Westerman is the author of "The Nameless Island: A Story of Some Modern Robinson Crusoes." The book, which was published in 1926, is in the line of survival stories similar to Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe." The plot is on a group of people, including boys and their instructor, who, after their ship, the Falcon, sinks, wind up stuck on an uninhabited island. The story keeps the island's name a secret, which heightens the sense of mystery. Using their creativity and cooperation, the survivors must negotiate the difficulties of their new surroundings in order to adjust and get over the barriers posed by the strange terrain. In order to survive, the protagonists construct shelter, obtain food, and deal with environmental challenges. As the castaways cooperate to create a new settlement on the unnamed island, the story tackles themes of resiliency, collaboration, and inventiveness. “The Nameless Island" was written by Percy F. Westerman, an adventure writer best known for his works set in military or maritime environments. Young readers will be enthralled with this gripping story of survival and friendship. The book offers its readers an interesting and creative journey while capturing the spirit of independence and discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion Technology: Some Modern Developments reviews modern developments in combustion technology, with emphasis on furnace flames. Topics covered range from equilibria and chemical kinetics in flames to corrosion and deposits in combustion systems, along with combustion aerodynamics and noise. Heat transfer from non-luminous flames in furnaces is also investigated. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book begins with an overview of some aspects of the chemistry of flames, followed by a discussion on the problem of corrosion and deposits. Subsequent chapters focus on aerodynamics and heat transfer in combustors, together with combustion noise and the application of aerodynamic principles to flame stabilization in high-speed flow; radiative heat transfer in combustion chambers; electrical properties of flames; flame-field interactions and their practical applications; generation of electricity by magnetohydrodynamic methods; and practical aspects of magnetohydrodynamic power generation. The book also assesses the influence of stirred reactor theory on design principles for high-performance combustion chambers and concludes with a summary of developments in the design and utilization of oil burners. This monograph should be of interest to engineers and combustion technologists.

Book excerpt: Conventional statistical methods routinely miss differences among groups or associations among variables. These differences are detected by more modern techniques. Hundreds of journal articles have described the reasons why standard techniques are unsatisfactory. Nonetheless, simple and intuitive explanations are generally unavailable. Without assuming any prior training in statistics, Part I of this book describes basic statistical principles from a point of view that makes their shortcomings easy to understand. Part II describes modern methods that address the problems covered in Part I. Using data from actual studies, many examples are included.

Book excerpt: In the motets of Philippe de Vitry, Guillaume de Machaut, and their contemporaries, tenors have often been characterized as the primary shaping forces, prior in conception as well as in construction to the upper voices. Tenors are shaped by the interaction of talea and color, medieval terms now used to refer to the independent repetition of rhythms and pitches, respectively. The presence in the upper voices of the periodically repeating rhythmic patterns, often referred to as "isorhythm," has been characterized as an amplification of tenor structure. But a fresh look at the medieval treatises suggests a revised analytical vocabulary: for many fourteenth- and fifteenth-century writers, both color and talea involved rhythmic repetition, the latter in the upper voices specifically. And attention to upper-voice taleae independently of tenor structures brings renewed emphasis to the significant portion of the repertory in which upper voices evince formal schemes that differ from those in the tenors. These structures in turn suggest a revision of the presumed compositional process for motets, implying that in some cases upper-voice text and forms may have preceded the selection and organization of tenors. Such revisions have implications for hermeneutic endeavors, since not only the forms of motet voices but the meanings of their texts change, depending on whether analysis proceeds from the tenor up, or from the top down. Where the presumed compositional and structural primacy afforded to tenors has encouraged a strand of interpretation that reads the upper-voice poetry as conforming to, and amplifying, the tenor text snippets and their liturgical contexts, a "bottom-down" view casts tenors in a supporting role and reveals the poetic impulse of the upper voices as the organizing principle of motets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While those who study human origins now agree that the evolution of modern human form extends back much further in time than the evolution of modern human behavior, they disagree sharply as to how to interpret the substantive data. Two fundamentally incommensurate interpretations of our origins, the "Replacement" camp and the "Continuity" camp, have now emerged out of pre-existing models and theories that go back to the last quarter of the 19th century. This book contends that these positions are based on radically different biases and assumptions about what the remote human past was like. The purpose of this volume is to examine those conceptual differences, not to arrive at a consensus, but rather to explore the reasons why a consensus might never be possible.

The Origins of Modern Humans: Biology Reconsidered allows field leaders to discuss and assess the assemblage of hominid fossil material in each region of the world during the Pleistocene epoch. It features new fossil and molecular evidence, such as the evolutionary inferences drawn from assessments of modern humans and large segments of the Neandertal genome. It also addresses the impact of digital imagery and the more sophisticated morphometrics that have entered the analytical fray since 1984. Beginning with a thoughtful introduction by the authors on modern human origins, the book offers such insightful chapter contributions as: Africa: The Cradle of Modern People Crossroads of the Old World: Late Hominin Evolution in Western Asia A River Runs through It: Modern Human Origins in East Asia Perspectives on the Origins of Modern Australians Modern Human Origins in Central Europe The Makers of the Early Upper Paleolithic in Western Eurasia Neandertal Craniofacial Growth and Development and Its Relevance for Modern Human Origins Energetics and the Origin of Modern Humans Understanding Human Cranial Variation in Light of Modern Human Origins The Relevance of Archaic Genomes to Modern Human Origins The Process of Modern Human Origins: The Evolutionary and Demographic Changes Giving Rise to Modern Humans The Paleobiology of Modern Human Emergence Elegant and thought provoking, The Origins of Modern Humans: Biology Reconsidered is an ideal read for students, grad students, and professionals in human evolution and paleoanthropology.

Book excerpt: This book is a recounting of some of the experiences I had while serving in the Army and Army Air Corps during WWII. The events are as accurate as I could recall without embellishment. I took the pictures of Don Lawless and Gene Van Houten in Don Woerpel's book, The 79th Fighter Group. This is an expanded version of my original book, "Memoirs of Ken Thompson, A WWII Fighter Pilot." I have also added my views on some of the issues facing our society.
