Book excerpt: "Available literature from the tropics reveal that soil compaction originating from mechanical land clearing, mechanized continuous cultivation and cropping compounded by high intensity tropical rainfall, genetically compacted soils and subsoil gravel horizons, does indeed occur; has detrimental effects on soil structure, crop growth and yield; and it can persist for a long time if no adequate steps are taken to minimize or ameliorate it. The no-tillage system with crop residue mulch is an effective soil compaction control practice, provided it can be adopted as a package of all cultural practices tha tmake it work. Other control measures as well as biological and mechanical means of alleviating soil compaction have been reviewed. A number of research priorities, to back up what has already been achieved in controlling and alleviating soil compaction in the tropics, have been pointed out."--Abstract, page II.
