Book excerpt: Report of a Workshop on the Scope and Nature of Computational Thinking presents a number of perspectives on the definition and applicability of computational thinking. For example, one idea expressed during the workshop is that computational thinking is a fundamental analytical skill that everyone can use to help solve problems, design systems, and understand human behavior, making it useful in a number of fields. Supporters of this viewpoint believe that computational thinking is comparable to the linguistic, mathematical and logical reasoning taught to all children. Various efforts have been made to introduce K-12 students to the most basic and essential computational concepts and college curricula have tried to provide a basis for life-long learning of increasingly new and advanced computational concepts and technologies. At both ends of this spectrum, however, most efforts have not focused on fundamental concepts. The book discusses what some of those fundamental concepts might be. Report of a Workshop on the Scope and Nature of Computational Thinking explores the idea that as the use of computational devices is becoming increasingly widespread, computational thinking skills should be promulgated more broadly. The book is an excellent resource for professionals in a wide range of fields including educators and scientists.

Book excerpt: Art and Public History: Approaches, Opportunities, and Challenges examines the relationship between art and public history, outlining opportunities, challenges, and insights drawn from recent initiatives. With a special eye towards audience engagement and challenging historical narratives, all of the case studies and projects combine historical interpretation with contemporary and historical forms of visual art in unique and insightful ways. In addition to emphasizing the kind of practical advice found in the best case studies, this volume also offers a critical discussion of the concepts, tools, skills and technologies that contribute to fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration. These issues are addressed through sections on projects related to historical artworks; contemporary art and artists; and public art and the built environment. It addresses how public historians can incorporate art into their practice by outlining opportunities, challenges, and insights drawn from recent projects in the United States and Britain. These projects have taken place across a variety of platforms, including local and national history museums; art galleries; digital archives; classrooms; historical markers; and public art projects. The case studies incorporate the perspectives of different stakeholders, including public historians, artists, and audiences. The book will provide both public history practitioners and academics with useful guidance on how art can be integrated into public history initiatives, through critical discussion of tools, strategies, and technologies that contribute to fruitful collaboration and audience engagement across a variety of platforms. Readers will walk away with new ideas, strategies, and practical considerations for interdisciplinary projects to attract audiences in new ways.

This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most contentious issues in management of marine fisheries is the use of mobile bottom contacting gears, mainly trawls and dredges. There are growing concerns about the overall ecosystem impacts of bottom trawling. Some countries have banned bottom trawling and some major retailers refuse to stock fish caught using bottom trawl gears. However, such decisions are not always based on the best available scientific advice. The initiative “Finding common ground on the scientific knowledge regarding trawling best practices (TBP)” is an international collaboration of leaders in the scientific community to understand how trawling and other forms of towed bottom-contacting gears interact with seabed habitats and their biota. An analysis of the datasets to which the project has had access has revealed an underrepresentation of fisheries from tropical regions. Bottom trawl fishery is important in the region because it provides food and livelihoods for a large number of people. The TBP project in collaboration with FAO held an expert workshop in 2014 in Bangkok (Thailand) covering South and Southeast Asia and another workshop in 2016 in Cartagena (Colombia) covering the Latin American region. It was considered important to address the data gap and to engage stakeholders in Africa to raise awareness about potential best practices for trawling. Therefore, the TBP project, in collaboration with FAO, conducted a workshop on use of best available science in developing and promoting best practices for trawl fishing operations in Africa in March 2017 in Marrakech, Morocco. Key research institutions, universities, organizations and independent experts involved in data collection and research on assessment and/or management of ecosystem impacts of bottom trawling in Africa were invited to attend the workshop. The workshop first summarized the progress made in the five phases of the project and then (i) identified availability of data on spatial distribution of trawling activities, source of data as well as gaps in knowledge in the African region; (ii) evaluated availability and applicability of data on habitat, bycatch and ecosystem impacts of bottom trawling in the region; (iii) began to assemble data on trawling intensity in representative ecosystems; and (iv) developed an arrangement for expertise and data sharing, and for continuing to collaborate to develop best practices for trawling to enhance sustainability of marine ecosystem that contribute to food security and livelihoods in Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of writing (mid-October 1998) we can look back at what has been a very successful ECOOP’98. Despite the time of the year – in the middle of what is traditionally regarded as a holiday period – ECOOP'98 was a record breaker in terms of number of participants. Over 700 persons found their way to the campus of the Brussels Free University to participate in a wide range of activities. This 3rd ECOOP workshop reader reports on many of these activities. It contains a careful selection of the input and a cautious summary of the outcome for the numerous discussions that happened during the workshops, demonstrations and posters. As such, this book serves as an excellent snapshot of the state of the art in the field of object oriented programming. About the diversity of the submissions A workshop reader is, by its very nature, quite diverse in the topics covered as well as in the form of its contributions. This reader is not an exception to this rule: as editors we have given the respective organizers much freedom in their choice of presentation because we feel form follows content. This explains the diversity in the types of reports as well as in their lay out.

Book excerpt: Winner: Gold Axiom Business Book Award in Human Resources, 2010 This unique training resource offers trainers, educators, and facilitators a hands-on guide for designing and implementing training workshops and sessions that incorporate concepts learned from research on how the human brain best obtains, retains, and recalls information. By using this proven approach, trainers can create memorable workshops that are dynamic, fun, and effective events. The author shows how to design, develop, and deliver training from a whole-brain perspective that addresses the three different learning modalities (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic). Trainers can tap into accelerated learning strategies, address needs of different generational and diverse learners, and employ learner-tested techniques by applying key concepts from this book. This important book covers all the basics including selecting a topic specifically to address audience needs. It provides a step-by-step process for creating an outline, designing, developing, and using brain-friendly support materials, choosing the appropriate location (with the right equipment and furnishings), choosing the best time and date, and offers tips for presenting the content to learners in a creative and professional manner. Training Workshop Essentials offers brain-based strategies and techniques that go beyond typical training methods. These approaches will reach out and pull learners into the session's content and allow them to truly experience and retain the information long after the training ends.
