Book excerpt: Recent advances in the ultrashort laser technology have spawned a series of new directions of research in atomic and molecular physics. This work compounds two studies on the control and probing of atomic matter by ultrafast laser pulses. The first study is concerned with the control of quantum wavepackets focusing by chirped, ultrashort laser pulses. The ability to control wavepacket focusing is important for the achievement of specific excitation pathways, for controlling chemical reactivity or even molecular synthesis. In this work, we present a general method for wavepacket control in the weak field limit. Numerical simulations involving the ICN molecule confirm our theoretical framework. The second study refers to the ionization of sodium Rydberg states via half-cycle pulses (HCPs). For this process, our full quantum-mechanical calculations demonstrate an asymmetry in both ionization rates and ionization spectrum between the downhill (Stark red-shifted) and uphill (Stark blue- shifted) states. The asymmetry is explained by appealing to a semi-classical model of the interfering ionization pathways.

Book excerpt: "The fast advancement of ultrashort-pulsed high-intensity laser technology allows for generating an electric field equivalent to the Coulomb field inside an atom or a molecule (e.g., Ec=5.14x109 V/cm at the 1s orbit radius a0=0.0529 nm of the hydrogen atom, which corresponds to an intensity of 3.54x1016 W/cm2). Atoms and molecules exposed in such a field will easily be ionized, as the external field is strong enough to remove the electrons from the core. This is usually referred to "strong field". Strong fields provide a new tool for studying the interaction of atoms and molecules with light in the nonlinear nonperturbative regime. During the past three decades, significant progress has been made in the strong field science. Today, most phenomena involving atoms in strong fields have been relatively well understood by the single-active-electron (SAE) approximation. However, the interpretation of these responses in molecules has encountered great difficulties. Not like atoms that only undergo excitation and ionization, various dissociation channels accompanying excitation and ionization can occur in molecules during the laser pulse interaction, which imparts further complexity to the study of molecules in strong fields. Previous studies have shown that molecules can behave significantly different from rare gas atoms in phenomena as simple as single and double ionization. Molecular dissociation following ionization also presents challenges in strong fields compared to what we have learned in the weak-field regime. This dissertation focuses on experimental studies on ionization and dissociation of some commonly-seen small molecules in strong laser fields. Previous work of molecules in strong fields will be briefly reviewed, particularly on some open questions about multiple dissociation channels, nonsequential double ionization, enhanced ionization and molecular alignment. The identification of various molecular dissociation channels by recent experimental technical upgrades will be shown. The study of enhanced ionization in small molecules by time-resolved pump-probe experiments and varying-pulse duration experiments will be discussed, followed by an investigation of molecular alignment effect in sequential and nonsequential dynamics. At last, selective charge separation in charge asymmetric dissociation of heteronuclear diatomic molecules will be shown and conclusion and future work will be discussed."--Pages vii-viii.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of ionization dynamics of atoms and molecules illuminated with intense laser fields has attracted a great of interest in many disciplines over the decades. In this context, experiments of laser-matter interaction on the exploration of underlying mechanisms are considerably expanding with the advent of ultrashort femtosecond and attosecond laser pulses. However, the description of the laser irradiation process from a theoretical perspective is still a challenge, in particular for complex systems, such as the fullerene C60. To that end, we turn to exploit a fully fledged approach "Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory (TDDFT)" to describe electron emission induced by a broad range of laser pulses from weak to strong and from femtoseconds to attoseconds. The first part of the thesis contributes to the study of ionization dynamics of C60 irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses. Three ionization mechanisms, single-photon ionization, multi-photon ionization, and strong-field ionization, are extensively explored via photoelectron spectra (PES) and photoelectron angular distribution (PAD). Our analysis shows that for single-photon ionization, the PES basically reveal the occupied single-particle states which can be associated with the orbital depletion, and the PAD can be generalized into the anisotropy parameter which sensitively depends on the electronic states instead of the photon frequency. For multi-photon ionization, the PES are mostly generated by few uppermost orbitals, and the PAD reveal larger anisotropy with the increase of photon order. For strong-field ionization, the PES are featured by an extended plateau at high energies due to electron recollisions, and the delicate pattern on the plateau is analyzed by using a three-step model. The PAD of the high-energy electrons shows a strong alignment along the laser polarization, which is promising to generate a highly collimated electron beam. Moreover, we also discuss temperature effects from ionic motion on the PES and PAD. The second part of the work focuses on the ionization dynamics of simple atoms and molecules subject to extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses in the presence of an infrared (IR) field. Using similar laser parameters as experiments, we find that for He atom it leads to subcycle ionization on the attosecond time scale depending on the delay time between IR and XUV pulses, while for Ar atom this is absent. To better understand it, we make a systematic study on the effect of key laser parameters in the IR regime. Our results reveal that IR laser intensity and XUV frequency are decisive parameters. We further study resonance effects on electron emission in Na2 molecule, and we find that ionization pattern can be related to either IR laser frequency or the eigenfrequency of the system. We then extend it to the mid-IR (MIR) regime, where more complex ionization patterns are observed. Finally, we develop a schematic model accounting for electron emission in two-color laser field, and an analytical solution of ionization probability is also obtained, which well explains the main characteristics of the ionization pattern.

Book excerpt: Imaging the interaction of molecular ion beams with ultrafast intense laser fields is a very powerful method to understand the fragmentation dynamics of molecules. Femtosecond laser pulses with different wavelengths and intensities are applied to dissociate and ionize molecular ions, and each resulting fragmentation channel can be studied separately by implementing a coincidence three-dimensional (3D) momentum imaging method. The work presented in this master's report can be separated into two parts. First, the interaction between molecular ion beams and femtosecond laser pulses, in particular, the dissociation of CO into C+O, is studied. For that purpose, measurements are conducted at different laser intensities and wavelengths to investigate the possible pathways of dissociation into C+O. The study reveals that CO+ starts to dissociate from the quartet electronic state at low laser intensities. Higher laser intensity measurements, in which a larger number of photons can be absorbed by the molecule, show that the doublet electronic states with deeper potential wells, e.g. A2[pi], contribute to the dissociation of the molecule. In addition, the three-body fragmentation of CO2+ into C++O++O+ is studied, and two breakup scenarios are separated using the angle between the sum and difference of the momentum vectors of two O+ fragments. In the second part, improvements in experimental techniques are discussed. Development of a reflective telescope setup intended to increase the conversion efficiency of ultraviolet (UV) laser pulse generation is described, and the setup is used in the studies of CO+ dissociation described in this report. The other technical study presented here is the measurement of the position dependence of timing signals picked off of a microchannel plate (MCP) surface. The experimental method is presented and significant time spread over the surface of the MCP detector is reported [1].
