Book Synopsis Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics, Applications by : Thomas Y. Hou
Download or read book Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics, Applications written by Thomas Y. Hou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on "Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics and Applications'' was held in CalTech on March 25-30, 2002. The conference was the ninth meeting in the bi-annual international series which became one of the highest quality and most successful conference series in Applied mathematics. This volume contains more than 90 contributions presented in this conference, including plenary presentations by A. Bressan, P. Degond, R. LeVeque, T.-P. Liu, B. Perthame, C.-W. Shu, B. Sjögreen and S. Ukai. Reflecting the objective of series, the contributions in this volume keep the traditional blend of theory, numerics and applications. The Hyp2002 meeting placed a particular emphasize on fundamental theory and numerical analysis, on multi-scale analysis, modeling and simulations, and on geophysical applications and free boundary problems arising from materials science and multi-component fluid dynamics. The volume should appeal to researchers, students and practitioners with general interest in time-dependent problems governed by hyperbolic equations.

Download or read book Directions in Partial Differential Equations written by Michael G. Crandall and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directions in Partial Differential Equations covers the proceedings of the 1985 Symposium by the same title, conducted by the Mathematics Research Center, held at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. This book is composed of 13 chapters and begins with reviews of the calculus of variations and differential geometry. The subsequent chapters deal with the study of development of singularities, regularity theory, hydrodynamics, mathematical physics, asymptotic behavior, and critical point theory. Other chapters discuss the use of probabilistic methods, the modern theory of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, the interaction between theory and numerical methods for partial differential equations. The remaining chapters explore attempts to understand oscillatory phenomena in solutions of nonlinear equations. This book will be of great value to mathematicians and engineers.
Book Synopsis Variational Approach to Hyperbolic Free Boundary Problems by : Seiro Omata
Download or read book Variational Approach to Hyperbolic Free Boundary Problems written by Seiro Omata and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the study of hyperbolic free boundary problems possessing variational structure. Such problems can be used to model, among others, oscillatory motion of a droplet on a surface or bouncing of an elastic body against a rigid obstacle. In the case of the droplet, for example, the membrane surrounding the fluid in general forms a positive contact angle with the obstacle, and therefore the second derivative is only a measure at the contact free boundary set. We will show how to derive the mathematical problem for a few physical systems starting from the action functional, discuss the mathematical theory, and introduce methods for its numerical solution. The mathematical theory and numerical methods depart from the classical approaches in that they are based on semi-discretization in time, which facilitates the application of the modern theory of calculus of variations.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Evolutionary Partial Differential Equations by : Xiaxi Ding
Download or read book Nonlinear Evolutionary Partial Differential Equations written by Xiaxi Ding and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings from the International Conference on Nonlinear Evolutionary Partial Differential Equations held in Beijing in June 1993. The topic for the conference was selected because of its importance in the natural sciences and for its mathematical significance. Discussion topics include conservation laws, dispersion waves, Einstein's theory of gravitation, reaction-diffusion equations, the Navier-Stokes equations, and more. New results were presented and are featured in this volume. Titles in this series are co-published with International Press, Cambridge, MA.
Book Synopsis Calculus of Variations and Geometric Evolution Problems by : F. Bethuel
Download or read book Calculus of Variations and Geometric Evolution Problems written by F. Bethuel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international summer school on Calculus of Variations and Geometric Evolution Problems was held at Cetraro, Italy, 1996. The contributions to this volume reflect quite closely the lectures given at Cetraro which have provided an image of a fairly broad field in analysis where in recent years we have seen many important contributions. Among the topics treated in the courses were variational methods for Ginzburg-Landau equations, variational models for microstructure and phase transitions, a variational treatment of the Plateau problem for surfaces of prescribed mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds - both from the classical point of view and in the setting of geometric measure theory.
Book Synopsis Mathematics Applied to Science by : Jerome Goldstein
Download or read book Mathematics Applied to Science written by Jerome Goldstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics Applied to Science: In Memoriam Edward D. Conway presents a compilation of articles as a lasting tribute to Edward Conway III. This book covers a variety of topics, including molecular electronic energies, partial differential equations, density matrix, electron density functional, and climate change. Organized into 13 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the large-time behavior of one-dimensional motion in a model gas whose particles have a discrete set of allowed velocities. This text then explores the operator splitting techniques for the solution of time dependent differential equations. Other chapters describe a Monte Carlo simulation procedure for evaluating the relaxation rate of an excited state vibrational population of a diatomic in a simple solvent. This book discusses as well the numerical solution of nonlinear differential equations. The final chapter deals with the physical, thermal, and dynamical properties near the surface of the Earth. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.

Download or read book Cellular Automata and Modeling of Complex Physical Systems written by Paul Manneville and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellular automata are fully discrete dynamical systems with dynamical variables defined at the nodes of a lattice and taking values in a finite set. Application of a local transition rule at each lattice site generates the dynamics. The interpretation of systems with a large number of degrees of freedom in terms of lattice gases has received considerable attention recently due to the many applications of this approach, e.g. for simulating fluid flows under nearly realistic conditions, for modeling complex microscopic natural phenomena such as diffusion-reaction or catalysis, and for analysis of pattern-forming systems. The discussion in this book covers aspects of cellular automata theory related to general problems of information theory and statistical physics, lattice gas theory, direct applications, problems arising in the modeling of microscopic physical processes, complex macroscopic behavior (mostly in connection with turbulence), and the design of special-purpose computers.
