Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Jefferson Correspondence, 1775-1787 I have just time to enclose to you a copy of General Lee's let ter written the day after the cannonade of Fort Sullivan. It came to hand two days after his other, tho' written 4 days before it. This was a glorious affair. Lord Dunmore has had a most complete drubbing. The eet left 7 fine cables and anchors worth at least three of their tenders completely furnished fell into our hands. If we had had only 2 more 18 pounders and powder and ball in plenty, we might have taken or utterly destroyed the Dunmore, and all their tenders. The Fowey did not attempt to assist the Dunmore, the other prepared once to fire, but received a shot between wind and water, on which she went off on a careen. I hope every one here, especially of our late Committee. Will remember how often I in sisted on erecting batteries and attacking this eet. If I could have been listened to, I could have agreed to be hanged if I would not have saved Nor folk and destroyed the eet before it. 4 18's and as many 9 pounders would have done their business. Our governor is still so sick that he can not attend to business. I am presiding member, and am so pestered with letters and to answering them that I have not time to add but a few words more. The Carolinians have sent the clothes, which G. Lee wanted for their people they have also sent a good stock of gunpowder, and we are sending what - can be spared from here to North Carolina to replace what they have sent. For God's sake set on foot an expedition against Detroit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Philosopher, diplomat, politician, inventor, writer, architect, even gardener, from a historical perspective Thomas Jefferson emerges as an extraordinary individual one who was clearly many things to many people. But, too, precisely because of these same collective endeavors, he has become so much a part of America's ongoing search for itself, so deeply entwined in the tapestry of America's grand democratic experiment, that, in many instances, succeeding generations have been largely unable to picture him clearly and objectively in his own life and times. The most comprehensive portrait of the founding fathers can be seen in their personal letters and journal entries. Jefferson is no exception, and those he wrote concerning war and revolution through many of the most critical episodes in early American history are of singular importance. The format of the letters has been preserved whenever possible and, collectively, they provide a unique glimpse into the character and thought processes of Jefferson, warrior and revolutionary. Whether he is writing to peers such as James Madison, Patrick Henry and George Washington, to French associates such as the Marquis de Lafayette and Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, or even to British adversaries such as the American traitor Benedict Arnold and Sir Guy Carleton, the British Governor of Canada, Jefferson demonstrates a striking understanding of the issues. And whether the subject might be an argument for national retaliation, the treatment of prisoners of war or the application of blockades in naval engagements, he writes with remarkable clarity, insight and eloquence. As the text presents, in their entirety, the original written correspondence which succeeding generations of historians have repeatedly cited as the basis for the interpretation of events or conclusions of fact, Thoughts on War and Revolution is both a comprehensive reference resource, as well as a unique supplement to the existing literature.
