Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Forgotten Heroes and Their Place in American History This book is a tribute to some men who have been forgotten by Fame. Though they won for us more than half the territory within our present borders, they lie for the most part in obscure and neglected graves, some of them under alien skies, their amazing exploits all too often unperpetuated in bronze or stone. Though their names hold small significance for their countrymen of the present generation, yet they played great parts in our national drama. It was the persistent and daring assaults made by such men as Bean and Nolan upon the Spanish boundaries which undermined the power of Spain upon this continent and paved the way for Travis, Bowie, Bonham, Crockett, and Houston to effect the liberation of Texas. Captain Reed of the General Armstrong, after holding off a British force twenty times the strength of his own, sunk his vessel rather than surrender. To a pirate and smuggler named Jean Lafitte, more than any other person save Andrew Jackson, we are indebted for saving New Orleans from capture and Louisiana from invasion. After two decades of history-making in Hindustan, Boyd came back to his own country and ably seconded William Henry Harrison in breaking the power of the great Indian confederation which threatened to check the white man's westward march. That this ideal has been reached, however, to any great extent, cannot be successfully claimed. Educators hitherto have confined their attention chiefly to the mental side of instruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hero Tales from American History by Henry Cabot Lodge and Theodore Roosevelt brings together stories of the heroism, grit and determination of some well-known and lesser-known people who played significant roles in shaping the history of America. It brings out the bravery, daring and endurance to fight against all odds. In the bargain this title is nothing short of inspirational. Both authors are men of eminence in their own right and hence there is an underlying authoritative ring in the narrative which stands out. Hero Tales from American History starts with a touching preface that defines the foundations on which the present day USA is built. The book provides chapters dedicated to various men of honour including George Washington, John Quincy Adams, Lincoln and many others. Each section is well researched and gripping. The two authors have taken great pains in bringing out the valour and perseverance of their respective heroes which makes this title difficult to put down once started. Little known facts, anecdotes and incidents find their place in the book and portions dedicated to important events like the Battle of Trenton and Storming of Stony Point are worth a mention. The authors provide visual respite through various illustrations spread across the length of the book which give perspective to the narrative. In its endeavour, Hero Tales from American History not only caters to students of American history but the casual reader as well, it inspires the reader to be a better human being and appreciate the hardships and challenges the heroes in this book overcame. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Early American History This is a history reader for the Fourth Grade. Written primarily for Philadelphia school children, there is an em phasis on characters and incidents connected with the early history of Pennsylvania that would be overbearing in a book of more general appeal. That the course of study adopted by the Philadelphia Board of Education in 1917 forms the outline for this little book finds its justification in the fact that it was my priv ilege and pleasure to be closely associated with those who made this course of study, and with those responsible for its final form. This book is, first, a testimony to my firm belief in and hearty approval of the course of study and my intense interest in its successful Operation; and, second, is an effort to gather in one book all the material, Widely scattered and in some cases obscure, which this grade requires. That most children have a strong dislike for the study of history is a severe criticism of the methods employed in the past with a subject that should be of transcendent interest to all boys and girls. Book excerpt: The pages of the past are full of characters who remind us that history depends upon the great deeds of men and women, whether famous or humble. Where would America be without George Washington, or Daniel Boone, or Sojourner Truth, or Babe Ruth? Where would we be without so many characters who are less well remembered today? Historians and biographers regularly come across stories of little-known or forgotten heroes, and this book provides a chance to rescue some of the best of them. In Forgotten Heroes, thirty-five of the country's leading historians recount their favorite stories of underappreciated Americans. From Stephen Jay Gould on deaf baseball player Dummy Hoy; to William Leuchtenburg on the truth behind the legendary Johnny Appleseed; to Christine Stansell on Margaret Anderson, who published James Joyce's Ulysses; these portraits can be read equally for delight, instruction, and inspiration Taken together, however, the whole is much more than the sum of its parts. Every culture needs heroes who lead by example and uplift us all in the process. Too often lately, historians have been more intent on picking apart the reputations of previously revered Americans. At times it has seemed as if the academy were on the attack against much of its own culture, denying its past greatness while making heroes only of its dissidents and doubters. Yet as this collection vividly demonstrates, heroes come in many shapes and sizes, and we all gain when we remember and celebrate them. Forgotten Heroes includes nearly as many women as men, and nearly as many people from before 1900 as after. It expands the traditional definition of hero to encompass not only military figures and politicians who took risks for great causes, but also educators, religious leaders, reformers, labor leaders, publishers, athletes, and even a man who started a record company. Many of them were heroes of conscience -- men and women who insisted on doing the right thing, no matter how unpopular or risky, commanding respect even from those who disagreed. Some were famous in their day and have since been forgotten, or remembered only in caricature. Others were little-known even when alive -- yet they all deserve to be remembered today, especially at the gifted hands of the authors of this book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Stories From American History: For Elementary Schools This book is intended to be used as a supplementary historical reader for the sixth and seventh grades of our public schools, or for any other pupils from twelve to fifteen years of age. It is also designed for collateral reading in connection with the study of a formal text-book on American history. The period here included is the first fifty years of our national life. No attempt has been made, however, to present a connected account, or to furnish a birds-eye view, of this half century. It is the universal testimony of experienced teachers that such materials as are pervaded with reality serve a useful purpose with young pupils. The reason is plain. Historical matter that is instinct with human life attracts and holds the attention of boys and girls, and whets their desire to know more of the real meaning of their country's history. For this reason the authors have selected rapid historical narratives, treating of notable and dramatic events, and have embellished them with more details than is feasible within the limits of most schoolbooks. Free use has been made of personal incidents and anecdotes, which thrill us because of their human element, and smack of the picturesque life of our forefathers. It has seemed advisable to arrange the subjects in chronological order. As the various chapters have appeared in proof, they have been put to a practical test in the sixth grade in several grammar schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Great Men and Their Deeds: American Heroes and Heroism "Interest" is the first word in modern psychology. The child will learn faster and better when he is "interested," when his mind is thoroughly alive and intensely active. Moreover, when he is kept in pleasurable interest his development is more normal and healthy. Nowhere is this principle more applicable or the results more manifest than in the reading-classes. Give the children dry and uninteresting historical facts or didactic rules of no interest to them and quite foreign to their undeveloped natures, and you have given them a soporific potion which will prove effectual in retarding their advancement. On the other hand, give them reading-lessons which relate, in simple language, adventures, narrow escapes, thrilling incidents in history and travel, where bold and high-toned courage is manifested, and three distinct and important things will be accomplished: first, their thorough interest in the reading exercise will be secured; secondly, a healthy love for history will be cultivated; and thirdly, a strong moral sentiment will be stimulated. Perhaps no set of reading-lessons will do more in all three of these directions than such entertaining incidents in history as show real bravery and high-principled heroism. One advantage from a book of this sort is found in the ethical lessons conveyed by the incidents related. It is in reality a practical book of morals. The best moral teaching is by example, and the stories here told impart so clearly lessons in kindness, in honesty, in true courage, in real benevolence, that the words haec fabula docet are in no way needed. Children always and everywhere respect heroism and love the hero. But it is important to distinguish between brute bravery and real moral courage. The incidents of heroism given in this book are arranged in a progressive or ascending order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
