Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some of My Experiences in the Great War Lready the amount of literature produced by the war has reached formidable dimensions, and I hope I may be forgiven for adding to the ever-growing output. This is not intended as a serious study of military opera tions and deals with no controversial matters either strate gical or political. It is merely a humble effort to place on record some of the events I have witnessed in the various theatres of war. My thanks are due to the proprietors of the Daily Telegraph for allowing me to reproduce some of the scenes which I have from time to in their columns. R. Station and said to the recruiting officer that I wanted to enlist. The officer answered that he could help me to do that little thing. I was told to undress to be examined by the doctor. I was examined and passed O. K. After being examined. I was told to report in the morn ing all ready to go to camp. I then went back to the Delaware and Lackawanna R. R. I left home the next morning, July 27. 1917 on the train for Newark. Gilmore and her son, Edward, came to the station with me and there I met my mother, father, sister and Aunt Elizabeth and, just before the train came, Tom Corcoran came and bade me good-bye and good luck. I then bid them all good - bye. It was hard for me to leave them all behind but I felt that duty called, so made the best of it. I arrived in Newark and went to the Recruiting Station and had a little talk 'with the recruiting officer, who told me to come back at A. M. And go to lunch, this I did. In the meantime, while I was waiting for the time to pass, I took a walk in the city of Newark. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rediscovered World War I masterpiece—one of the few memoirs about the Italian front—for fans of military history and All Quiet on the Western Front An infantryman’s “harrowing, moving, [and] occasionally comic” account of trench warfare on the alpine front seen in A Farewell to Arms (Times Literary Supplement). Taking its place alongside works by Ernst JŸnger, Robert Graves, and Erich Maria Remarque, Emilio Lussu’s memoir as an infantryman is one of the most affecting accounts to come out of the First World War. A classic in Italy but virtually unknown in the English-speaking world, it reveals in spare and detached prose the almost farcical side of the war as seen by a Sardinian officer fighting the Austrian army on the Asiago plateau in northeastern Italy—the alpine front so poignantly evoked by Ernest Hemingway in A Farewell to Arms. For Lussu, June 1916 to July 1917 was a year of continuous assaults on impregnable trenches, absurd missions concocted by commanders full of patriotic rhetoric and vanity but lacking in tactical skill, and episodes often tragic and sometimes grotesque, where the incompetence of his own side was as dangerous as the attacks waged by the enemy. A rare firsthand account of the Italian front, Lussu’s memoir succeeds in staging a fierce indictment of the futility of war in a dry, often ironic style that sets his tale wholly apart from the Western Front of Remarque and adds an astonishingly modern voice to the literature of the Great War.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Threshold of War Personal Experiences of the Great European Conflict My diary is here illustrated and published in full, for the first time, and it is hoped that it will continue to reap for the good of the cause, since all proceeds go now to the Belgian Scholarship Committee. I saw old Russia under the regime of her Tzar prepare to mobilize her ponderous army just before the crash, and in the daily companionship of an unusually active and well informed Russian. From Russia I passed through Germany, into France, and it is believed that the most complete account of the amusing happenings during the first days of panic of my countrymen at the American Embassy there, drifted into the pages of this diary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secret Service All countries, as long as war is possible, need to be acquainted with the nature of foreign armaments, their state of readiness, and their probable disposition in the case Of war. In this book I have traced briefly the growth Of the British Secret Service and have given some personal experiences before turning to my main subject - the part played by the Secret Service in the Great War 1914 - 1918. The personal notes, which will be found chiefly in the early chapters, have been inserted partly to-ex plain the nature of the author's experiences which covered about forty years of secret service work, and partly to enable the reader to approach the climax of the Great War from the same angle as the author, in the light of these experiences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of the War 1861-65 I launch this little volume upon the great ocean of books, craving the indulgence of the kind reader for its shortcomings and imperfections, with the hope that it will not be viewed with a critic's eye, and that its imperfections may be charitably passed by. I have endeavored to relate my experiences in the great war of 1861-5 just as events occurred, as if I were detailing them to family or friends in private, or, as I have sometimes done in the past, at gatherings of veterans and friends during the past years. The old huntsman delights to tell of his tracking game in the snow, the chase through the woods and fields of the fox, deer and bear; the old sailor spins his yarns of the adventures and perils of the deep; the old fisherman will sometimes tell a big fish tale, and the old soldier is wont to join in with the rest and tell of his life in camp and field. This last I have endeavored to do in the following pages after the lapse of many years. I might have spun out the story much longer, but believing that brevity is often the soul of writing, as well as of wit, I have endeavored to be "brief and to the point." Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Experiences of the Boer War To be struck by the narrow formalism, and often unpractical character, of their strategical and tactical conceptions. If they are to be taken as the exponents of foreign military thought, then the study of the art of war has indeed fallen on evil days. In almost every article we mark the same defects. First, an entire ignorance of our system of government, of the elementary principles of political economy, and of the responsibilities of a great Colonial Empire. Second, a reckless treatment of evidence. Third, a positive disinclination to admit that the organisation, drill, training, and composition of Continental armies might possibly be bettered; and, lastly, the habit of testing strategical and tactical operations by a number of hard-and-fast rules. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Great War Dealing Particularly With Its Military and Diplomatic Aspects, and the Part Played in It By, the United StatesThe purpose of this volume is to offer the general reader an outline story of the War. In another book, The Strategy of the Great War, I have endeavoured to interpret the struggle in the broader sense-as a singular and enormously interesting departure from previous mili tary experience - due to the revolutionary conditions introduced by a sudden reversion to rigid positional, or trench warfare. The strategy of the war, determined in part by the military policies of the belligerents, but in still larger part by conditions over which the general staffs had little control, is a study in itself. In this book the purely strategical aspects of the war are discussed only in so far as it is necessary to establish the truer-relation of battles and campaigns to one another and to the ultimate result; The main idea is to give a clear and accurate running account of the war's origin and progress.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
