Book excerpt: North East India is one of the most linguistically diverse regions of the world, with over 100, and perhaps as many as 200, different languages spoken. This book aims to produce a volume reflective of both the linguistic diversity of the region as well as the high quality of current research on North East Indian Linguistics. The articles in this volume cover four of the language families represented in North East India: Tai-Kadai, Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman, and Austroasiatic. Divided into seven sections, the book presents the description and analysis of a wide variety of phonological, syntactic, morphological, socio-linguistic and historical topics in the study of several languages of the region - origin of the Boro-Garo language family, Boro-Garo grammar, serial verbs in a hitherto undescribed variety of Boro, information about Dimasa dialects, phonology of Hajong, a language of Assam and Meghalaya, and analysis of copula constructions in Assam Sadri. The volume also contains an analysis of pronouns in Madhav Kandali's Ramayana, a version of the Ramayana written in colloquial Assamese of the fourteenth century. The final section in this volume discusses serial verb constructions in the Austroasiatic language war, the most detailed discussion of war syntax and semantics to date. Contributions in this volume range from renowned scholars of Tibeto-Burman linguistics to students from the North East making their first impact in the field of Linguistics. The book will be of interest to linguists, anthropologists, social scientists and general readers with an interest in the study, preservation and appreciation of North East Indian cultural and linguistic diversity.

Book excerpt: North East Indian Linguistics Volume 5 presents the latest research on the languages of North East India. This present volume both builds on earlier contributions made by established NEILS participants and introduces new work by scholars making their first mark in regional scholarship. Providing a rich database in the form of two appendices, Alexander Kondakov's paper represents a solid sociolinguistic background against which future grammatical investigation of Koch dialects can be conducted. Mark W. Post's paper continues Kondakov's focus on the social and cultural dimensions of dialectology, in an attempt to resolve the vexing question of Galo's genetic position in the Tani languages. Gwendolyn Hyslop presents the most comprehensive statement yet of the internal structure of this little-studied subgroup spanning Arunachal Pradesh and neighbouring Bhutan. Continuing investigation into nominalization and relational marking in North East Indian languages, Stephen Morey demonstrates that Latin-style grammatical 'case' labels are often inappropriate for the languages of North East India. The volume closes with an analysis of Wihu song poetry by Stephen Morey and Meenaxi Bhattacharjya - the latest of several ground-breaking contributions to ethno-musico-linguistic studies in North East India emerging from the Volkswagenstiftung-funded project led by Stephen Morey.

Book excerpt: This is the eighth volume of North East Indian Linguistics, a series of volumes for publishing current research on the languages of North East India, the first volume of which was published in 2008. The papers in this volume were presented at the 9th conference of the North East Indian Linguistics Society (NEILS), held at Tezpur University in February 2016. The papers for this anniversary volume are arranged into five sections, commencing with two field reports on Mnar, a Khasian language, and Liangmai, a "Naga" language of the Zeme group. The second section of the volume presents detailed work on three languages spoken in Arunachal Pradesh, including on the phonology of Hrusso Aka, colour terms in the Tangsa languages of Changlang district, and a sociolinguistic study of language attitudes in a group of Nocte people who have shifted from their ancestral villages to Bordumsa town. The third section explores the morphosyntax of languages in the family now known both by its older name - Sino-Tibetan - and the more recently coined Trans-Himalayan, with papers investigating the grammars of the Kuki-Chin languages of the 'Naga Belt', and Bodo and Dimasa of the Bodo-Garo group of languages. An exciting feature of the 9th NEILS conference was the number of papers on the topic of person indexation (agreement) on verbs, and the fourth section of this volume presents detailed analyses of this topic in a range of languages, particularly from Northern Naga and Kuki-Chin. The final section of the volume covers the study of Assamese, the major language of the area that is an Indo-European language with a long written history. Papers in this section encompass a wide range of topics, including dictionary making, classifiers and quantifiers - an area of syntax that is special to the Eastern Indic area, and language attitudes and changing linguistic forms in the speech of younger Assamese speakers.

Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive information on enlargement of methodological and empirical choices in a multidisciplinary perspective by breaking down the monopoly of possessing tribal studies in the confinement of conventional disciplinary boundaries. Focusing on anyone of the core themes of history, archaeology or anthropology, the chapters are suggestive of grand theories of tribal interaction over time and space within a frame of composite understanding of human civilization. With distinct cross-disciplinary analytical frames, the chapters maximize reader insights into the emerging trend of perspective shifts in tribal studies, thus mapping multi-dimensional growth of knowledge in the field and providing a road-map of empirical and theoretical understanding of tribal issues in contemporary academics. This book will be useful for researchers and scholars of anthropology, ethnohistory ethnoarchaeology and of allied subjects like sociology, social work, geography who are interested in tribal studies. Finally, the book can also prove useful to policy makers to better understand the historical context of tribal societies for whom new policies are being created and implemented.

Questioning dominant tropes and assumptions around the Northeast, it examines socio-political and historical processes, border issues, the role of the state, displacement and development, debates over natural resources, violence, notions of body and belonging, movements, tensions and relations, and strategies, struggles and narratives that frame discussions on the region. Drawing on current and emerging research in Northeast India studies, this work will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of politics, human geography, sociology and social anthropology, history, cultural studies, media studies and South Asian studies.

It provides a unique guide to prevailing themes, theories, arguments, and history of Northeast India by discussing its life-forms – human and not – languages, landscapes, and lifeways in all its diversity and difference. The companion contains authoritative entries from leading specialists from and on the region and offers clear, concise, and illuminating explanations of key themes and ideas. A hands-on, practical, and comprehensive guide to Northeast India, this companion fills a significant gap in the literature and will be an invaluable teaching, learning, and research resource for scholars and students of Northeast India Studies, South Asian and Southeast Asian societies, culture, politics, humanities, and the social sciences in general.
