Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Hebrew Grammar: To Which Is Prefixed a Dissertation on the Two Modes of Reading, With or Without Points The principal design of the following work is to render the study of the Hebrew Language easy and agreeable. To accomplish this purpose the more effectually, I have introduced it to the public in an English dress. It is impossible to acquire an accurate knowledge of any language, without ascending to its first principles: But as a continued and minute attention to these is dry and uninteresting, every encouragement to be derived from perspicuity of method or facility of communication, becomes necessary. I found that the peculiarities of Hebrew Grammar admitted of a more easy and familiar explanation in English than in Latin. Besides, many persons who have had little opportunity of acquiring an extensive knowledge, either of Latin or of Greek, may incline to obtain some acquaintance with that language in which the first revelation of the Divine will was written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Hebrew Grammar As in many respects this grammar differs from other grammars, the plan which has been adopted requires a few explanations. Although modern works on Hebrew Grammar have been consulted by me, I did not think it advisable blindly to follow them. Experience has taught me that this would be far from prudent. The greatest scholars sometimes venture to create rules which have no sufiicient basis and even to quote examples which only exist in their imagination. Most curious instances of this could be given. But for what purpose? In spite of a few inaccuracies they remain men who by reason of their learning and hard work are entitled to our respect. I merely wish, therefore, to point out in few words in what particulars this manual follows a more or less independent course, and the motives which have induced me to do so. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accidence of Hebrew Grammar: With Exercises The chief difficulties that face one entering on the study of Hebrew arise from the number and instability of the masoretic points and the changes incident to the weak, quiescent and gut tural letters. The aim to lessen these difficulties will explain most of the departures in the following pages from what might otherwise seem a more logical method of treatment. The plan therefore has been to insist mainly on the verbs and to explain the elements only as they are needed for immediate use in the paradigms, introducing other portions Of the accidence at the point where they seemed to fit in best or were required for the exercises or where it was desired to dwell for a longer time on the verb that is being studied. The whole question of half-open syllables and intermediate shewa has been left untouched. The avoidance of the needless confusion and discouragement they cause was thought sufficient warrant for omitting what for the present are at best matters of uncertainty.' The same motive will also explain the absence of certain other technicalities in pronunciation and transliteration. A smaller type has Often been made use of for subordinate matter but very little has been inserted in the body of the work for mere reference. In the Exercises and in the illustrations of rules, I have sought to confine myself to strictly Biblical expressions. It is in all essen tial points a new and independent work, written with little reference to its pre decessor, and retaining but few of its distinguishing features. The simple fact that it is a work on the same subject, and by the same author, is all that I can adduce to justify the appellation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Hebrew Language of the Old Testament Grammar especially has derived great advantage from this enlargement Of our view of language. It has received the new honour of being waited on by philosophy, and has been raised to the rank of a science. It is now no longer enough for a Grammar to contain a mere collection Of the pheno mena of a language as to its forms and syntax; but it must show how the forms' have arived at their present state; it must endeavour to attain a correct feeling of the sense which every word has on account of its form; it must trace how time and the fortune of the nation have modified its native type; and lastly, must show how all its Syntactical peculiari ties are founded on the laws of thought, and that there is nothing arbitrary or accidental in them, but that every language is in harmony with itself, and, like every plant or animal, acknowledges its conformity to certain eternal laws, even in its departure from the particular organization and laws of others. Less than this will not satisfy the demands of our age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In this I have adopted, not without hesitation, the views of Sievers. I find it, however, quite impossible to follow him in rejecting all distinctions OT quantity in the vowels. It is no doubt possible that such matters may in the spoken language have worn a very different appearance, and especially that in the period of nearly a thousand years, over which the Old Testament writings extend, very great variations may have taken place. Our duty, however, is to represent the language in the form in which it has been handed down to us by the Masoretes; and that this form involves a dis tinction between unchangeable, tone-long, and short vowels, admits in my Opinion of no doubt. The discussion of any earlier stage of development belongs not to Hebrew grammar but to comparative Semitic philology.
