Book Synopsis Some White Folks by : Jennifer Chudy
Download or read book Some White Folks written by Jennifer Chudy and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering exploration of the unexamined roots and effect of racial sympathy within American politics. There is racial inequality in America, and some people are distressed over it while others are not. This is a book about white people who feel that distress. For decades, political scientists have studied the effects of white racial prejudice, but Jennifer Chudy shows that white racial sympathy for Black Americans’ suffering is also a potent force in modern American politics. Grounded in the history of Black-white relations in America, racial sympathy is unique. It is not equivalent to a low level of racial prejudice or sympathy for other marginalized groups. Some White Folks reveals how racial sympathy shapes a significant number of white Americans’ opinions on policy areas ranging from the social welfare state to the criminal justice system. Under certain circumstances, it can also spur action—although effects on political behavior are weaker and less consistent, for reasons Chudy examines. Drawing on diverse quantitative and qualitative evidence and integrating insights from multiple disciplines, Chudy explores the origins, importance, and complexity of racial sympathy, as well as the practical implications for political and movement leaders. A companion to the rich literature on prejudice, Some White Folks demonstrates the multifaceted role of race in American politics and public opinion.

Jakes" On people of the cloth On love, faith, and sex On prayer About trying, "Bill Cosby, Johnny Cochran, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Frederick Price, and Aretha Franklin don't try .... Is it luck or just a coincidence that these folks don't try - they just are? Could it be that by either design or accident they've found out why they're here?" On Wynton Marsalis On Magic Johnson and Earl Graves On P.Diddy On building a better place Findout three reasons why people like Denzel Washington, Montel Williams, Bryant Gumble, Mike Wilborn, Judge Glenda Hatchett, Angela Bassett, Tom Joiner, Hank Aaron, Maya Angelou and many others make it to the top. Book Synopsis Shhh, Grown Folks Is Talking by : Jacquinita A. Rose
Download or read book Shhh, Grown Folks Is Talking written by Jacquinita A. Rose and published by Grown Folks' Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am “Mom” because of my nurturing parents -- My Grandparents, Leroy and Roberta. I wanted my children to realize that I didn’t start life at 40. The knowledge of how to fairly delegate chores and to regulate video game usage did not happen by osmosis. For my sake and theirs, my children needed to know their family history. So, why not begin with me. As a kid and a teenager, I marveled at how Grandma and Grandpa, although not “proper” English speakers, had a way of explaining things. So, any words from their lips were right and true. Nestled comfortably beneath the sofa, I relished every word. From my world view, as a child, there existed two categories: Grandma and Grandpa and then everybody else. Learn how I fought my way through adolescence, the pains of fitting in and cynicism, with the help and love of my grandparents and some well-organized mischief.
