Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialists and Socialism F you've nothing else to do and are at all interested in the subject, suppose you come along with me, and have a look at the Howling Dervishes. It takes all sorts of folks to make a world, you know, and the Howling Dervish is a time-honored institution. He has enormous faith in himself, and no amount of the opposition literature could exterminate him. He's a fix ture, the Howling D. Is, and we must reconcile ourselves to him, as we do to other inevitable and unescapable actualities. The most amusing thing about the modern H. Dervish is, that he considers himself something new under the sun. He isn't. Plato dreamed of him; ancient Sparta knew him well: each savage tribe had to shake him off and even the American colonies experimented with him. In their young and silly days. But the Socialists of our time bitterly deny the possession of a historic lineage, and wildly claim originality as they bowl and whirl. If you have no decided preference as to what part of the Socialist capon shall be put on your plate, I'll begin with young Robert Hunter. Young Robert is the Socialist leader who worked a get-rich-quick scheme by marrying a millionaire's daughter, - after which he published a book on Poverty, and began to wear pink socks. The reader need not expect anything like a full treatment of any of the subjects of the different sections. My object was to repeat and emphasise some main idea under the various headings, so that the ordinary reader might get a grasp of some principle which would serve to direct him in forming a correct opinion on the manifold side-issues arising out of the main subject. I shall be satisfied to know that I have succeeded in this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appeal Socialist Classics The pamphlets in this series are composed, in the main, of selections from the published work of Socialist writers, mostly of the present day. In some of them, particularly "Socialist Documents" and "Socialism and Government," the writings used are mainly of collective, rather than individual authorship; while the Historical Sketch is the composition of the editor. To the selections given, the editor has added explanatory and connecting paragraphs, welding the fragments into a coherent whole. The aim is the massing together in concise and systematic form, of what has been most clearly and pertinently said, either by individual Socialist writers or by committees speaking for the party as a whole, on all of the main phases of Socialism. In their finished form they might, with some appropriateness, be termed mosaics: each pamphlet is an arrangement of parts from many sources according to a unitary design. Most of the separate pieces are, however, in the best sense classics: they are expressions of Socialist thought which, by general approval, have won authoritative rank. A classic, according to James Russell Lowell, is of itself "something neither ancient nor modern"; even the most recent writing may be considered classic if, for the mood it depicts or the thought it frames, it unites matter and style into an expression of approved merit. For the choice of selections the editor is alone responsible. Doubtless for some of the subjects treated another editor would have chosen differently. The difficulty indeed has been in deciding what to omit; for the mass of Socialist literature contains much that may be rightly called classic which obviously could not have been included in these brief volumes. The pamphlets in the series are as follows: 1. The Elements of Socialism. 2. The Science of Socialism, 3. Socialism: A Historical Sketch. 4. Socialist Documents. 5. Socialism and Government. 6. Questions and Answers. 7. Socialism and Organized Labor. 8. Socialism and the Farmer. 9. Socialism and Social Reform. 10. The Tactics of Socialism. 11. The Socialist Appeal. 12. Socialism in Verse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism This little book, written with the purpose of presenting in a popular and readable form, ideas which have been treated more seriously elsewhere, is almost wholly descriptive of a form of social and industrial organization which the writer conceives to be in harmony with the principle of social justice elsewhere enunciated. The problem of practical socialism is as old as civilization. In all centuries men have dreamed of a golden age in which all things would be made perfect, and have struggled to devise laws and systems under which men might cooperate in harmony, and all have sufficient for their needs. Yet, at the present day, the problem appears to be as little understood as in the beginning. From the time of Moses and Plato to that of the more modern Utopian imaginings which hold our interest for a passing day and are soon forgotten, philosophers have left but futile records of their speculations. Hence men have come to think of the problem as one which does not come within the sphere of exact science. He who claims to have reached a solution of the problem must necessarily face an incredulous audience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have called each of these gentlemen a socialist, because each would call himself a socialist. I believe in freedom of thought, and it seems to me absurd to forbid anyone to think and call himself a socialist if he wishes to do so. It is, however, notorious that Lenin and Trotsky would deny that many of the others mentioned were socialists, while some Of the others would deny' that Lenin and Trotsky's system of society had any right to call itself socialism. It is essential that a writer on socialism should face this difficulty and make his position clear at the outset. I am aware that, although I call myself and think myself a socialist, many other socialists will deny that what I call socialism is really socialism. I cannot return the compliment. I believe that most people who honestly consider themselves to be socialists are such. Lenin and Mr. Sidney Webb are both socialists, because they both wish the foundations of social organization to be Of a certain kind. They may differ fundamentally on other, and possibly equally impor tant, questions, on, e.g., the means by which the social revolution may be attained, but they do agree on this vital point they wish to substitute a socialistic for a capitalistic society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism in Thought and Action In the year 1900, a student would have searched American literature in vain for any adequate expression of socialism written by a sympathetic student of the subject in this country, and published by a non-socialist publishing house. From that year until the outbreak of the European war, however, volume after volume issued from the press and, by the summer of 1914, practically every phase of socialist theory and tactics had been carefully treated. Since the first of August, 1914, revolutionary changes have taken place in the socialist movement and philosophy. In many countries socialist theory, for the first time, under the most difficult circumstances, has been brought face to face with reality, and the socialist movement has evolved from a small, minority group to a powerful factor in the life of the people. The war has given a great impetus to the guild socialist idea, with its emphasis on producers' control of industry and its insistence on the development of personality as the ultimate goal of society. It has afforded world-wide publicity to the soviet form of the state, with its demand for occupational representation and its temporary "dictatorship of the proletariat." