Book excerpt: This report covers socio-political developments in 2009 and 2010 related to migration from, or return to, the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), and also to the status of the Palestinian refugees, especially those residing in Lebanon. This report takes its data from the 2010 Migrations Survey in the Palestinian Territory of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), as well as the Socio- Economic Survey of Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon, developed jointly by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the American University of Beirut (AUB). The report conclude that emigration from the oPt will continue to be related with the political context and living conditions of the Palestinian people under the Israeli occupation. In addition, the Palestinian refugee problem will remains a central issue which, if not resolved on a just basis and in line with international law, will hamstring the peace process.

Book excerpt: The socio-economic conditions of Palestinians in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon depend on various political and economic premises as well as on the 'imaginary ethnic environment' in each country. In Lebanon Palestinian refugees seem to be the worst affected. Being constantly denied any rights they are forced to struggle for life. International assistance is insufficient, and although effort is put into securing refugees' basic needs it does not change in a significant way their standard of living. In Syria, Palestinians enjoy almost the same rights, or rather their lack, as Syrian nationals. However, the conditions of the refugee camps do not seem to vary from those in Lebanon or Jordan. In the Hashemite Kingdom most of the Palestinians are granted Jordanian citizenship, but the economic crisis and widespread poverty do not allow the full enjoyment of all the rights. Palestinians seem to be sharing the effects of poverty along with Syrians and Jordanians, and are relegated to the 'third category' citizens in Lebanon. Only few of them, mainly representing middle and upper class, managed to assimilate themselves into the host countries' societies and can afford life on a decent standard comparable to the one they had before being forced to migrate. The misery of Palestinians in the region can be seen as an effect of discriminating legal norms, economic crises, political unrest and a low level of development in the host countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palestinian refugees in Lebanon refer to themselves as 'the forgotten people'. Sixty years on, tens of thousands still live in temporary shelters, in overcrowded unsanitary camps where unemployment and poverty levels are high. Denied basic human rights, they are neglected by the humanitarian community, ignored by the international media. This pioneering book explores the experiences of the oldest and largest single refugee group in the world. Drawing upon comprehensive research in the twelve official refugee camps in Lebanon, the author examines the impact of protracted refugee status on the coping mechanisms developed by refugees. She identifies the lessons to be learned from the refugee experience in Lebanon and and the implications for other refugee groups in different parts of the world. Palestinians in Lebanon provides a long overdue account of one of the most neglected refugee communities in the world.

Book excerpt: Exploring the evolution of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), this book fills a lacuna in literature on the agency. UNRWA and Palestinian Refugees employs recent fieldwork in order to analyse challenges in programmes and service delivery, protection, camp governance, community participation, and camp improvement and reconstruction. The chapters examine the way UNRWA is adapting to a changing social, political and economic context, mostly within urban settings – a paradigmatic shift from understanding the Agency’s role as simply a provider of relief and services to one comprehensively supporting the human development of Palestinian refugees. Examining the refugee debate using new disciplines and research frameworks, this collection aims to emphasise the centrality of the Palestinian refugee issue for Middle East peace-making and to contribute a better understanding of a unique agency. This book will be a useful aid for students and researchers with an interest in Middle East Studies, Politics, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Book excerpt: This thesis moves beyond the narrative of an essentialized, homogeneous Palestinian identity and instead historicizes and teases out the complexities of Palestinian identities. This work explores how refugee camps in Lebanon function as homes and as sites of memory and identity, but also as sites of marginalization and places of control. By engaging with Palestinians living outside the camps, I argue that all of Lebanon serves simultaneously as a home and as a carceral space. This project also explores how civil society and socio-economic status affect perceptions of identities. These factors are discussed within the parameters of the Lebanese socio-political context and against the constraints of power enforced by the Lebanese state. Through using oral histories, I explore how the past affects the present and how individuals assert their identities and make sense of their present and future lives as they process grand narratives that have been passed through generations.

Book excerpt: The Palestinian refugees living in camps and gatherings in Lebanon were selected in order to study the prevalence, correlates and determinants of child labor, schooling and school dropouts among them. Socio-economic profiles of the studied population reveal that they are mostly uneducated, living in subhuman conditions and are not only facing severe problems but are struggling for their existence. The major findings of the study showed that 10.55 percent of the populations aged 5 to 15 years were in labor force. Determinants of child labor were presented--separately for both market and domestic labor. Results demonstrated that having a head of household occupying a blue-collar job and belonging to a household with high dependency ratio had the strongest affect on the prevalence of market child labor. On the other hand, among the eleven-selected predictors off child labor, being a female, living in the south region and having a head of household working in the informal sector had strongly influenced domestic child labor.--It was also concluded in this study that the educational performance for children in the age group 5- 15 was poor. They had high levels of age-grade distortion and dropouts. The findings revealed that 'age of the child ', ' market labor' and having a ' head of household working in the informal sector' strongly affected age-grade distortion. As for the dropouts, it was mostly affected by child being employed followed by having an unemployed head of household. The nexus between child labor and school performance has been clearly demonstrated in the study. Finally bases upon the findings, the thesis gives recommendations for improvement of the conditions of the Palestinian refugee children living in camps and gatherings in Lebanon. These recommendations are addressed separately for different organizations responsible for implementing the welfare programs of the refugees.
