Since one of the reasons for the development of such facilities was the need for experimental data on the extremely high heat-transfer rates that a body experiences in re-entry conditions, the measurement of heat transfer constitutes a particularly appropriate initial subject area; moreover, the methods to be described are also applicable to a variety of problems other than those of hypersonic flow. An important feature of this AGARDograph is the unified treatment that it accords to the theory underlying heat-transfer gauges of various types. In addition, a detailed analysis is given of the magnitude of the errors in the values of heat-transfer rate deduced from the observations. Book excerpt: Heat-transfer rates at the stagnation point of 1.0-inch-diameter glass spherical models have been measured in shock-tube flows in air which corresponded to free-flight conditions between Mach numbers of 6.4 and 13.9 with stagnation temperatures up to 7,900 degrees R. The heat-transfer rates were determined from measurements of the surface-temperature change with time of a thin-film-platinum resistance thermometer. Test results are presented and compared with the results from the theories of Lees (Jet Propulsion, April 1956) and Fay and Riddell (AVCO Research Report 1). The experimental results obtained give lower heat-transfer rates than both theories but are more compatible with results from the theory of Lees. These test results are also compared with thermocouple data and with the results obtained by the use of similar configurations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is presented of a research program aimed at the improvement of high-temperature strain gages of the electrical resistance type. Potential ceramic and metal components were evaluated and a gage was devised that was based on these evaluations. This gage (NBS 5B) was flexible and easy to install; however, it lacked resistance stability at higher temperatures. In an attempt to minimize this deficiency, ceramic cements were developed that showed greater electrical resistivity than had been previously observed in the range 800 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; also, a technique was devised for increasing the resistance to ground by applying a fired-on ceramic coating to the grid of a specifically developed unbacked gage. A study was made of the cause of the erratic response of cemented gages that had not been preheated prior to use. There were strong indications that the erratic response was caused mostly by the rapid decrease in resistance that accompanied structural changes in the cement.
