Book excerpt: There is an increased interest in studying eating disorders and body image in ethnic minority populations. As research on non-White cultural groups increases, we are beginning to identify that eating disorders and body image concerns do exist cross-culturally, but may vary in presentation in each cultural group. However, information on the Asian population, specifically the South Asian population, is limited and inconclusive in this area. Questions about sociocultural influences in this population remain. Numerous methodological problems in the literature, such as wording and language of assessment tools and how South Asians as an ethnic or racial group is defined in the research may also limit our understanding. While the field has used current diagnostic criteria for eating disorders, the few qualitative studies with South Asian women have shown that when these women are asked how they feel about their body, many other variables that are not related and included in the diagnostic criteria are bought up as important to this group. Four sociocultural risk factors that may be relevant to South Asians based on the literature include: (a) body image, (b) acculturation, (c) cultural conflict, and (d) racial teasing. The current project was an exploratory study that utilized focus group interviews to better understand body image and eating concerns among 16 South Asian American women within a tri-state area (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania) in the United States. A self-report questionnaire provided participants a closed-ended and anonymous assessment of their experiences related to body image and eating concerns. A consensual qualitative research method was utilized to determine common themes identified in the focus groups. Five relevant domains were identified: (a) body image, (b) role of food, (c) eating habits, (d) acculturation, and (e) racial teasing. Results are consistent with previous research that shows there are culturally relevant variables related to body image and eating concerns for South Asian women that are not included in current diagnostic criteria. Clinicians and researchers need to be aware of these variables, as they may cause distress for women in this population and need to be reflected in devising appropriate interventions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine what factors contribute to and result from body dissatisfaction using the theoretical framework of the Tripartite Model of Influence, which included family, peer, and media influence. Participants were recruited from SONA and student organizations and participated in an online survey (N =148). A MANCOVA indicated that Asian and White females did not differ in body dissatisfaction and other health outcomes. Thin-ideal internalization mediated the relationships between media influence, peer influence, and body dissatisfaction among Asian American females. Moderation analyses indicated that ethnic identity, Asian American identity, and acculturation did not moderate the relationship between the three tripartite influences and body dissatisfaction. Finally, a series of multiple regressions indicated that body dissatisfaction significantly predicted disordered eating, cosmetic surgery endorsement, and cigarette use among Asian Americans. Findings suggest that Asian American body dissatisfaction may be more related to Western influence than current literature shows.

Book excerpt: The Asian American population has increased almost ten percent in the past decade, marking the second highest growth rate of any racial group in the United States. Because of this increase, researchers need to be more informed about current issues that exist among this population, specifically within Asian American women and body satisfaction. This review seeks to explore the current research that exists on Asian American women and body satisfaction. Potential causes and explanations for why this population may deal with body satisfaction are then explored. These include historical causes, peer pressure, familial pressure, and media influence. The review then looks at methods counselors can use to effectively work with the Asian American women population. Finally, some recommendations for future studies are offered. Through this review, researchers and counselors can be better informed to work with the Asian American population.

Book excerpt: Despite being one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States, Asian Americans are often excluded from clinical trials and public health research. The perpetuation of the "Model Minority" has created bias amongst society, assuming Asian Americans are not vulnerable to economic, social or medical hardships. The Asian American community has consequently internalized this stereotype and endorse this stereotype as a standard towards social mobility. In order to gain social mobility, "thinness" is an additional criteria women must achieve. However, the promotion of unattainable thinness and Eurocentric beauty standards manifests body dissatisfaction, which may push Asian Americans women to engage in disordered eating behavior. Eating disorders and disordered eating has been noted to be comorbid with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation. Asian Americans are three times less likely to seek mental health service compared to Whites, highlighting an ignored mental health crisis within the community. Continuance of untreated mental health concerns may attribute to the statistic that suicide was also revealed to be the leading cause of death in Asian American women in the US. The internalization of multifaceted factors such generational status, biculturalism, and familial values may cause disruption in Asian American women's relationship with food, mental health, body, and identity. This systematic literature review explores the relationship between the spectrum of disordered eating behavior and poor mental health in Asian American women.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Traditionally, body image disturbance and eating disorders have been viewed as a European American female phenomenon but a growing body of evidence suggests that women of color, including African American women, may also be susceptible. The present study investigated the relationships between African and European American women's socioculturally developed attitudes about being attractive and body image, disordered eating, and overall self-esteem. The two attitudes studied were: (1) to be beautiful you must be thin and, (2) to be beautiful you must be White. The second attitude was examined specifically in the African American sample, and was measured using the Implicit Association Test (IAT). Participants, 131 African American and 165 European American female college students completed the IAT, Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire, Body Esteem Scale, Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Evaluation subscale, Body Shape Questionnaire-Revised, Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale, Eating Attitudes Test, and a demographic questionnaire. Results supported the hypothesis that African American women exhibit more positive body images, less disordered eating characteristics, and higher overall self-esteem. As expected, analyses suggested that the race differences on body image, disordered eating and self-esteem were mediated by participants' beliefs that being thin is the ideal. However, the results also revealed variance in body satisfaction and disordered eating within both racial groups. Similar to European Americans, African Americans who espoused the thin ideal were more likely to be less satisfied with their bodies, to engage in disordered eating and to report lower self-esteem. Also, African Americans who showed the clearest implicit preference for European American appearance were reported greater dissatisfaction with their bodies and lower self-esteem. Finally, results only partially supported the hypothesis that greater body preoccupation would be associated with greater disordered eating and lower self-esteem in women with greater body dissatisfaction. The hypothesis was only supported with European American women when predicting self-esteem. Overall, the present study showed that similar sociocultural attitudes about beauty may affect African and European American women's body image and that the levels of body image disturbance and eating concerns in the African American community will continue to grow as these European American thin ideals flourish.
