Book excerpt: A novel about Mumbai's elite, as seen through the wide eyes of a young woman, from one of India's most renowned bestselling authors. Shedding her middle-class past, Karuna has found her place in high society. But with her upward climb came many lows. Now battered, but not beaten, she seeks to heal her soul by sharing her story, offering a rare glimpse at an all-consuming world of power and greed. Breaking through the fake veneers of Mumbai's most powerful, Karuna's story exposes a world of pretension and deceit. In doing so she rediscovers the woman who was swept away by it all. Behind her glamorous persona emerges a warrior--a grown woman who had to lose everything to have it all.

She looks back upon her life and the friends and enemies who surround her—neurotic, man-hungry Anjali; gorgeous, vivacious Ritu; high-profile editor Varun, with a penchant for young boys; Krish, the pretentious adman, whose wife actively helps him in his extramarital affairs. Scandalous, astute and utterly riveting, Shobhaa Dé’s first novel, Socialite Evenings, laid bare the world of high-society India and changed the face of the Indian novel forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection addresses broad questions of ethics and aesthetics in the framework of vernacular cosmopolitanism. With a common anthropological focus, the essays map literary and artistic practices involving cross-cultural transactions shaped by social forces, institutions, and the multiple mediations of the imagination. Some essays are based on community-based fieldwork, while all encompass an affective immersion in the places we inhabit, and the claims these make on the body’s intelligibility. The authors consider the role of artists, writers, and literary scholars as cultural actors in a variety of settings, grassroots, regional, trans-regional, and global. Topics include: the role of social and cultural activism; the problematic dimensions of national belonging; the plurality of knowledge-systems and inter-language environ-mental learning in South Africa; the vernacular imagination in Papua New Guinea Anglophone fiction; pulp fiction and chick lit in India; transformative artistic motifs of Australia’s nomadic Tiwi community; life writing as a reconfiguring of postcolonial or cosmopolitan paradigms; southern African supernatural belief-systems and the malign magic of the global economy; Canadian First Nations literature read against the struggle for self-determination by India’s castes and scheduled tribes; feral animals in relation to the indigenous exotic; and the imbrication of the vernacular, national, colonial, and cosmopolitan in perceptions of homecoming in the eastern Mediterranean. The collection as a whole thus provides manifestations of poesis in relation to theory and praxis and articulates perspectives that expand, challenge, strengthen, and renew the potential for growth in contemporary world literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature is one of the fine arts that employ "language" as medium of expression. It is essentially an expression of human feelings, emotions, sufferings and joys. Good literature is never outdated and is unbounded by space and time. It has permanence. It is also universal, in the sense that it appeals to readers of any nationality or linguistic ability. Language or culture may be different but human sentiments remain essentially similar in all literatures of the world.
