Book excerpt: Long-term fertilizer experiment (LTFE) is in progress since 1972 in field No. 36 of Eastern Block Farm at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore with a cropping sequence of finger millet - maize. In order to evaluate the long-term effects of different fertilizer schedules adopted over the years in the LTFE on the soil properties, fertility status, enzymes activity, microbial population and biomass production, studies were undertaken in monsoon fallow followed by 97th crop of hybrid maize. There were ten treatments each replicated four times in randomized block design. The results revealed that there was no significant change in pH and EC due to the different fertilizer schedules adopted over years. Significant positive correlation was observed between the yield, uptake of nutrients by the crop and soil fertility status. The nutrient use efficiency was higher for K (40.0-205.7) followed by N (8.7-41.5) and P (3.6-17.4). High K efficiencies may be due to the luxury consumption of K by the crop in K rich experimental soil.

The N, P and K contents in the finger millet grain and straw and the total uptake of these nutrients by the finger millet crop were significantly higher in 100 per cent NPK + FYM treatment. There was a build up in the soil P status over the years through P fertilization and much of the applied P get fixed when it is supplied through super optimal level of fertilization.

Book excerpt: Microbial enzyme activities are the direct agents of organic matter decomposition, and thus play a crucial role in global C (C) cycling. Global change factors like anthropogenic nutrient inputs and warming have the potential to alter the activities of these enzymes, with background site conditions likely driving responses. We hypothesized that enzyme activities in sites with high background soil nutrient and/or C availability would be less sensitive to nutrient additions than nutrient-poor sites. We also hypothesized that sites poor in nutrients and/or C would show greater sensitivity to changes in temperature. To test our hypotheses we used long- and short-term nutrient additions combined with laboratory temperature incubations to assess changes in enzyme activities for 8 common soil enzymes that acquire nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and C from organic matter. We collected mineral soils (0-10 cm depth) from 8 Hawaiian sites that provided maximum variation in nutrient availability and background soil C. Soils were sieved, pooled by site, and homogenized prior to a laboratory addition of a simple C (sucrose), N, and/or P in full factorial design. The 8 soils also were incubated at 7 temperatures from 4 - 40 ðC. We found that the laboratory fertilizations altered enzyme activities, and that temperature sensitivities varied significantly among sites. Book excerpt: The impacts of crop rotations and N fertilization on the activities of 12 enzymes involved in C, N, and P cycling was studied in soils of two long-term cropping systems at the Northeast Research Center(NERC) in Nashua and the Clarion-Webster Research Center (CWRC) in Kanawha, established 1979 and 1954, respectively, in Iowa. The activities of glycosidases ([alpha]- and [beta]-glucosidases, [alpha]- and [beta]-galactosidases), amidohydrolases (amidase, arylamidase, L-glutaminase, L-asparaginase, L-aspartase), and phosphatases (acid and alkaline phosphatases, and phosphodiesterase) were assayed in soils sampled in 1996 and 1997 from four replicated cropping systems taken in corn, soybean, oats, or meadow (alfalfa) that received 0 or 180 kg N ha−1 before corn. Crop rotations significantly affected enzymes activities in soils at the NERC site in both years, and glycosidases only in soils at the CWRC site. The effect of N fertilization was inconsistent. Greatest activity values were in multicropping systems in meadow or oats, and the least in continuous corn or soybean systems. Enzyme activities were significantly correlated with C[Subscript mic], and arylamidase and amidohydrolases significantly correlated with N[Subscript mic], in both years and sites. The amounts of N mineralized during 24 weeks of incubation at 30°C were significantly correlated with the activities of arylamidase and amidohydrolases at both sites. The activity of arylamidase was also significantly correlated with amounts of N mineralized in soils from six regions of North Central U.S. An alkaline hydrolysis method for determining the total N potentially hydrolyzable in soils was evaluated. It involves determination of the NH4-N produced by direct steam distillation of 1 g field-moist soil and 1M KOH, NaOH, or LiOH or with PO4-B3O-- buffer (pH 11.8) successively every 5 min for 40 min. Calculated total hydrolysable N (N[Subscript max] or N[Subscript o]) values differed among soils, ranging from 401 to 1667 mg kg−1 soil and accounted for 12-56% of organic N in the soils. The N[Subscript max] or N[Subscript o] values obtained with KOH or NaOH were significantly correlated with the values obtained by using selected N mineralization indexes, and with the activities of amidohydrolases and arylamidase in the soils.

Book excerpt: Soil is not only a fundamental source for all living organisms but also impacts non-living factors (water, air, minerals, etc.) making it an invaluable and finite resource. The importance of soil expands from agronomy through to industrialization, thus, it is crucial to understand the impact of human activity on soil quality. To address several global issues related to pollution, food security, and health, the United Nations promotes the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with targets to ‘save soil’ by minimizing nutrient loss and pollution load from the soil. Due to increasing anthropogenic pollution load, many soil pollution control measures are failing, therefore, new technologies and eco-friendly solutions are needed to balance and restore soil health. Soil-crop interactions are essential considering the crop yield and productivity under different soil statuses. These processes, including nutrient release or soi detoxification, are mediated by soil-inhabiting microbes. In fact, the intrinsic role of soil parameters, including the different classes of soil, control soil microbiota which in turn modulate soil nutrient contents and makes these bioavailable. Different crops, especially cereals, are constantly interacting with these soil microbes, thus the relationship between soil, crops, and microbes is complex.
