This book was released on 2008 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Established unofficially in 1989, the International Conference of Editors of Diplomatic Documents brought together in Paris in October 2005, on the occasion of its 8th meeting, more than thirty delegations. The conference concentrated on the methodology of editing and publishing and chose to focus on the historical theme of the birth and development of the United Nations Organization. Reports and papers presented by the participants are gathered in the present proceedings, the publishing of which was entrusted by the Archives of the ministère des Affaires étrangères to Peter Lang Publishing Group, which is currently responsible for publishing the Documents diplomatiques français. The reader will find in this publication the trade secrets of the French series and of the earliest analogous series of diplomatic documents, as well as discover other more recent collections or even some in the process of being created.

Book Synopsis The United Nations by : Maruice Bertrand
Download or read book The United Nations written by Maruice Bertrand and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations is no more than a very modest element in the whole complex body of institutions which form the structure of international relations. It may thus appear surprising that this organization should have been, and can still be, the object of such enthusiasm and such hate - of such admiration and such derision - and that the most contradictory opinions should daily be expressed on what it does, on its operation and its effectiveness, and on the steps which should be taken for its reform. It is impossible to understand this paradoxical situation without analyzing the interrelationships between ideas about peace - which were false since the beginning of the League of Nations, the manner in which these ideas have come to be embodied in a structure which prevented the institution from becoming a useful instrument of negotiation, and the accelerating rate of political change in the world, all of which make some suggest that the UN is becoming more and more irrelevant. Today, the UN touches on everything, but does not in any way give a response to the dream of peace which it was supposed to realize. Through a thorough analysis of the role of the League of Nations and of the UN in the field of security, an evaluation of their rare successes and their numerous failures, and a complete review of the activities of the organisation in the economic and social fields, Maurice Bertrand shows that there is a need today for a radical reform of the whole complex of global organizations. This work is a translated and updated edition of L'ONU, published by Editions la Découverte.
Book Synopsis Managing Money and Discord in the UN by : Ronny Patz
Download or read book Managing Money and Discord in the UN written by Ronny Patz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do international organizations in the United Nations system put together their budgets? What is the role of complex principals - most notably member states - and the complex agents in the bureaucracies of international organizations in budgeting processes? And what does a focus on budgeting tell us about the changing nature of the system of international organizations? This book provides answers to these questions through a detailed examination of budgeting in the UN system. The analysis draws on both quantitative and qualitative observations for a total of 22 UN system organizations and detailed case studies for the United Nations, ILO, UNESCO, and WHO. The findings demonstrate the importance of three key organizational outcomes-- proceduralization, routinization, and budgetary segmentation - as international organizations grapple with managing discord over priorities as a result of complex principal-- agent constellations. Contrary to a common view of international bureaucracies as pathological organizations, core budget routines are mostly successfully maintained. However, principal constellations become more complex, notably through the rise of voluntary contributions and non-state donors; budgetary segmentation advances, in some cases even leading to the setting up of new international organizations; and budgeting and resource mobilization become ever more intertwined. As a consequence, the capacity of international bureaucracies to fulfil their budgeting responsibilities is stretched to the limits and beyond. Transformations in Governance is a major academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, and environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states to supranational institutions, subnational governments, and public-private networks. It brings together work that advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars. The series is edited by Liesbet Hooghe and Gary Marks of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Walter Mattli of the University of Oxford.

Book Synopsis Evolving Constitutions of International Organizations by : Sato
Download or read book Evolving Constitutions of International Organizations written by Sato and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the law-creating process relating to the interpretation of constituent instruments of international organizations. This topic is one of the key issues concerning the structures and activities of international organizations. It differs from other books in the field by suggesting that, under the influences of the inherent dynamism of international organizations, the interpretative framework of their constituent instruments is not the same as that of ordinary treaties. It also concludes that the interpretation of the constituent instruments of international organizations deviates from the interpretative framework regulated by the law of treaties as codified by the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. The book will be of prime interest to academics in the fields of international law and international organization and treaty law.