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Socialism Works Two things are necessary to the success of any labor movement: the movement has got to know both where it is going and how to get there. Each is equally important. If a labor movement does not know the goal of all its efforts it can never succeed. The movement must know the final objective toward the attain ment of which the winning of every election, the calling of every strike, the organization of this or that section of the workers, the promotion of this or that piece of legislation, the building of this or that working-class political party, are all directed. There have been labor movements which did not know where they were going. The British Labor Movement, for example, has never paid much attention to the question of what it was really out to attain. For a long time such an indifference to the ultimate goal may not seem to matter very much. The work of the movement may go on with great apparent efficiency. Trade-unions may be well organized; strikes strongly fought; considerable elec tion triumphs registered. But in the long run, experience conclusively shows, a labor movement which does not know where it is going is bound to fail. In the end such a move ment is bound to lose direction, to take what appears to be the easy path, to fail to see the necessity of carrying through certain measures even in face of the strongest opposition and the greatest difficulties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor Questions and Socialism The workers and those who claim to be their special advocates seem to advocate, and seem now disposed to copy, the worst forms of bad legislation of past generations as to the regulation of the relations between employer and employed. Then, laws were passed to control the laborer, now, it is proposed to procure enactments to control the employer. As Professor Thorold Rogers points out, the Act of Elizabeth and the regulations of Quarter Sessions which prescribed twelve hours work a day all the year round only provoked evasion and resistance on the part of employer and employed. The natural tendency to-day is in the direction of shorter hours of labor. Where laws for limiting hours of labor have recently been resorted to, they have achieved very little. This is illustrated by recent Transatlantic experience, and is shown by the introductory remarks on the hours of labor in Vol. XX. Of the tenth Census of the United States of America. On the contrary, organisation has already had considerable effect in diminishing the number of hours worked per day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism Means Slavery for the Working Man Being myself a mechanic and ever deeply interested, as I am to-day, in the uplifting of the toiling masses, I entered upon the study of Socialism with the avowed intention of joining the movement if I found its platform, plans, and purposes to be honest, practicable, and progressive. I there fore hope that in reading this statement of my final conclu sions, every Socialist will in fairness extend to me the right he claims for himself - the simple right to express my own thoughts, the right to paint the picture as I myself see it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Aspects of Socialism Socialism can be approached equally well from two opposite directions. It may be treated either as a social movement that aims to build up a new civilization, or as a new civilization that is gradually being embodied in a social movement. In my "Socialism As It Is" I followed the first method and discussed the economic and political features of Socialism exclusively; in the present volume I shall proceed in the reverse direction and deal exclusively with its larger aspects, its intellectual and spiritual side. As the two books were conceived and written together, they are parts of a single whole; but they are built on entirely independent foundations. In dealing with the economic and political movement I followed the inductive method; taking the activities of the movement itself as my point of departure, I concluded with its generalizations. In discussing the cultural movement I have followed the deductive method. Taking as my point of departure the philosophy of modern science, which I show to be wholly Socialistic in its bearings, and wholly dependent upon Socialism for its practical applications, I have first shown what results are reached by approaching each of the subjects I have discussed from this new standpoint, and I have then pointed out how the Socialist movement is, as a matter of fact, moving along the same line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Mass Work Why do we submit the mass work problem for discussion? It is because through the masses alone that we can change our present, make our future and transform objectives and aspirations into a living reality. Our leader and teacher has summed up this question in his first words to the Executive Bureaux members: It is not in my ability as an individual to build anything either in society, government or in the Arab Socialist Union. This is why mass work is the first question which confronts the revolutionaries while building up the new society. It is possible to define mass work as the positivity in confronting the various situations evoked by the daily life of the people and the movement of their progression towards the appointed goal. This positivity, be it a spontaneous faculty or an acquired experience, undoubtedly bears traces of historical features and social, economic and political developments of the people. The larger historical books on the subject st0p short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on.
