Book excerpt: Juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) migrating through the Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta (the Delta) in central California have higher mortality rates than salmonids migrating through other west coast estuaries. Some hypotheses for high mortality rates include entrainment into water export facilities, physical alterations of the river system, and predation. Of these factors, predation is considered the least understood but may have the largest impact. Predation from large populations of non-native piscivorous fishes in the Delta is believed to effect abundances of Central Valley Chinook salmon, however sufficient data supporting this hypothesis is scarce. In this study, I investigate the possibility of using three molecular methods (qPCR, metabarcoding, SNP) to improve fish diet analyses by measuring the gastric evacuation of Chinook salmon in the stomachs of two common Delta predators, largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Before molecular analysis can occur using field samples, it is important to conduct laboratory feed trials to determine how factors affect gastric evacuation and the detectability of DNA within predator digestion systems. My experiment was conducted to determine gastric evacuation of Chinook DNA and visual decay of organic tissue within the digestive tracts of two common piscivores in the Delta at different temperatures (15.5 ̊C and 18.5 ̊C) and feed ratios (predator weight: prey weight). Results from metabarcoding and qPCR analysis indicate greater detection ability and longer durations of digestion at higher feed ratios and decreased temperature. Temperature and ratio effect was species dependent with a larger effect on evacuation within channel catfish compared to largemouth bass. Channel catfish also had slower digestion rates, indicating lower metabolism and a longer duration of DNA detection. Lastly, visual degradation of prey tissue followed a highly correlated decay pattern to metabarcoding read count and qPCR copy number over time. Gastric evacuation results from this study can provide information for future models on the effect of species, time, temperature, and feed ratio on digestion rate needed to predict population level predation occurring on native salmonids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is almost thirty years since Professor G. G. Winberg established the basis for experimental studies in fish energetics with the publication of his monograph, Rate of Metabolism and Food Requirements of Fishes. His ultimate aim was to develop a scientific approach to fish culture and management, and the immense volume of literature generated in the ensuing years has been mainly in response to the demand for information from a rapidly expanding, world-wide aquaculture industry and to the shortcomings of contemporary practices in fisheries management. The purpose of this book is not to review this literature compre hensively, but, assuming an informed readership, to focus attention on topics in which new knowledge and theory are beginning to be applied in practice. Most emphasis has been placed on food; feeding; production (growth and reproduction) and energy budgeting, as these have most influence on the development of fish culture. Some chapters offer practical advice for the selection of methods, and warn of pitfalls in previous approaches. In others the influence of new theory on the interpretation of studies in fish energetics is discussed in the context of resource allocation and adaptation. We hope that the scope of material presented here will have sufficient interest and value to help significantly to fulfil Winberg's original objectives.

Book excerpt: The study of estuaries and coasts has seen enormous growth in recent years, since changes in these areas have a large effect on the food chain, as well as on the physics and chemistry of the ocean. As the coasts and river banks around the world become more densely populated, the pressure on these ecosystems intensifies, putting a new focus on environmental, socio-economic and policy issues. Written by a team of international expert scientists, under the guidance of Chief Editors Eric Wolanski and Donald McClusky, the Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science, Ten Volume Set examines topics in depth, and aims to provide a comprehensive scientific resource for all professionals and students in the area of estuarine and coastal science Most up-to-date reference for system-based coastal and estuarine science and management, from the inland watershed to the ocean shelf Chief editors have assembled a world-class team of volume editors and contributing authors Approach focuses on the physical, biological, chemistry, ecosystem, human, ecological and economics processes, to show how to best use multidisciplinary science to ensure earth's sustainability Provides a comprehensive scientific resource for all professionals and students in the area of estuarine and coastal science Features up-to-date chapters covering a full range of topics

Book excerpt: GUTSHOP '84 was the fourth in a series of workshops on various aspects of fish feeding (Table 1). Initially, the organizers merely invited regional (Pacific Northwest) fisheries scientists to share, and possibly develop mutual solutions to, the many technical problems associated with trying to obtain meaningful, quantitative information from fish stomach contents, and the subsequent statistical treatment and interpretation of the multivariate data. Since then, although not explicitly based upon any internal cycle, these scientists and increasingly more and more dispersed colleagues continued to congregate for workshop deliberations every two or three years. From the 49 attendees at the first workshop, the number of participants had grown to 65 at GUTSHOP '78, and 107 at GUTSHOP '81. By the third workshop, we were drawing scientists from across the U. S. and Canada, and from as far away as Norway. The topical content of the workshops has also evolved from the predominantly technical aspects of fish collection and stomach contents processing techniques, statistical analysis, and data manipulation and presentation to considerations of theoretical ecology, bioenergetics, and behavior.

Book excerpt: Over the past few years, it has become more and more obvious that fish farming will become increasingly important in the future. As fish farming moves into its industrial phase, technology will be an important factor in determining its successful development. It is therefore important for scientists & representatives from the aquaculture industry to meet to define state of the art and explore future development of fish farming technology for different fish species. 81 papers and abstracts were presented at the conference. The proceedings reflect the different sections of the conference: the plenum sessions and three parallel sessions: Juvenile marine fish, open production plants, closed production plants and poster sessions.
