Book excerpt: The definitive history of the Vikings -- from arts and culture to politics and cosmology -- by a distinguished archaeologist with decades of expertise The Viking Age -- from 750 to 1050 -- saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture. Based on the latest archaeological and textual evidence, Children of Ash and Elm tells the story of the Vikings on their own terms: their politics, their cosmology and religion, their material world. Known today for a stereotype of maritime violence, the Vikings exported new ideas, technologies, beliefs, and practices to the lands they discovered and the peoples they encountered, and in the process were themselves changed. From Eirík Bloodaxe, who fought his way to a kingdom, to Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir, the most traveled woman in the world, Children of Ash and Elm is the definitive history of the Vikings and their time.

Even though she's excited to be out of bondage, there's still the matter of being taken captive by the Norsemen. She knows that if she is impregnated by a Viking, by law the Vikings can't keep her captive in wartime, and she thinks of a crazy but effective plan. Knowing the men won't be able to resist after a year of fighting, she leaves herself exposed, and soon finds herself in the dominant possession of a rugged man who wants everything she has to give him. This is an explicit viking erotic romance with themes of breeding and domination.

For every heroic vice, the Vikings laid upon the opposite scale an heroic virtue. They plundered and robbed, as most men did in the times when Might made Right. Yet the heaven-sent instinct of hospitality was in the marrow of their bones. No beggar went from their doors without alms; no traveller asked in vain for shelter. As cunningly false as they were to their foes, just so superbly true were they to their friends. Above all, they were a race of conquerors, whose knee bent only to its proved superior. Their allegiance was not given to the man who was king-born, but to the man who showed himself their leader in courage and their master in skill. Leif Ericsson, also known as "Leif the Lucky," was the second son of Erik the Red and certainly displayed the Viking spirit of adventure and exploration.

Book excerpt: Leif Ericsson, also known as 'Leif the Lucky', was the second son of Erik the Red and certainly displayed the Viking spirit of adventure and exploration. As a young man Leif Ericsson visited Norway, where he converted to Christianity. He was charged with returning to Greenland to convert the populace, but instead sailed further west and is believed to have landed somewhere in Nova Scotia. He spent a year in North America before returning home to Greenland, where he served as governor. The film The Viking (1928) was based on this novel, which has, to some extent, been based on Viking history. Ottilie A. Liljencrantz, born in Chicago in 1876, is best remembered for her historical Viking romances. Her first work was a juvenile book entitled The Scrape that Jack Built, but the circumstance that undoubtedly decided her future was the purchase of Du Chaillu's Viking Age, which intensely fascinated her. Frithiof's Saga and Andersen's Norse Mythology further aroused her to the possibilities of a field at once inestimably rich and comparatively untold. These studies resulted in The Thrall of Leif, the Lucky. This glowing tale is centered in the career of Leif Ericson, the Norse Viking, who in the year 1000 sailed from Greenland and, landing in the present state of Rhode Island, was the discoverer of the American continent.
