Download or read book Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific 2011 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Asia and the Pacific, gross domestic product growth in 2010 has recovered significantly after the economic downturn of 2008-2009. Employment grew and poverty was reduced but the quality of jobs in Asia remains inadequate. This issue of the Key Indicators highlights the crucial role of higher quality employment in economic growth and poverty reduction in Part I--- Toward Higher Quality Employment in Asia---followed by statistical tables in Parts II and III with short, nontechnical commentaries on economic, financial, social, and environmental developments. Part II comprises the first set of statistical tables and commentaries, which look at the Millennium Development Goals and progress in the region toward achieving key targets. The second set of tables, which are in Part III, is grouped into seven themes providing a broader picture of economic, financial, social, and environmental developments. The aim of the publication is to provide the latest key statistics on development issues concerning Asian and Pacific economies to a wide audience including policy makers, development practitioners, government officials, researchers, students, and the general public. This year, the Asian Development Bank presents a special supplement to the Key Indicators--- theFramework of Inclusive Growth Indicators, which defines inclusive growth and measures countries' progress in ensuring that economic growth benefits all.

Book Synopsis Regional Economic Outlook, April 2013, Asia and Pacific by : International Monetary Fund. Asia and Pacific Dept
Download or read book Regional Economic Outlook, April 2013, Asia and Pacific written by International Monetary Fund. Asia and Pacific Dept and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-04-29 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth in the Asia-Pacific region shows signs of improving as extreme risks emanating from advanced economies have receded and domestic demand remains resilient, supported by relatively easy financial conditions and robust labor markets. A small and gradual pick-up in growth to over 53⁄4 percent is projected in the course of 2013. Risks to the outlook from within the region, such as rising financial imbalances and asset prices in some economies, are coming clearer into focus. Although Asia’s banking and corporate sectors have solid buffers, monetary policymakers should stand ready to respond early and decisively to shifting risks, and macroprudential measures will also have a role to play. In many Asian economies, some fiscal consolidation could also rebuild the space needed to respond to future shocks and preempt potential overheating pressures from capital inflows. In particular, there is a growing need to make tax and spending policies more efficient. To sustain high growth rates and alleviate the “middle-income trap” across Emerging Asia, the policy agenda will vary by jurisdiction but will also often include strengthening infrastructure investment and reforming goods and labor markets.

Download or read book Social Cohesion in Asia written by Aurel Croissant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the historical origins, contemporary dynamics and future challenges of social cohesion in South, Southeast and East Asia—one of the most dynamic and at the same time heterogeneous regions in the world, in terms of economic, political and human development. The comparative case studies in this volume develop a better understanding of social cohesion in Asia by exploring how social cohesion is understood, analyzed and sometimes politically instrumentalised. Examining different dimensions and qualities of social cohesion and how they are linked together, it also discusses the challenges of social cohesion in individual societies. The case studies include examples from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, South Korea and Mainland China and building on the conceptual work and empirical findings of the Asian Social Cohesion Radar, this book provides detailed cross-country analyses over the past 15 years. Combining rigorous conceptual and theoretical reasoning with a systematic empirical analysis of trends across the region, Social Cohesion in Asia will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian politics, international relations, political sociology, comparative politics and Democratization Studies.
Download or read book How was Life? written by J. L. van Zanden and published by OCDE. This book was released on 2014 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How was life in 1820 and how has it improved since then? What are the long-term trends in global well-being? Trends in real GDP per capita may not fully reflect changes in other dimensions of well-being, such as life expectancy, educational attainment, personal security, and gender inequality. The product of collaboration between the OECD, the OECD Development Centre, and the CLIOINFRA project, this report represents the work of a group of economic historians to systematically chart long-term changes in the dimensions of global wellbeing and inequality, making use of the best sources and expertise currently available and the most recent research carried out within the discipline. The historical evidence reviewed in the report is organized on ten different dimensions of well-being that mirror those used by the OECD in its report, How's Life? (www.oecd.org/howslife): per capita GDP, real wages, educational attainment, life expectancy, height, personal security, political institutions, environmental quality, income inequality, and gender inequality

Book Synopsis Indoor Air Pollution by : R M Harrison
Download or read book Indoor Air Pollution written by R M Harrison and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time–activity diaries kept by members of the general public indicate that on average people spend around 90% of their time indoors, this is associated with considerable exposure to air pollutants as not only is there infiltration of pollutants from outdoors, there are also emissions indoors that can lead to elevated pollutant concentrations. Despite this, and the fact that the WHO produces air quality guidelines for indoor air, the only statutory requirements for monitoring of airborne pollutant concentrations relate to the outdoor environment. Given its importance as a source of air pollution exposure, increasing attention is being given to pollution of the indoor environment. This volume considers both chemical and biological pollutants in the indoor atmosphere from their sources to chemical and physical transformations, human exposure and potential effects on human health. It is a valuable reference for those working in in environmental policy, civil and environmental engineering as well as for atmospheric chemists.
