Book Synopsis The Quinoa Genome by : Sandra M. Schmöckel
Download or read book The Quinoa Genome written by Sandra M. Schmöckel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on quinoa, providing background information on its history, summarizing recent genetic and genomic advances, and offering directions for future research. Meeting the caloric and nutritional demands of our growing population will not only require increases in overall food production, but also the development of new crops that can be grown sustainably in agricultural environments that are increasingly susceptible to degradation. Quinoa is an ancient crop native to the Andean region of South America that has recently gained international attention because its seeds are high in protein, particularly in essential amino acids. Quinoa is also highly tolerant of abiotic stresses, including drought, frost and salinity. For these reasons, quinoa has the potential to help address issues of food security – a potential that was recognized when the United Nations declared 2013 the International Year of Quinoa. However, more effort is needed to improve quinoa agronomically and to understand the mechanisms of its abiotic stress tolerance; the recent development of genetic and genomic tools, including a reference genome sequence, will now help accelerate research in these areas.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Reference Methods for Plant Analysis by : Yash Kalra
Download or read book Handbook of Reference Methods for Plant Analysis written by Yash Kalra and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-12-29 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Reference Methods for Plant Analysis is an outstanding resource of plant analysis procedures, outlined in easy-to-follow steps and laboratory-ready for implementation. Plant laboratory preparation methods such as dry ashing and acid and microwave digestion are discussed in detail. Extraction techniques for analysis of readily soluble elements (petiole analysis) and quick test kits for field testing are also presented. This handbook consolidates proven, time tested methods in one convenient source. Plant scientists in production agriculture, forestry, horticulture, environmental sciences, and other related disciplines will find the Handbook a standard laboratory reference. The Handbook was written for the Soil and Plant Analysis Council, Inc., of which the editor is a board member. The council aims to promote uniform soil test and plant analysis methods, use, interpretation, and terminology; and to stimulate research on the calibration and use of soil testing and plant analysis. This reference will help readers reach these important goals in their own research.

Book Synopsis Invasive Plants: Ecological and Agricultural Aspects by : S. Inderjit
Download or read book Invasive Plants: Ecological and Agricultural Aspects written by S. Inderjit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive plants have an impact on global biodiversity and ecosystem function, and their management is a complex task. The aim of this book is to discuss fundamental questions of invasion ecology, such as why particular communities become more invasible than others, what the mechanisms of exclusion of native species by invaders are, and whether invasion can be predicted. In addition, agricultural practices influencing invasion, the environmental and economic costs of invasion as well as possible management strategies are discussed. Readers will get a unique perspective on invasion ecology through employing general principles of ecology to plant invasions.
Book Synopsis The Development of African Drama by : Michael Etherton
Download or read book The Development of African Drama written by Michael Etherton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book explores concepts such as ‘traditional performance’ and African theatre’. It analyses the links between drama and ritual, and drama and music and diagnoses the confusions in our thought. The reader is reminded that drama is never merely the printed word, but that its existence as literature and in performance is necessarily different. The analysis shows that literature tends to replace performance; and drama, removed from the popular domain, becomes elitist. The book’s richness lies in the constantly stimulating analysis of ‘art’ theatre, as exemplified in protest plays, in African adaptations and transpositions of such classical subjects as the Bacchae and Everyman, in plays on African history, on colonialism and neo-colonialism. The final chapters argue that the form of African drama needs to evolve as the content does.
