Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maitland Sutterfield is a San Francisco journalist who has just been through an exhausting divorce. He takes a writer's holiday, accepting an assignment as a reporter in Guatemala. In full flight from his personal demons, Sutterfield seeks peace in a beautiful land unlike his own - but this is Guatemala of the 1980s, and there is a brutal civil war underway. Instead of peace, Sutterfield finds the perils of love in a time of revolution, not to mention the moral quandaries of a country that is descending into madness. Maitland's main contact in Guatemala is Sofia Mendez, who takes him to a small Catholic mission in the highlands run by a Spanish-trained Jesuit priest. Maitland volunteers at the mission, convinced that the priest's ministry is a vivid example of the Liberation Theology movement about which he hopes to write the definitive book-length analysis. But complications abound when Sofia becomes Maitland's lover, before either he or Sofia have a chance to discuss the real nature of her previous vocation. Maitland is oppressively aware of the subtle but inevitable exploitation of third-world sources by first-world media, but the tables are turned as he finds himself trapped in a dangerous dilemma in which Sofia's needs dictate both their futures.

Jethro, an anthropology professor consumed with saving classic Cadillacs, and his rebellious sidekick, Marlon, meet ex-con Moses Grady living in a 1956 Sedan. Meanwhile Jethro's overworked sister, Delmar, across town, is throwing together a dinner party with her friend Hortense who is trying to lure her noncommital hungry bachelor lawyer boyfriend Stanley into marriage. Stanley, on the sly, suggests to Delmar that she become a surrogate mother for his boss for big bucks, then he'll be made partner. The characters at the table keep coming and going : Delmar's senile mother, who plays stride blues piano, her tempestuous son, a rich old man found at a supermarket and one elderly matron who drops dead after the second course. Enter Jethro to say the Mayan last rites before, “she is pumped with chemicals for marketing purposes.” The Hungry Bachelors Club may have food, sex, Indians, the Blues, and characters who are struggling to see the difference between substance and style, obligation and necessity, but most of all, tolerance, which prevails through affirming and loving relationships. The Hungry Bachelors Club was made into a feature film, released November, 1999, directed by Gregory Ruzzin, starring Bill Nunn as Moses Grady and Jorja Fox as Delmar.

Download or read book Remarkable Birds written by Mark Avery and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything you didn’t know about the avian world: a fascinating compendium showcasing the extraordinary wonders of birds, illuminated with exquisite ornithological illustrations, prints, and drawings Humans share the Earth with more than 10,000 species of birds and have always been enchanted by them. Birds can be a sign of the changing seasons, a symbol of freedom, or simply a breathtaking vision of beauty. Remarkable Birds approaches these fascinating creatures thematically across eight sections covering all aspects of humans’ relationship with birds. “Songbirds” celebrates the greatest bird virtuosi, such as the nightingale, while “Birds of Prey” includes majestic hunters such as the harpy eagle. “Feathered Travelers” describes astounding journeys made by birds including tiny hummingbirds that migrate huge distances. “The Love Life of Birds” illuminates the most brilliant displays upon which different species rely to find a mate—notably the extravagant plumage and dances of birds of paradise. “Avian Cities” explores the spectacular, large colonies of species such as the flamingo, while “Useful to Us” examines the diverse ways we find birds valuable, such as the turkey or the canary. “Threatened & Extinct” describes some species that have been lost forever, and others on the brink. Birds have also had great mystical significance and “Revered & Adored” considers such species as the sacred ibis, believed by the ancient Egyptians to represent the god Thoth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tall ship Sofia sank off New Zealand’s North Island in February 1982, stranding its crew on disabled life rafts for five days. They struggled to survive as any realistic hope of rescue dwindled. Just a few years earlier, Pamela Sisman Bitterman was a naïve swabbie looking for adventure, signing on with a sailing co-operative taking this sixty-year-old, 123-foot, three-masted gaff-topsail schooner around the globe. The aged Baltic trader had been rescued from a wooden boat graveyard in Sweden and reincarnated as a floating commune in the 1960s. By the time Sofia went down, Bitterman had become an able seaman, promoted first to bos’un and then acting first mate, immersing herself in this life of a tall ship sailor, world traveler, and survivor.
