Book excerpt: A collective engages and mirrors the critical need for energy justice and transformation Solarities considers the possibilities of organizing societies and economies around solar energy, and the challenges of a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels. Far from presenting solarity as a utopian solution to the climate crisis, it critically examines the ambiguous potentials of solarities: plural, situated, and often contradictory. Here, a diverse collective of activists, scholars, and practitioners critically engage a wide range of relationships and orientations to the sun. They consider the material and infrastructural dimensions of solar power, the decolonial and feminist promises of decentralized energy, solarian relations with more-than-human kin, and the problem of oppressive and weaponized solarities. Solarities imagines—and demands— possibilities for energy justice in this transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a comprehensive introduction to the classical geometric approximation theory, emphasizing important themes related to the theory including uniqueness, stability, and existence of elements of best approximation. It presents a number of fundamental results for both these and related problems, many of which appear for the first time in monograph form. The text also discusses the interrelations between main objects of geometric approximation theory, formulating a number of auxiliary problems for demonstration. Central ideas include the problems of existence and uniqueness of elements of best approximations as well as properties of sets including subspaces of polynomials and splines, classes of rational functions, and abstract subsets of normed linear spaces. The book begins with a brief introduction to geometric approximation theory, progressing through fundamental classical ideas and results as a basis for various approximation sets, suns, and Chebyshev systems. It concludes with a review of approximation by abstract sets and related problems, presenting novel results throughout the section. This text is suitable for both theoretical and applied viewpoints and especially researchers interested in advanced aspects of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected speeches from Indigenous leaders around the world--necessary wisdom for our times, nourishment for our collective, and a path away from extinction toward a sustainable, interconnected future. Indigenous worldviews, and the knowledge they confer, are critical for human survival and the wellbeing of future generations. Editors Wahinkpe Topa (Four Arrows) and Darcia Narvaez present 28 powerful excerpted passages from Indigenous leaders, including Mourning Dove, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Winona LaDuke, and Xiuhtezcatl Martinez. Accompanied by the editors’ own analyses, each chapter reflects the wisdom of Indigenous worldview precepts like: Egalitarian rule versus hierarchical governance A fearless trust in the universe, instead of a fear-based culture The life-sustaining role of ceremony Emphasizing generosity and the greater good instead of pursuing selfish goals and for personal gain The laws of nature as the highest rules for living The editors emphasize our deep need to move away from the dominant Western paradigm--one that dictates we live without strong social purpose, fails to honor the earth as sacred, leads with the head while ignoring the heart, and places individual “rights” over collective responsibility. Restoring the Kinship Worldview is rooted in an Indigenous vision and strong social purpose that sees all life forms as sacred and sentient--that honors the wisdom of the heart, and grants equal standing to rights and responsibilities. All author proceeds from Restoring the Kinship Worldview are donated to Indigenous non-profit organizations working on behalf of Indigenous Peoples. Inviting readers into a world-sense that expands beyond perceiving and conceiving to experiencing and being, Restoring the Kinship Worldview is a salve for our times, a nourishment for our collective, and a holistic orientation that will lead us away from extinction toward an integrated, sustainable future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to scholars of the nonhuman turn, the scandal of theory lies in its failure to decenter the human. The real scandal, however, is that we keep trying. The human has become a conspicuous blind spot for many theorists seeking to extend hospitality to animals, plants, and even insentient things. The displacement of the human is essential and urgent, yet given the humanist presumption that animals lack a number of allegedly unique human capacities, such as language, reason, and awareness of mortality, we ought to remain cautious about laying claim to any power to eradicate anthropocentrism altogether. Such a power risks becoming yet another self-accredited capacity thanks to which the human reaffirms its sovereignty through its supposed erasure. Monkey Trouble argues that the turn toward immanence in contemporary posthumanism promotes a cosmocracy that absolves one from engaging in those discriminatory decisions that condition hospitality as such. Engaging with recent theoretical developments in speculative realism and object-oriented ontology, as well as ape and parrot language studies, the book offers close readings of literary works by J.M. Coetzee, Charles Chesnutt, and Walt Whitman and films by Alfonso Cuarón and Lars von Trier. Anthropocentrism, Peterson argues, cannot be displaced through a logic of reversal that elevates immanence above transcendence, horizontality over verticality. This decentering must cultivate instead a human/nonhuman relationality that affirms the immanent transcendency spawned by our phantasmatic humanness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of approximation theory has become so vast that it intersects with every other branch of analysis and plays an increasingly important role in applications in the applied sciences and engineering. Fundamentals of Approximation Theory presents a systematic, in-depth treatment of some basic topics in approximation theory designed to emphasize the rich connections of the subject with other areas of study. With an approach that moves smoothly from the very concrete to more and more abstract levels, this text provides an outstanding blend of classical and abstract topics. The first five chapters present the core of information that readers need to begin research in this domain. The final three chapters the authors devote to special topics-splined functions, orthogonal polynomials, and best approximation in normed linear spaces- that illustrate how the core material applies in other contexts and expose readers to the use of complex analytic methods in approximation theory. Each chapter contains problems of varying difficulty, including some drawn from contemporary research. Perfect for an introductory graduate-level class, Fundamentals of Approximation Theory also contains enough advanced material to serve more specialized courses at the doctoral level and to interest scientists and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The refurbishment of existing buildings is a neglected subject within sustainable architecture; attention is usually focused on new buildings. Old buildings can use large amounts of energy and provide poor internal conditions for occupants. They may have high heating demand, poor lighting, poor ventilation, solar penetration and glare, and poor control of heating and cooling. Demolition is an option but the alternative of refurbishment is starting to be seen as more sustainable in terms of architectural value, materials use, neighborhood disruption and waste disposal. Building new is more carbon intensive and carries many wider environmental impacts. In addition, the potential impact of low energy refurbishment is much greater than that for new build since there are many more existing buildings than will be built in the next 10 - 20 years, the period over which many CO2 emission targets apply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In influx & efflux Jane Bennett pursues a question that was bracketed in her book Vibrant Matter: how to think about human agency in a world teeming with powerful nonhuman influences? “Influx & efflux”—a phrase borrowed from Whitman's "Song of Myself"—refers to everyday movements whereby outside influences enter bodies, infuse and confuse their organization, and then exit, themselves having been transformed into something new. How to describe the human efforts involved in that process? What kinds of “I” and “we” can live well and act effectively in a world of so many other lively materialities? Drawing upon Whitman, Thoreau, Caillois, Whitehead, and other poetic writers, Bennett links a nonanthropocentric model of self to a radically egalitarian pluralism and also to a syntax and style of writing appropriate to the entangled world in which we live. The book tries to enact the uncanny process by which we “write up” influences that pervade, enable, and disrupt us.

In the first part, race is presented as a revolutionary idea. The three degrees of race are defined in the second part and elaborated upon in the third part. The fourth part begins with a clear definition of the term "Aryan" and ends with considerations on the racial issue from the point of view of law. Finally, the problem of racial rectification is discussed thoroughly.
