Book excerpt: Fundamental studies on oxide catalysts have been conducted with emphasis on the investigation of the properties of anion and cation vacancies on an oxide surface, on the characterization of an adsorbed oxygen species on an oxide, and on the determination of surface cation densities in solid oxide solutions. An automically well ordered surface of ZnO has been successfully prepared on which a high density of sites resembling those of the anion vacancy is present. Such a surface adsorbs oxygen and methanol more strongly, yet carbon dioxide more weakly than a stoichiometric nonpolar surface. From the kinetics of adsorption and desorption, evidence of an atomic adsorption of oxygen on iron oxide has been observed. The adsorption of this species is activated, and its desorption follows a bimolecular rate law. Attempts are being made to obtain the activation energies of adsorption and desorption, and the saturation coverage of the species. Its reaction with hydrocarbons will be studied later. The surface cation densities of Fe and Cr on a series of solid solutions of Fe2O3-Cr2O3 were determined. It was found that Fe was enriched on the surface at low Fe contents, but depleted from the surface at high Fe contents. The surface Cr on air treated samples is Cr(VI). Calculation on the surface cation densities of oxide solid solutions of cubic structure was performed using a pairwise potential, and a statistical model for the surface layer. For dilute bulk solutions, the larger cation is found to be enriched on the surface.

Book excerpt: Effort has been concentrated in two directions: to elucidate the relationship between surface structure and surface chemical properties, and to investigate the effect of crystallite size. Briefly, by comparing the decomposition reactions of methanol, formaldehyde, and formic acid on the nonpolar and the Zn-polar surfaces of ZnO, it was found that the Zn-polar surface was more metallic-like than the nonpolar surface. On the nonpolar surface, defects always make the surface more reactive. In the study of the crystallite size effect, it was found that the selectivity for butadiene production in the oxidative dehydrogenation of butene on iron oxide increases with decreasing crystallite size, ranging from about 40% for very large crystallites to about 80% for very small crystallites. The nonequilibrium thermodynamics of methanol synthesis from syn-gas was studied.

Book excerpt: The properties of oxide catalysts that determine selectivity in oxidation of alkanes were investigated. Upon examining the product distribution in the oxidation of ethane, propane, butane, pentane, and cyclohexane over Mg orthovanadate, Mg pyrovanadate, and vanadyl pyrophosphate, it was found that whether dehydrogenation, formation of oxygen-containing organic products, or combustion was the predominant reaction depended on the catalyst and alkane. The product distribution could be explained by considering whether the active sites contained easily removable lattice oxygen ions, and whether the size of the alkane molecule was sufficiently large to be bonded to two adjacent vanadium ions in the active site to enhance the probability of reaction between the adsorbed hydrocarbon intermediate and reactive lattice oxygen. Selectivity for oxidative dehydrogenation of butane on silica-supported vanadium oxide depended on the vanadia loading. The selectivity was much higher on a 1 wt.% than on a 10 Wt-% V[sub 2]O[sub 5]/SiO[sub 2] sample. It was also found that on the 10 wt.% sample, agglomeration of vanadia into V[sub 2]O[sub 5] crystallites occurred during reaction. Results suggested that isolated VO[sub 4] units were more selective for dehydrogenation of butane, consistent with the idea that the selectivity depended on the availability of reactive oxygen in the active site.
