Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper defines a method for evaluating a contractor's ability to comply with both the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Process Maturity Model and the Ballistic Missile Defense's (BMD) Trusted Software Methodology (TSM). The SEI model is used to evaluate the maturity of a contractor's software development process. The TSM is used to evaluate the contractor's ability to prevent inadvertent and malicious errors from occurring in software products. The method described in this paper identifies the commonality and differences between these two models and the additional activities that must occur during an SEI Software Capability Evaluation (SCE) to accommodate the TSM criteria. This method was developed after receiving appropriate SCE and TSM training and performing numerous SCEs. It is intended to be used throughout the BMD program to help identify software development risks.

Book excerpt: A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities offers the most advanced approach to date, empirically validated at software development organizations. This handbook adds a valuable contribution to the much-needed literature on people-related aspects in software engineering. The primary focus is on the particular challenge of extending software process definitions to more explicitly address people-related considerations. The capability concept is not present nor has it been considered in most software process models. The authors have developed a capabilities-oriented software process model, which has been formalized in UML and implemented as a tool. A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities guides readers through the incorporation of the individual’s capabilities into the software process. Structured to meet the needs of research scientists and graduate-level students in computer science and engineering, this book is also suitable for practitioners in industry.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This report describes Version 1.5 of the Software Capability Evaluation (SCE) method, as taught at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) from January 1992 to June 1993. This version of the SCE Method is based on the process maturity framework defined in Characterizing the Software Process: A Maturity Framework [Humphrey 87a], which predates Version 1.0 of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) described in Capability Maturity Model for Software [Paulk 91]. The document includes a background overview of the SCE Method and its evolution, a detailed description of the activities performed during an SCE, and a discussion of the characteristics of the method and their implications for the use of the method. This 'as built' description provides a baseline for future evolution of the SCE method."

Weber, Bill Curtis, Mary Beth Chrissis "In every sense, the CMM represents the best thinking in the field today... this book is targeted at anyone involved in improving the software process, including members of assessment or evaluation teams, members of software engineering process groups, software managers, and software practitioners..." From the Foreword by Watts Humphrey The Capability Maturity Model for Software (CMM) is a framework that demonstrates the key elements of an effective software process. The CMM describes an evolutionary improvement path for software development from an ad hoc, immature process to a mature, disciplined process, in a path laid out in five levels. When using the CMM, software professionals in government and industry can develop and improve their ability to identify, adopt, and use sound management and technical practices for delivering quality software on schedule and at a reasonable cost. This book provides a description and technical overview of the CMM, along with guidelines for improving software process management overall. It is a sequel to Watts Humphrey's important work, Managing the Software Process, in that it structures the maturity framework presented in that book more formally. Features: Compares the CMM with ISO 9001 Provides an overview of ISO's SPICE project, which is developing international standards for software process improvement and capability determination Presents a case study of IBM Houston's Space Shuttle project, which is frequently referred to as being at Level 5 0201546647B04062001

This book presents an integrated technology, Design for Trustworthy Software (DFTS), to address software quality issues upstream such that the goal of software quality becomes that of preventing bugs in implementation rather than finding and eliminating them during and after implementation. The thrust of the technology is that major quality deployments take place before a single line of code is written! This customer-oriented integrated technology can help deliver breakthrough results in cost, quality, and delivery schedule thus meeting and exceeding customer expectations. The authors describe the principles behind the technology as well as their applications to actual software design problems. They present illustrative case studies covering various aspects of DFTS technology including CoSQ, AHP, TRIZ, FMEA, QFD, and Taguchi Methods and provide ample questions and exercises to test the readers understanding of the material in addition to detailed examples of the applications of the technology. The book can be used to impart organization-wide learning including training for DFTS Black Belts and Master Black Belts. It helps you gain rapid mastery, so you can deploy DFTS Technology quickly and successfully. Learn how to • Plan, build, maintain, and improve your trustworthy software development system • Adapt best practices of quality, leadership, learning, and management for the unique software development milieu • Listen to the customer’s voice, then guide user expectations to realizable, reliable software products • Refocus on customer-centered issues such as reliability, dependability, availability, and upgradeability • Encourage greater design creativity and innovation • Validate, verify, test, evaluate, integrate, and maintain software for trustworthiness • Analyze the financial impact of software quality • Prepare your leadership and infrastructure for DFTS Design for Trustworthy Software will help you improve quality whether you develop in-house, outsource, consult, or provide support. It offers breakthrough solutions for the entire spectrum of software and quality professionals—from developers to project leaders, chief software architects to customers. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) is the world's leading authority on quality which provides a community that advances learning, quality improvement, and knowledge exchange to improve business results, and to create better workplaces and communities worldwide. The Crosby Medal is presented to the individual who has authored a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, or techniques of quality management. Bijay K. Jayaswal, CEO of Agilenty Consulting Group, has held senior executive positions and consulted on quality and strategy for 25 years. His expertise includes value engineering, process improvement, and product development. He has directed MBA and Advanced Management programs, and helped to introduce enterprise-wide reengineering and Six Sigma initiatives. Dr. Peter C. Patton, Chairman of Agilenty Consulting Group, is Professor of Quantitative Methods and Computer Science at the University of St. Thomas. He served as CIO of the University of Pennsylvania and CTO at Lawson Software, and has been involved with software development since 1955.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the International Conference on Software Process (ICSP 2009) held in Vancouver, Canada, during May 16-17, 2009. ICSP 2009 was the third conference of the ICSP series, continuing the software process workshops from 25 years ago. The theme of ICSP 2009 was “Processes to Develop Trustworthy Software.” Software development takes place in a dynamic context of frequently changing technologies and limited resources. Teams worldwide are under increasing pressure to deliver trustworthy software products more quickly and with higher levels of quality. At the same time, global competition is forcing software development organizations to cut costs by rationalizing processes, outsourcing part or all of their activities, re- ing existing software in new or modified applications and evolving existing systems to meet new needs, while still minimizing the risk of projects failing to deliver. To address these difficulties, new or modified processes are emerging including lean and agile methods, plan-based product line development, and increased integration with systems engineering processes. Papers present research and real-world experience in many areas of software and systems processes impacting trustworthy software including: new software devel- ment approaches; software quality; integrating software and business processes; CMMI and other process improvement initiatives; simulation and modeling of so- ware processes; techniques for software process representation and analysis; and process tools and metrics.
