while the source of animal fat has been disputed. The present experiments seem to demonstrate that the fat of animals cannot be produced from the oil of the food, but must be evolved from the calorifient, or heat-forming portion of the aliment, essentially assisted by its nitrogenous materials. By following out this principle, the author has been enabled to detect an important relation subsisting between the nutritive and calorifient portion of the food, upon the determination of which, for the various conditions of animals, he considers the laws of animal dieting depend. Book Synopsis Farm Foods by : Emil Theodor von Wolff

Book excerpt: An attempt has been made to supply English agriculturists and students of agriculture with a book of which only those who have read the original can appreciate the urgent need. It is significant of the paltry and inefficient way in which England has approached the problem of applying science, system, experiment and education to agriculturists, that such an epoch-making book as this should have been allowed to remain inaccessible to the farming community for 20 years ... The book is simply the record of 42 years work by the experimental stations of the German government on the feeding of farm animals and the feeding-values of farm foods. In England such institutions are solely represented by the private enterprises of Sir Joh Lawes and the Royal Agricultural Society. Wolff makes it possible for every practical man to understand the meaning of real food, of digestibility, of digestible constituents. The economic standards that Wolff lays down have been deduced from exhaustive and accurate experiments ... Perhaps the most valuable feature of the book is that of the tables given in the Appendix. These are universally recognized and form the basis of most of the data as to foods and feeding given in the agricultural press and general agricultural literature - translator's preface.

This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the scientific contributions published within the Animals topical collection “Feeding Strategies to Improve Sustainability and Welfare in Animal Production”. Originally a Special Issue, it has turned into a permanent collection, with its first article being published in July 2019 and more than 30 published articles a year later: evidence of the great interest from the scientific community regarding the topics addressed. The articles, which are grouped by species (poultry, ruminants, pigs, etc.) and by topic, deal with a wide range of arguments that, first of all, highlight the extraordinary complexity and diversity that exists in the animal production sector, and then, the great influence that nutrition and feeding can have in terms of optimizing the use of environmental resources and improving the welfare of farmed animals. In addition, all this is closely connected with the urgent need to safeguard the resources of the planet on which we live.
