Book Synopsis Privatization in Latin America by : Alberto Chong
Download or read book Privatization in Latin America written by Alberto Chong and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005-03-15 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privatization is under attack. Beginning in the 1980s, thousands of failing state-owned enterprises worldwide have been turned over to the private sector. But public opinion has turned against privatization. A large political backlash has been brewing for some time, infused by accusations of corruption, abuse of market power, and neglect of the poor. What is the real record of privatization and are the criticisms justified? 'Privatization in Latin America' evaluates the empirical evidence on privatization in a region that has witnessed an extensive decline in the state's share of production over the past 20 years. The book is a compilation of recent studies that provide a comprehensive analysis of the record of and accusations against privatization, with important recommendations for the future. Seven countries are investigated: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. This book will be vital to anyone interested in the privatization debate but especially to those involved in civil service reform, corporate governance, economic policy, finance, and anticorruption efforts. 'Privatization is important but controversial. While economists typically favor it, others are skeptical. This book provides strong scientific evidence that privatization has been beneficial for many Latin American countries, although some privatizations failed and some groups in society lost out. As usual, the devil is in the details: how privatization is carried out and what reforms accompany it are crucial to its success. The book is definitely an invaluable contribution to the privatization debate.' --Oliver Hart, Andrew E. Furer Professor of Economics, Harvard University

Book Synopsis Computers and the Environment: Understanding and Managing their Impacts by : R. Kuehr
Download or read book Computers and the Environment: Understanding and Managing their Impacts written by R. Kuehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal computers have made life convenient in many ways, but what about their impacts on the environment due to production, use and disposal? Manufacturing computers requires prodigious quantities of fossil fuels, toxic chemicals and water. Rapid improvements in performance mean we often buy a new machine every 1-3 years, which adds up to mountains of waste computers. How should societies respond to manage these environmental impacts? This volume addresses the environmental impacts and management of computers through a set of analyses on issues ranging from environmental assessment, technologies for recycling, consumer behaviour, strategies of computer manufacturing firms, and government policies. One conclusion is that extending the lifespan of computers (e.g. through reselling) is an environmentally and economically effective strategy that deserves more attention from governments, firms and the general public.
Book Synopsis CNC Programming Skills: Program Entry and Editing on Fanuc Machines by : S. K. Sinha
Download or read book CNC Programming Skills: Program Entry and Editing on Fanuc Machines written by S. K. Sinha and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know how to insert a part of a program into another program at the desired location? Background editing?? Using PCMCIA card??? Or, maybe, a simple task such as replacing G02 by G03 in the whole file???? When it comes to manual program entry on the machine, or searching / deleting / editing / copying / moving / inserting an existing program residing in the control memory or the PCMCIA card, most people resort to trial and error method. While they might be able to accomplish what they desire, the right approach would save a lot of their precious time. If this is exactly what you want, this book is for you. The information contained herein is concise, yet complete and exhaustive. The best part is that you can enjoy the convenience of having the wealth of useful information on editing techniques even on your smart phone which is always with you! You would often need to refer to it because it is not possible to memorize all the steps which are many a time too complex and devoid of common logic, so as to make the correct guess. The following excerpt from the book would give an idea of the methodical and step-by-step approach adopted in the book: Writing a file on the memory card: The following operation will save program number 1234 in the memory card, with the name TESTPRO: * Select the EDIT mode on the MOP panel. * Press the PROG key on the MDI panel. * Press the next menu soft key. * Press the soft key CARD. * Press the soft key OPRT. * Press the soft key PUNCH. * Type 1234 and press the soft key O SET. * Type TESTPROG and press the soft key F NAME. * Press the soft key EXEC. While the file is being copied on the memory card, the character string OUTPUT blinks at the lower right corner of the screen. Copying may take several seconds, depending on the size of the file being copied. If a file with file name TESTPROG already exists in the memory card, it may be overwritten unconditionally or a message confirming the overwriting may be displayed, depending on a parameter setting. In case of such a warning message, press the EXEC soft key to overwrite, and CAN soft key to cancel writing. However, system information such as PMC ladder is always overwritten unconditionally. The copied file is automatically assigned the highest existing file number plus one. The comment, if any, with the O-word (i.e., in the first block of the program) will be displayed in the COMMENT column of the card directory. To write all programs, type -9999 as the program number. In this case, if file name is not specified, all the programs are saved in file name PROGRAM.ALL on the memory card. A file name can have up to 8 characters, and an extension up to 3 characters (XXXXXXXX.XXX). Repeat the last three steps to copy more files. Finally, press the CAN soft key, to cancel the copying mode and go to the previous menu.

Book Synopsis Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics V by : Jose M. Diego
Download or read book Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics V written by Jose M. Diego and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-18 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy is a scienti?c discipline that has developed a rapid and impressive growth in Spain. Thirty years ago, Spain occupied a purely anecdotal presence in the international context, but today it occupies the eighth position in the world in publication of astronomical articles, and, among other successes, owns and op- ates ninety per cent of the world’s largest optical telescope GTC (Gran Telescopio Canarias). The Eighth Scienti?c Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (Sociedad Espanol ̃ a de Astronom ́ a, SEA), held in Santander in July 7–11 2008, whose p- ceedings are in your hands, clearly shows the enthusiasm, motivation and quality of the present Spanish astronomical community. The event brought together 322 participants, who represent almost 50% of Spanish professional astronomers. This percentage, together with the continuously increasing, with respect to previous SEA meetings, number of oral presentations and poster contributions (179 and 127 respectively), con?rms that the SEA conferences have become a point of reference to assess the interests and achievements of astrophysical research in Spain. The most important and current topics of modern Astrophysics were taken into accountat thepreliminarymeeting, aswell as the numberandqualityofparticipants and their contributions, to select the invited speakers and oral contributors. We took a week to enjoy the high quality contributions submitted by Spanish astronomers to the Scienti?c Organizing Committee. The selection was dif?cult. We wish to acknowledge the gentle advice and commitment of the SOC members.
Book Synopsis Advanced Design and Manufacturing Based on STEP by : Xun Xu
Download or read book Advanced Design and Manufacturing Based on STEP written by Xun Xu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and manufacturing is the essential element in any product development lifecycle. Industry vendors and users have been seeking a common language to be used for the entire product development lifecycle that can describe design, manufacturing and other data pertaining to the product. Many solutions were proposed, the most successful being the Stadndard for Exchange of Product model (STEP). STEP provides a mechanism that is capable of describing product data, independent from any particular system. The nature of this description makes it suitable not only for neutral file exchange, but also as a basis for implementing, sharing and archiving product databases. ISO 10303-AP203 is the first and perhaps the most successful AP developed to exchange design data between different CAD systems. Going from geometric data (as in AP203) to features (as in AP224) represents an important step towards having the right type of data in a STEP-based CAD/CAM system. Of particular significance is the publication of STEP-NC, as an extension of STEP to NC, utilising feature-based concepts for CNC machining purposes. The aim of this book is to provide a snapshot of the recent research outcomes and implementation cases in the field of design and manufacturing where STEP is used as the primary data representation protocol. The 20 chapters are contributed by authors from most of the top research teams in the world. These research teams are based in national research institutes, industries as well as universities.
