Southwest Border Counter-Narcotics Strategy (2007) focused primarily on what the entities of the U.S. Fed. Gov¿t. could do to prevent the illegal trafficking of drugs across the border with Mexico. As the cartels battle the Mexican Gov¿t. and one another, we have seen significant disruptions in the availability of such drugs as cocaine and meth in U.S. markets. The new Strategy recognizes the role that the outbound flow of illegal cash and weapons plays in sustaining the cartels and addresses this threat. Contents: Intelligence and Info. Book excerpt: Signed in 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war between the United States and Mexico and gave a large portion of Mexico’s northern territories to the United States. The language of the treaty was designed to deal fairly with the people who became residents of the United States by default. However, as Richard Griswold del Castillo points out, articles calling for equality and protection of civil and property rights were either ignored or interpreted to favor those involved in the westward expansion of the United States rather than the Mexicans and Indians living in the conquered territories.

Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and Mexico share a history shaped in the 19th century by numerous US forces interventions into Mexican territory and US expropriation of considerable swaths of Mexican territory. However, in spite of structural impediments and a history of resentment by Mexico of US intervention into its affairs and territory, the levels of cooperation and understanding slowly began to improve following a series of international and domestic factors. The decline of the former Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall at a global level, coupled with major political and economic challenges and reforms within Mexico are a starting point from which to assess the evolution of the bilateral defense relationship between the United States and Mexico. The American and Mexican militaries have evolved differently over the past 100 years and they each have very different responsibilities, mission sets, orientations, and capabilities. Yet in recent years, the Mexican armed forces have cooperated more closely with their US counterparts. This may be due to explicit direction coming from senior levels of the Mexican government and to operational requirements of the armed forces themselves as they seek to increase their capability and capacity to confront the growing levels in drug trafficking related violence. Today, both countries are dealing with the effects of this increased violence and insecurity in Mexico. Relying primarily on one-on-one interviews with senior practitioners and analysts on both sides of the border, the text examines the evolution of the U.S.-Mexican bilateral defense relationship to better understand how and why this unique relationship has improved, in fits and starts, over the past 25 years. It offers a new understanding of how defense policymakers from each respective country perceive the other, as well as how the lack of trust and understanding between the two neighbors has delayed greater cooperation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering more than one hundred years of American history, Walls and Mirrors examines the ways that continuous immigration from Mexico transformed—and continues to shape—the political, social, and cultural life of the American Southwest. Taking a fresh approach to one of the most divisive political issues of our time, David Gutiérrez explores the ways that nearly a century of steady immigration from Mexico has shaped ethnic politics in California and Texas, the two largest U.S. border states. Drawing on an extensive body of primary and secondary sources, Gutiérrez focuses on the complex ways that their pattern of immigration influenced Mexican Americans' sense of social and cultural identity—and, as a consequence, their politics. He challenges the most cherished American myths about U.S. immigration policy, pointing out that, contrary to rhetoric about "alien invasions," U.S. government and regional business interests have actively recruited Mexican and other foreign workers for over a century, thus helping to establish and perpetuate the flow of immigrants into the United States. In addition, Gutiérrez offers a new interpretation of the debate over assimilation and multiculturalism in American society. Rejecting the notion of the melting pot, he explores the ways that ethnic Mexicans have resisted assimilation and fought to create a cultural space for themselves in distinctive ethnic communities throughout the southwestern United States.

Book excerpt: The politics of immigration and migration control has taken on new urgency in the post-9/11 world as sovereignty concerns clash with industrialized democracies' continuing need for immigrants to fill jobs and sustain social security reserves. Rosenblum analyzes U.S. immigration policy over the last 25 years, conceptualizing it as a two-stage, two-level game - thereby avoiding the failures of past approaches that looked, respectively, at only one of two key factors in this issue area: either at competition among domestic groups or at the international aspects of migration. By developing a more complex model, Rosenblum has been able to tease out the interaction between the domestic and international politics of migration. His analysis is based on 120 interviews with elites in the United States, Mexico, and Central America. Rosenblum concludes by considering the implications of his transnational model for migration policymaking after September 11.

Book excerpt: "A fascinating, easy read. At the very least, you will re-think your eating habits. Most likely, your relationship with food and food sources will be transformed." ★★★★★ Society suggests that to live right, we need to go to school, get a good job and earn lots of money, buy a nice big house and plenty of 'stuff', work until retirement and then...I suppose die. What nonsense. The idea of escaping this work-consume-die cycle resonates with many who are aware of it. However, the question of how to actually escape from that cycle is where it gets a bit murky. The escape from this endless and unsatisfying cycle all starts with addressing consumerism, as it is excessive consumption that drives most of us to work. This same consumption also underpins much of our own and the planet's physical ailments. By creating conscious consumption habits, we can lighten the load on the planet and our bodies at the same time as liberating financial resources so that we can head towards a better work-life balance. And maybe towards no work at all! The consumable that is the most beneficial to address at the individual level is food. It will have the most immediate impact on your budget, your belly and your brain. The Consumption Cleanse is a no-nonsense, research-referenced and achievable roadmap to the mindful consumption of food and beverages. The author has peeled back the marketing spin and corporate hogwash that is wrapped around many of our common foods to reveal the truth about what we eat. Together with these researched truths, the cleanse comprises the results of his self-experimentation, extraction plans and food-replacement suggestions in relation to 13 of our most commonly consumed food categories. "If there's anyone out there still eating white sugar, deep-fried foods or processed foods (and apparently, according to the author's research, there are plenty of you out there), and you're interested in living a long, healthy life, READ THIS BOOK! It's easy to read in spite of the deep research Mr. Blue has done and reported on here. Be forewarned - once you read it, you can choose to keep eating all those things but you'll do so knowing exactly how much unnecessary damage you're doing to your body and the world's environment." ★★★★★ "In a very entertaining but informed manner Mike offers a 13 week Food Consumption Cleanse: Week 1 - Refined Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners, Week 2 -Beer, Week 3 - Confectionery, Week 4 - Soda and Bottled Drinks, Week 5 - Coffee, Week 6- Land-Based Animals, Week 7 - Wheat, Week 8 - Deep Fried, Week 9 - GMOs, Week 10 - Dairy, Week 11 - Seafood, Week 12 - Food Additives, and finally Week 13 - Less Is More." ★★★★★ "This is an easy format to follow; the information is provided in easily digestible bits so as not to overwhelm making it easy to follow; and the way he breaks out the different habits makes it easy to pick and choose which ones you want to break, in what order, or heck, all of them. Did I mention that he makes it easy?" ★★★★★ The Consumption Cleanse will enable you to take your first steps off the life-destroying consumer hamster wheel.
