Book excerpt: SOLVING PSYCHIATRIC PUZZLES Please visit this this book’s official website at www.solvingpsychiatricpuzzles.com for more information. Despite revolutionary advances in the field of diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, psychiatry is still shrouded in mystery and those facing mental illness are often stigmatized. What does a psychiatrist do? How are mental illnesses diagnosed and treated? Does mental illness run in families? Do people with mental illness function normally? SOLVING PSYCHIATRIC PUZZLES gives readers an unprecedented look into the entire experience of mental illness – from patient to doctor, from diagnosis to treatment. In this book, Dr. Sethi describes stories of 28 patients with mental disorders, in their own words, and from the hospital and office notes. These stories are universal, and they resonate with patients from all races, classes, genders and socio-economic backgrounds throughout the world. There are no uniform standards for the treatment of mental illness in the United States or abroad. Dr. Sethi presents a model for successful treatment based on the art of empathic listening. The art of listening is the primary tool a psychiatrist has to diagnose and treat mental illness with the help of increasingly complex spectrum of old and new psychiatric medications. Dr. Sethi also describes common psychiatric disorders and psychiatric medications, as well as evolution of history of psychiatry in the United States. Dr. Sethi then invites readers into psychiatric sessions, first hearing patients, then explaining the hospital and office notes taken during sessions so as to educate patients about their diagnosis and rationale for treatment. SOLVING PSYCHIATRIC PUZZLES enables us to better understand mental illness through lucid and powerful descriptions from the perspectives of both patients and clinicians. It reminds us that, despite the lingering stigma of mental illness, 90 percent of all mental illness is treatable like any other physical illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the U.S. approximately one percent of the population (2.6 million) have a bipolar disorder -- also called manic-depressive illness -- characterized by mood cycles of depression and mania (excessive elation, activity, talkativeness, etc.). Because bipolar illness has genetic tendencies, it affects those from all walks of life, but the majority of persons with the illness don't seek help. Most have been misunderstood, rejected, shunned, and disliked because of the disorder, and they struggle against preconceived ideas and prejudices -- but all seek answers, health, freedom, hope, and love. For someone with bipolar disorder, education and knowledge about the illness are necessary for successful treatment. Until now, few road maps have been available. In this book, the pieces that compose the bipolar puzzle come together in a unique question-and-answer format. Written by a bipolar sufferer, co-author Bryan L. Court, typical questions heard in bipolar support groups are provided and each is followed by an in-depth answer. Each topical section also includes an extensive Psychiatrist's Response by co-author Gerald E. Nelson, M.D., who has been working with bipolar disordered individuals for over 20 years. Covering the whole person -- physical, emotional, and spiritual components of recovery -- this book is essential for individuals suffering from bipolar disorder, as well as their loved ones and helping professionals. Answering questions about bipolar illness and how to live with it, this book addresses 187 recovery-related questions over the broad range of interest to the patient, family, and friend, and utilizes the same question-and-answer format heard in bipolar support groups. Subjects cover a wide spectrum, including: understanding the illness; treatment methods; medications; attitudes; acceptance; faith; living problems; relationships with friends, family, and psychiatrists; support groups; disability; hospitalization; and employment difficulties. The answers were obtained from a psychiatrist, a labor law attorney, and a hospital worker. A psychiatrist (Nelson) reviewed the answers to the questions and provided a response to each section of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Anthropology of Puzzles argues that the human brain is a "puzzling organ" which allows humans to literally solve their own problems of existence through puzzle format. Noting the presence of puzzles everywhere in everyday life, Marcel Danesi looks at puzzles in society since the dawn of history, showing how their presence has guided large sections of human history, from discoveries in mathematics to disquisitions in philosophy. Danesi examines the cognitive processes that are involved in puzzle making and solving, and connects them to the actual physical manifestations of classic puzzles. Building on a concept of puzzles as based on Jungian archetypes, such as the river crossing image, the path metaphor, and the journey, Danesi suggests this could be one way to understand the public fascination with puzzles. As well as drawing on underlying mental archetypes, the act of solving puzzles also provides an outlet to move beyond biological evolution, and Danesi shows that puzzles could be the product of the same basic neural mechanism that produces language and culture. Finally, Danesi explores how understanding puzzles can be a new way of understanding our human culture.

Book excerpt: The metaphor of the monster or predator—usually a sexual predator, drug dealer in areas frequented by children, or psychopathic murderer—is a powerful framing device in public discourse about how the criminal justice system should respond to serious violent crimes. The cultural history of the monster reveals significant features of the metaphor that raise questions about the extent to which justice can be achieved in both the punishment of what are regarded as "monstrous crimes" and the treatment of those who commit such crimes. This book is the first to address the connections between the history of the monster metaphor, the 19th century idea of the criminal as monster, and the 20th century conception of the psychopath: the new monster. The book addresses, in particular, the ways in which the metaphor is used to scapegoat certain categories of crimes and criminals for anxieties about our own potential for deviant, and, indeed, dangerous interests. These interests have long been found to be associated with the fascination people have for monsters in most cultures, including the West. The book outlines an alternative public health approach to sex offending, and crime in general, that can incorporate what we know about illness prevention while protecting the rights, and humanity, of offenders. The book concludes with an analysis of the role of forensic psychiatrists and psychologists in representing criminal defendants as psychopaths, or persons with certain personality disorders. As psychiatry and psychology have transformed bad behavior into mad behavior, these institutions have taken on the legal role of helping to sort out the most dangerous among us for preventive "treatment" rather than carceral "punishment."

Book excerpt: Receiving a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, or some other brain-related illness is devastating. It feels like life, as you know it, is over, and you are powerless to do anything about it. Your future may seem like nothing but a long black tunnel of decreasing cognitive function, declining mobility, depression, and premature death. Even your physician may share this gloomy view. The good news is, you have more control over your brain health than you think! With the exception of cancer, many brain illnesses can be reversed through a combination of diet, exercise, supplements, proper sleep, avoiding and removing toxins from the body, and taking an epigenetic (turning good genes on and not-so-good genes off) approach to your healing. Several “jump start” techniques, including oxygen therapy, microbiota therapy (Gut Flora Transplant or GFT), photobiomodulation therapy (PMT), venous angioplasty, and even cannabis can enhance your recovery in as little as a few weeks. Never before have we had so many safe approaches with little or no side effects. Best of all, these treatments are now available on almost every continent, including Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. It is time we let go of our paternalistic concept that “doctor knows best.” This book describes all the above treatments and more, providing a roadmap to enhance your brain recovery. You may not feel like it right now, but you can win the brain game, and this book can show you how!

Book excerpt: Man has long searched for the cause and meaning of mental illness. This book, which is a combination of the author's earlier books (Volumes One and Two) continues in his attempt to answer those questions. The author/compiler has spent 47 years investigating these problems and his conclusion is that severe unconscious bisexual conflict and confusion lie at the root of all mental illness, as difficult to comprehend as this idea may be. The book itself consists of 790 quotations, from a variety of sources, all of which point to the unshakable truth of this hypothesis. This is a fixed law of nature, unassailable and constantly operative in every case. No other species but man is afflicted with mental illness because no other species has either the intellectual power to repress their sexual feelings nor the motivation to do so. The disease we call "schizophrenia" is but an arbitrary name, which is used to designate the end-stage of a process beginning with a slight neurosis. The more severe the bisexual conflict and confusion in the individual, the more severe the degree of the mental illness which is experienced. Several other investigators in the past have reached this same conclusion, but unfortunately their wisdom went largely unheeded. Hopefully this book will remedy that ill-advised neglect.
