Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils of Southern New Jersey and Their Uses The general surface features of southern New Jersey may be described as those of a gently sloping plain of low relief which is marked by a ridge extending from the Atlantic coast line near Sandy Hook to the vicinity of Delaware Bay, near Bridgeton, N. J. (see fig. 3, p. From this ridge the land surface slopes unequally toward the southeast and toward the northwest. The former slope frequently is at the rate of less than 5 feet to the mile, but the latter usually is greater and frequently is accomplished by steeper slopes intervening between areas which are gently sloping or nearly level. It is estimated by the New Jersey Geological Survey that less than 15 square miles of the section rise above an altitude of 200 feet and that not more than 120 square miles rise above 100 feet in elevation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use, Vol. 11: The Knox Silt Loam The Knox silt loam is extensively developed from Indiana west ward to Nebraska and from the Ohio River north to southern Wis consin. It is the most extensive of the forested, silty soils derived from the loess. In many areas the surface of the Knox silt loam is hilly to steep, and such areas remain in forest to be used for woodlot or pasturage purposes. In other areas the surface is undulating to rolling, and power machinery may be used over the entire area of the type. The surface drainage of the type is' generally adequate, although local areas require the assistance Of tile underdrainage to improve subsoil drainage conditions. The Knox silt loam is not infrequently somewhat deficient in organic matter and the increase of the yields of the general crops produced upon it is largely dependent upon the restoration Of organic matter to this soil. The Knox silt loam is a subordinate soil for the production of corn in the majority of areas where it is tilled, although fair average yields are secured by the best farmers. It is one of the principal winter wheat soils of southern Indiana and adjoining territory, the yields ranging from 10 to 18 bushels per acre and averaging 11 to 12 bushels over considerable areas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use-VIII: The Clarksville Silt Loam The fine silty texture of the surface soil and the stiff and compact nature of the subsoil render the Clarksville silt loam better suited to the production of small grains and grass than to the production of staple crops, with few exceptions. Corn, wheat, oats, and grass are raised at all altitudes over portions of the type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It lies at varying altitudes from sea level up to 150 or 200 feet above tide, but the greater part of the type is probably found between altitudes of 50 and 150 feet. The surface of the Norfolk sandy loam is nearly level, undulating or gently rolling, and there are no steep Slopes or marked differences of elevation within the different areas of the type. The surface soil of the Norfolk sandy loam is a gray or a pale yellow medium sand, having a depth of about 12 inches. This is underlain to a depth of nearly 2 feet by a loamy sand or sandy loam of a yellow color which grades downward into a friable yellow sandy clay. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils and Their Properties The recognition of the work done by micro-organisms marks a most important advance in our knowledge of the phenomena involved in the metabolism (gr. Metabole, change) of the' soil. Hitherto, investigation has been directed rather to the determination of the immediate effects of soil metabolism in pro'moting the nutrition of plants. But it is at least possible that the biological fac tors in metabolic activity may eventually be proved to be not less potent than the physical and chemical agents in effecting the disintegration of rocks, and thus in restoring to the soil those mineral ingredients which are undergoing incessant loss. Our knowledge of the biology of the soil is hardly yet in a sufficiently settled condition to be made the subject of an elementary manual. All that is attempted, there fore, In 'the following pages is to trace soils back to their parent rocks, to indicate some of their more important physical and chemical properties, and to give a brief account of the distribution Of soils within the British Isles. It is proposed to follow this Volume with another, in the same series, upon the practical management of the soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use XII: The Carrington Loam Carrington loam is developed, agriculture is just passing through its pioneer stages, crop rotation is not generally practiced, the feeding of live stock is subordinate to grain production, and practically no stable manure is saved or applied to the land. As a result there has been some decrease in the app yields of the type during the past 15 or 20 years, and the farmers in these regions are becoming convinced of the necessity for crop rotation, the introduction of animal husbandry, and the application of manures in order that the original efficiency of the type may be restored, maintained, or even increased.
