Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Old Historic Landmarks of Virginia and Maryland: Described in a Hand-Book for the Tourist Over the Washington, Alexandria and Mount Vernon Electric Railway This hand-book was prepared especially for tourists over the New Electric Railway from the National Capital, by way of Alexandria, to Mount Vernon. In it will be found not only a summary of the life, services, and character of General Washington, and a description of his home, his farms, and his farming operations, and the changes which have been incident to his land estate since his passing away, but also descriptions of numerous other outlying historic landmarks on both shores of the Potomac. The writer trusts that the book, hastily prepared in brief intervals of pressing duties, may prove an acceptable companion to all strangers wayfaring among the many interesting historic points which will be opened to them by this convenient and delightful route of travel to the home and tomb of the venerated Washington. To Dr. J. M. Toner, of Washington City, the successful editor and publisher of Washington journals, diaries, and other papers; to Mr. Hubert Snowden, of the Alexandria Gasette; Mr. H. Harrison Dodge, the courteous and capable superintendent of Mount Vernon; Mr. J. R. C. Lewis, of Berryville, Virginia; Mr. William F. Carne, Mr. Lawrence Washington, Mrs. Dr. William Powell, and Miss Mary Lloyd, of Alexandria; Rev. M. L. Poffenberg, of Broad Creek Church; Miss Whittingham, of Baltimore, and others, the writer hereby acknowledges his obligations for valuable assistance. Should any historic reader find in the book inaccuracies, or wish to suggest additions of new facts pertaining to any of the "landmarks," they will be gratefully received for a subsequent edition. And banners floating on the breeze, And cannon booming loud again? Not for ambition s selfish deeds--Not for the eonq'ror's Dame, A people come with grateful praise, This day the glorious mede is given, And hearts in unison, But for the nobler fame, As well befits to celebrate. The birth of Washington! By man world wide accorded And grander grown by time--From East and West and North and South, The fame that conies of duty Throughout our broad domain, And life of deeds sublime. At the close of the Revolution commenced the birthday celebrations and birthnight balls in honor of the successful chief. They soon became general all over the republic. The first of these was held in Alexandria. In the large cities where public balls were customary, the birthnight ball in the olden time was the gala assembly of the season, and was attended by an array of fashion and beauty. The first President always attended on the birthnight. The etiquette was, not to open the festivities until the arrival of him in whose honor it was given; but so remarkable was the punctuality of Washington in all his engagements, whether for businesss or pleasure, that he was never waited for a moment, in appointments for either. The minuet, now obsolete, for the graceful and elegant dancing of which Washton was conspicuous, in the vice-regal days of Lord Botetourt in Virginia, declined after the Revolution. The commander-in-chief danced for his last time a minuet in 1781 at the ball given in Fredericksburg in honor of the French and American officers on their return from the triumphs of Yorktown. The last birthnighl he attended was in Alexandria, February...

This book was released on 2017 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest days of settlement, South Temple was Salt Lake's most prestigious street. In 1857, William Staines built the Devereaux House, Salt Lake's first of many mansions. The once-bustling Union Pacific Depot eventually found itself increasingly isolated. Downtown's "gleaming copper landmark" overcame numerous hurdles before its construction was finally finished, and the Steiner American Building helped usher in acceptance of Modernist architecture. Evolving to reflect its continued prominence, in 1975, the thoroughfare's core became the city's first local historic district, and in 1982, it made the National Register of Historic Places. Author and historian Bim Oliver celebrates the changing landmarks along these famous eighteen blocks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind guide to fifty of the most important cultural and historic sites in the United States guaranteed to fascinate, educate, and entertain—selected and described by the former director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. From Massachusetts to Florida to Washington to California, 50 Great American Places takes you on a journey through our nation’s history. Sharing the inside stories of sites as old as Mesa Verde (Colorado) and Cahokia (Illinois) and as recent as Silicon Valley (California) and the Mall of America (Minnesota), each essay provides the historical context for places that represent fundamental American themes: the compelling story of democracy and self-government; the dramatic impact of military conflict; the powerful role of innovation and enterprise; the inspiring achievements of diverse cultural traditions; and the defining influence of the land and its resources. Expert historian Brent D. Glass explores these themes by connecting places, people, and events and reveals a national narrative that is often surprising, sometimes tragic, and always engaging—complete with photographs, websites for more information, and suggestions for other places nearby worth visiting. Sites you would expect to read about—in Boston, New York, and Washington, DC—are here, as well as plenty of surprises, such as the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, or Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, or the Village Green in Hudson, Ohio; less obvious places that, together with the more well-known destinations, collectively tell the story of America. For families who want to take a trip that is both educational and entertaining, for history enthusiasts, or anyone curious about our country’s greatest places, this book is the perfect guide.
