Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sohrab and Rustum Matthew Arnold wrote at a time when English life and English thought were much in need of broadening their horizons and throwing off the shackles of a narrow provincialism. Life was characterized by a certain dryness both of intellect and emotion, which was especially shown in the religion and science of the period. The Oxford movement was in some sense a protest against this attitude of mind, and Arnold, although in a very different way, uttered as strong a plea for a richer and more wide reaching spiritual life. His mission to Englishmen was, as he explains in the preface to one of his volumes of essays, to help them conquer the hard unintelligence, which was just then their bane; to supple and reduce it by culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sohrab and Rustum: An Episode Opinions are divided as to the relative merits of the poetical and prose works of Matthew Arnold1 but there is a large and growing number who look back with regret upon the hour when he abandoned poetry for criticism, even though that gracious type of culture whose essence is light and sweetness gained thereby its first professed apostle. Book excerpt: The great Persian classic known as the Shahname, or Book of Kings, completed in the eleventh century A.D. by the poet Abol-Qasem Ferdowsi, describes the pre-Islamic history of Persia from mythological times down to the invasion of the armies of Islam in the mid-seventh century A.D. From this long saga, Jerome W. Clinton has translated into English blank verse the most famous episode, the tragic story of Sohrab and Rostam. In this new edition, Clinton has revised and corrected his translation to make it more fluent and idiomatic, capturing more closely the narrative power of the original poem. The Persian text appears on facing pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women's book clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developed by historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership. Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge of source-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviated from interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.

Book excerpt: The Greatest Classics for Children in One Volume is a treasure trove of literary diversity, showcasing an exceptional range of styles and themes from the fantastical voyages of Jules Verne to the whimsical realms of Lewis Carroll. This anthology unites the monumental works of storytelling that have shaped the contours of children's literature over centuries. Each piece, whether it be the adventures of Johanna Spyri's alpine landscapes or the morally charged narratives of Harriet Beecher Stowe, contributes to the fabric of this collection, highlighting the evolution of literary forms and the richness of imaginative storytelling. The anthology's breadth invites readers to explore the intersections of fantasy, morality, adventure, and wisdom across different cultural backgrounds and historical periods. The contributing authors and editors, from luminaries like Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde to the evocative tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, represent a wide spectrum of literary movements and cultural heritages. Their works collectively embody the spirit of their times, reflecting and influencing societal norms, educational values, and the child's place within both the literary and the larger world. This compilation captures the essence of age-old narrations while aligning with significant historical and cultural shifts, bringing to light how these narratives have served as both mirrors and molders of society. For anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the foundational stories of childhood literature, this volume offers an unparalleled opportunity. Not only does it encapsulate a wide range of human experiences and philosophies, but it also opens a dialogue between the enduring themes of the past and the inquisitive minds of the present. Readers are encouraged to delve into this collection, to uncover the layers of meaning within each story, and to appreciate the vast tapestry of voices that have contributed to the legacy of children's literature. This anthology is more than a reading experience—it is an educational journey through the heart of storytelling, inviting a new generation to discover these classics anew.
